Eels' Robson out to prove doubters wrong
BEN HORNE

Parramatta NRL halfback Jeff Robson is aware critics are still doubting his ability, and is determined to prove them wrong.
Despite playing a leading hand in the Eels making it through to last year's grand final, plenty still see Robson as the weak link in an otherwise star-studded backline.
The 27-year-old was the unsung hero in Parramatta's dream run last season, with his steadiness allowing Jarryd Hayne to flourish.
Robson managed just six games in the first five years of his NRL career, but now he's got his start, the late bloomer is ready to cement his position and dismiss his detractors.
"I'm sure there are still probably people who doubt me but obviously I want to just go out there and prove them wrong," Robson told AAP.
"I don't really listen to those sorts of things. I just go out and enjoy my footy and being around the boys.
"After last season, hopefully we can go one better. I want to have another good season and remain injury free."
Jarryd Hayne and Timana Tahu help form one of the most devastating backlines in the game, yet the man in the hot-seat at the Eels is the little-known Robson.
Traditionally, halfback is the make-or-break position in any team, but Robson believes his job is simple.
The Leeton junior is unfazed by the task of ensuring Parramatta's weapons see quality ball.
"No, if anything it takes more pressure off myself, just to give them early ball, and they can do their own thing," said Robson.
"I'll be playing a similar style of play with my position. I've just got to lead the team around the park and be dominant, and hopefully we can go from there and win a lot of games."
Another of the Eels' backline stars, Eric Grothe said Robson doesn't appreciate the criticism, but knows exactly what to do about it.
"He doesn't like the tag too much, the old working class Robbo, but he's got it so you've got to run with it. As footy players do, you've got to have thick skin," Grothe said.
"You know what he's like, he's just head down bum up and being the halfback you cop it from the coaches more than anyone else.
"I think he handled himself fantastically last year and to come from where he was not playing much first grade to leading a grand final team out is just a massive pat on the back for him.
"He knows what it takes now and he'll be a lot wiser for the experience."

What? No mention of the Bulldogs wanting him?

Suity

Of course not, it wouldn't put Parra under salary cap pressure.

BULLDOGS OFFER DOUBLE ROBSON'S CONTRACT !!

But tbh, besides his defense, what he does do extremely well is to get the ball to Hayne and co. and he does it quick smart.

Especially if there is broken play, he will try and find these guys and throw it to them.

Canterbury want Karlos Filiga back..They will make him a HUGE offer. They see him as the 'poor man's' SBW...

I would love to see him develop a good kicking game, at this stage it's the only thing he is missing, with players like Hayne and Mateo he doesn't need that creativity to set every play all he has to do is do what he has been doing and getting that ball to them.

And that's where my problem with him at halfback is.

We need someone with a good short kicking game to build pressure in the opposition 20.

Not Bomb or throw it to Hayne and let him do something out of chance.

We need PRESSURE BUILDING.

It tires the opposition defense to consistently defend their tryline on top of the adhoc play we have which also tires them.

Then when they snap, then open the flood gates.

The only one in Parra that I see that have this ability is Mateo and as others have alightened, KK.

I thin Matt Keating is the dark horse there. He has a very good short kicking game. In fact, his kicking game is pretty good all around - remember that cracking 40/20 he kicked two years ago? Blimey!

Yeah, but like in another post, they said that Burt can kick but then you lose a winger or a hooker.

One way I guess is that Robson goes to 9 and Matt Keating takes the kick but then it undermines him as a halfback so to speak.

If Burt did the kicks, does Robbo run out to the wing?

To me it seems messy.

I still think Mateo is the best bet.

He can be on one side, Hayne the other. Robbo can be first distributor, Mortz supports whatever Hayne or Mateo does.

Just because a player is kicking or not, the whole side doesn't have to shuffle from out to the wing in and vice versa...... Burty kicks often enough as does Hayne but they position themselves early enough in attack that it doesn't matter.

Mortimer has a decent short kicking game as does Matt Keating. Hayne, Keating and Robson all play centre field anyway.

in 35 years of supporting this club I haven't seen an over achievement like Robo's and Mortimers 2009 season..Robo was paid 50K and had no right to play in a grand final and steer us around.

gis overall effort was phenominal.
