I’m volunteering in an official role for the Sydney games.

If I see anyone from management, or who was in charge of ticket sales ima going to have to be held back.

Everyone knew the scheduling was rubbish from the moment it was announced, but even so, the crowds are disappointing.

I don't really understand the 'government bidding' argument. How much did Cairns, Townsville and Canberra pay to get 3 games for piss poor crowds? I know we are trying to grow the sport but surely the fans deserve to be rewarded as well. Newcastle, Gosford, Wollongong and the Pacific fans in western Sydney have been great supporters of the international game in the past.

And do Melbourne have a contract for Australia v England games or something? They've had every one since 2008 and apart from the game in 2008 never really impressed. I don't understand how in our one warm-up for the WC in the 2014 FN we see a double-header draw nearly 48k in Brisbane and Aus v Eng draw the usual 20k in Melbourne. So what do we do? Put it in Melbourne again and ramp up the prices.

It's the same as the NRL. Shit scheduling, shit prices and apathetic fans.

It really shouldn't have been that hard to beat the 2013 edition. Round 1 in 13 had 3 7k crowds. This time we had three teams playing at home, yet New Zealand could only manage 3k more in Auckland than they did in Warrington against the same opposition, and that was one of the good crowds.

All Group A and B games this weekend should be 15k at least. Hopefully Townsville can double their shit crowd from last week.

Thankfully it didn't rain - could you imagine Cairns yesterday in the wet - terrible conditions for spectators to sit on the grass

Bought my tickets to Aus vs France and had to buy them in the support sections as it said cat a and b had single seats only. I get back to the site today and see plenty of cat b and c tickets. What the f*** is going on?

^^Ticketek fake scarcity to incite a purchase. Same as low-cost airline ticket websites.

Jerseys spotted in France v Lebanon crowd:

- Carcassonne
- RL Deutschland
- Toronto Wolfpack

I was giving them the benefit of the doubt until we see some results but it's become clear that the ticketing pricing and release strategy is f**king awful.
A mate keeps insisting to me that Poms v Lebanon is close to a sellout (after he looks at Ticketek website) and I have to keep telling him it isn't!!!

Surprised he's not looking at Viagogo like the other planks

But yeah ticketek is f**ked. At some point on Friday afternoon there were a mere few hundred tickets for sale. Never mind the 8000 spare seats

I wonder with Lebanon's victory whether there will be a "rush" for tickets?

Most of the RL fans I know down here (paid up members of multiple different clubs most of whom attend games regularly) didn't even realise that there were matches being held here,
that is my experience in Canberra too.

The marketing hasn’t broken through the day to day noise.

Look I'm not expecting 40,000 people to pack out stadiums to watch neutrals and minnows. My hope was merely 'better than the last 2', which is a pretty low f**king bar. No excuse for crowds of sub-10k in this thing.

People just want to see a competitive contest and that was never a remote chance in Townsville this week thus the crowd that turned up.

Any tournament like this hosted in a single nation including soccer world cup, rugby world cup and cricket world cup etc. relies on a number of factors to draw a crowd to a group fixture not featuring a host. They are:

1. Travelling supporters of the teams playing
2. Expats of the teams playing
3. Locals who identify culturally with one of the teams playing
4. The "I can say I was there" mantra
5. Quality and competitiveness of the contest

This isn't the Olympics so number 4 is unlikely aside from the final. Clearly 5 is going to be an issue for many games in the tournament and I doubt there are thousands upon thousands of people travelling from the pacific islands, Europe (besides England) and North America.

That leaves 2 and 3 for games like the one in Townsville, I am no Townsville demographics expert but I can't imagine there are too many Americans and Fijians there.

In light of poor crowds I would of played:

Lebanon v France belmore oval Sydney

Italy v Ireland - Leichardt oval Sydney - stones throw from Norton st with big Italian influence

Tonga v Scotland - Penrith stadium - tonga western Sydney support

Fiji v Usa - Campbelltown stadium - hayne factor + Fiji western Sydney support

too easy

Tell them to drop the price of tickets not increase leading into a game.. On a positive note the shirts the volunteers were wearing looked a good quality and colour you could wear again. Not like the shit Sydney 2000 games shirts their volunteers wore. They were putrid.
