NQ will towel us

Jimmy's going to be in a world of hurt next week...it'll be the longest 80 minutes of his life..it would be merciful ..and maybe wise (with a long season ahead) to put Luai in there.
Edit....thought you were playing NQ

The first thing that has to be made clear is the Eels deserved there win so take nothing away from them.

We gifted them field position and possession and ultimately at the end of the day it cost us.

I thought for the most part we defended really well.

I don’t enjoy bringing the officiating into the equation but I am at a loss to explain how our only two penalties in 80 minutes are for high tackles and yet we concede 10 for the broad range of infringements. Ashley Klein has a history against us and it continued again today.

In a game where there were not a lot of positives I thought our obvious best player was James Tamou who I thought was outstanding.

Disappointing result but not the time to lay into Ivan, Nathan or the roster in general.

The last thing I will say is, the sin binning of Michael Jennings was a joke. It’s either a penalty and on report or a send off. It’s one or the other and the sin binning was a farce.

Eels were apparently never offside once and didnt flop into a tackle at all. Yet somehow watching the game I mistakenly saw them do both without being penalised.

Some consistency would be nice.

There is clearly an issue with the Panthers and Ashley Klein. The statistics don’t lie.

James Maloney got pinged for coming out of the line early on one occasion and there were three or four similar instances of where the Eels did the same thing but nothing eventuated.

I really don’t think we were ill disciplined this afternoon. It was a situation where the team in possession got all the penalties and that was the Eels. I’m not sure we deserved to get hammered 10-2 and not get one penalty all game for an offside or ruck infringement. The Eels were obviously were disciplined.

Any thoughts on putting Edwards on wing and DWZ back to FB?

Personally I would leave the back three as they are. You can’t change things after one game. There are probably bigger issues that need to be resolved on the evidence of today.

I made a comment to my friend sitting next to me that the Eels were prepared to offload and had half a dozen in the first 20 minutes or so all were effective and got them second phase play. I know we had no ball but one out hit up’s simply ain’t gonna get the job done or get you on the front foot coming out of your own end. Without Kikau we lack X factor I think that is a given. For me this side needs Jed Cartwright. He’s big, strong, fast and has an off load. The back rowers on show today all very similar. Jed offers the X factor and we need him in this 17.

Did my eyes deceive me or did Gutherson (I think) lash out and kick Luia?
Still, Parramatta were perfectly disciplined in the refs eyes as they only penalised them once, with the video ref giving the other one. Not bad for 80 minutes!
Penrith played terrible in the first half, but were then shut out off the game by Ashley Klein! So much for the improved refereeing!

He should have been put on the wing to start with. He’s played very little football and DWZ came off an extended rep season playing really well.

I hate the fact we develop talent and feel the need to squeeze everyone in.

On form, DWZ gets the nod.

Ashley Klein and the refs from the Canberra v titans game were on a different page to those in the first games of the season.

Other games flowed, those two games were one sided

The ruck was slowed right down for them but we get called off straight away.

No one like hook so he was blamed. One day someone will actually admit the players just aren't good enough

So whose fault would that be? The players don't RECRUIT or SELECT themselves, or devise the structures, Strategy and organise training. That is up to the football manager and coaching stuff. Isn't it funny that since the Gus era started that several of the Leary/Elliot boom juniors that we thought would win a premiership won them with other clubs - those being Jennings, Graham, Coote (with Lewis who should have been a Panther for life also winning another).

Hard to argue when the same happens every week. We ave 10 penalties a game last year so same old

I have said all off season we lack the players to live upto the hype.

Every year we let a few top 17 go. Replace from within and wonder why we struggle... Atleast without hook to blame someone might actually look at the real problems.

Then and maybe then can we take that next step

Our back three were all poor. Mansour offers nothing should have been let go last year.
As I said last year Edwards in not in the top 10 fullbacks in the NRL and I was howled down.
Have a look at our signings for this year they are all of NSW Cup standard at best.
Front rower we lack a forward leader and don't have a dummy half in the club.
Both halves were both very poor today.

Sadly mostly right. Edwards is a competent FB but that is about it. He could 'level up' to good (4th to 7th) but that is probably his ceiling.

The Mansour call is correct. He no longer chews through the metres....he is slow as f**k for a winger, gets caught out of position, out competed in the air and has 1-2 errors a game more than he should.

Signings have been really shit house whilst our upgrades are poor value, we are paying blokes as if they are either 8 or 9 out of 10 players, but really their average would be a good point or point and a half below. Some of the very same mistakes of the Leary/Elliot era on overpaying our boom juniors on potential look to have been committed.

Tamou is our only quality prop...RCG is a prime example of my above paragraph. Moses goes okay but where is the rest of the quality? Gone with Sam's ACL. I have NFI how Sele and Fuimaono make our 17 but here we are....

Penrith's biggest problem however is that it is simply a low IQ team. We routinely give away stupid penalties, or make silly errors at the worst possible time. Even Jimmy Maloney who is actually a seemingly smart bloke behaves like an idiot out there all too often.

Unfortunately this is the way we have been run since Gus has come here....the opposite of Melbourne.

Melbourne - stable and brilliant spines with a coach who 'moneyballs' the lesser positions and coaches them into being better players than they would otherwise be. Dumb and ill disciplined players are weeded out even if talented. Note how most of their players aren't brilliant at anything but also have no glaring holes.

Penrith - completely unstable (littered with fill ins, hacks and past their best hacks) spine. Seriously look at our spine progression since 2012...it has to be one of the most unstable in the NRL.

Our 'stars' are overpaid on potential and many of our stars have 1 or 2 great positive attributes - but also some big set back. e.g. Kikau is an attacking weapon but defensive disaster, Mansour very limited.

But the biggest difference is that the Storm are a professional, well drilled team where stupidity is kept to a minimum. We have stupidity all round the park and it shows whether Cleary or Griffin is coaching.

Its only rd 1 no need to panic guys yes it was a very ordinary effort today losing to parra twice in 2 weeks and not scoring a point in 120 mins against them is a worrying sign. But we will bounce back against the knights im sure feel for sele but this injury will open the door for winterstein who played well in reserve grade scoring a try on debut and looking dangerous on the fringes hes a huge human being. Our back rowers have heart but not much size so winterstein will add plenty he should start next week.Id give egan and katoa till rd 4 to prove themselves if not maloney to 9 and luai to 6 we are much more dangerous with luai in the starting team.I prefer zelezniak at fullback and edwards on the wing dallin brings the ball back harder and looks more faster than edwards for mine.lastly klein and the refs have it in for us bigtime we must be the only team in the nrl who cant win a penalty count at home its ridiculous.

Eels have gotten the better of the refs at our home ground twice in 3 weeks. We need to find out why refs don't want givd us penalties aswell. Penalties are like 6 to 1 against us at home. Yet we arent 6 times more ill disciplined.

Klein was also one of the refs of the trial match, and I am pretty sure is the one who binned Maloney during the trial. Hope we don't encounter him again for a while.

Sivo on debut, hey let's kick it the Australian and NSW winger, every, freaking, time.

This baffled me too. I thought we should have kicked to Sivo's side instead. Bomb him. Turn him around, whatever. With him being only recently into first grade, all it would have taken is one dropped bomb and his confidence would have dropped and he would have gotten worse.

I can only imagine that the theory behind bombing to Ferguson was that, he isn't as good on kick returns when after he catches a bomb and then starts running, as he is when he is the second man (i.e. if we kick to the full back of Sivo, then good chance Ferguson takes the next hit-up and makes a lot more metres).

It did work reasonably well in stopping Ferguson making a lot of metres coming out of the Eels end, but didn't help us in trying to earn points or repeat sets.
