Europe Summer Internationals

June 10th, 2012
From Various

It seems that the Game in Europe is continuing to power on. Though not everything is perfect at least a regular set of international competitions is now established and teams know that they have set internationals that they can look forward to in the year. Malta and Denmark had the first of their two matches for the year whilst the European Shield is now 1/4 of the way through their 2 year competition with Italy and Serbia renewing their rivalry which will be interesting to see since t will pit a full domestic Italy team with no imports against the domestic players of Serbia. Canada name their squad for this years internationals while also the BARLA team takes on Jamaica in Kingston.

A Topsy Turvey Week

June 28th, 2012
By Various

This week has seen some good and bad news in the world of Rugby League. As it is this is the way it goes sometimes. News about Larrat stepping down in France, the Bradford Bulls going into administration and the State of Origin Selection farce rears its head once more, these are never good, but there also have been some great positives. Lebanon are preparing for their tour of Canada, BARLA had a successful tour in Jamaica and the Jamaican domestic Season has kicked off.

Bulls, Eagles and Pioneers

July 12th, 2012
By Daniel Andruczyk

Its been an interesting time the last couple weeks. The Bradford Bulls saga goes on with now some time being extended to find investors that can save the club. BARLA toured the Czech Republic and The GB Pioneers have completed a highly successful tour of Lodz in Poland. Also the Manly Sea Eagles are looking at plans, that have been wrongly reported as being a first in Rugby League, to get their field upgraded.

Mead Stirs up a Storm

July 13th, 2012
By Daniel Andruczyk

Once again interesting times for Rugby league this week. Hot on the heals of this years Origin selection controversies, we seem to have a new one already for for next year. But in some ways I think this one could be more good news than bad. Also a small comment on the reaction to the Moroccan Rugby League affair.

Why Bringing Back Tours is a Bad Idea

July 29th, 2012
By Daniel Andruczyk

Recently there has been a call from some sectors to bring back the old tours from yesteryear. In particular is the Ashes and the idea that by having Great Britain back it will compete better with Australia and New Zealand again. Funny enough this is coming from section of the Australian fans and sporting public, a public that tends to be very un-educated on how much the sport of Rugby League has grown over the years around the world. Let me say this: Tours should not be brought back because they are probably the single most reason why the sport of Rugby League for so long has been stagnant. Its been when the tours were dismantled that international rugby league started to flourish. Any attempt to bring them back will only kill the sport once again and have it as a 3/4 horse race once again. I hope that by the end of this piece I can convince you why I feel this way.

Report from the USA

August 17th, 2012
By Daniel Andruczyk

So its getting to some interesting times here in the USA. The finals are upon us. Last weekend saw both the AMNRL and USARL semi-finals happen and we now have the Grand Finalists set for both competitions. The three Philadelphia teams in both comps failed to reach the grand finals and we see two of the usual suspects in the Grand finals, namely the New York Knights and Jacksonville Axemnen. These are two of the power house teams in the USA in general and are both heavy favourites to win their respective comps.

A Great Time of Year

August 22nd, 2012
By Daniel Andruczyk

A few comments today on some things that have been going on the last week and that I want to comment on. Yes the new NRL broadcast deal has been announced, but i will not talk about that today. Recently the Canberra Stadium has been announced as a Test venue for next years mid-season game. An interesting response has been had by the fans on this issue. This week also sees the Challenge Cup Final and I will be privileged to be there once again (last time I was there was 2008). Also a bit of news out of Serbia.

Heartbreak Hodgson does it for Wolves

August 28th, 2012
By Daniel Andruczyk

Over the years as a fan you develop a relationship between teams and players. One that I have a love hate one with is Brett Hodgson. So he is a great guy, I have met him a couple times over the years and he always seems to have all the time in the world to chat with you, win lose or draw. Saturday evening was no exception to this. But, goodness me, he is always on the team opposed to the one I am supporting and (except the blues) and they always beat them when he’s’ in there. I have dubbed him Mr Heartbreak for me. This time he was playing for the Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup Final and won the Lance Todd Trophy for man of the match in their 35 – 18 defeat of Leeds. Breaking my heart again and I told him as much!
