Turnaround not far off: Latimore
Dragons Den

KEEPING FAITH: Dragons veteran Jeremy Latimore has seen enough in his 11-year career to know his side can turn their season around. Picture: NRL Photos

IN 11 NRL seasons with five different clubs, there's few things Dragons prop Jeremy Latimore hasn't experienced.

It's what leaves him confident the Dragons can emerge from a five-game slump against Canterbury on Monday.

Currently 13th on the ladder, a loss to the last-placed Bulldogs would see their top-eight climb become perilously steep, but Latimore knows how quickly things can change.

"I've been around long enough to know it only takes a couple of wins to turn your season around," Latimore said.

"There was a point last year where no one gave us a hope, then we jagged a win against the Knights [in round 26] and came out a week later and put 50 on Brisbane.

"The week before they were going to go through and play the grand final according to all the experts. They don't need to be pretty wins, you just have to tough it out and things start happening.

"It's a funny game with the football gods and how the ball starts bouncing for you. You've just got to give yourself a chance by defending well and doing the simple things right which we're not at the moment."

That has been the focus for the Dragons on a merciful two-week spell with the bye which Latimore admits "couldn't come quick enough."

"We've obviously got a couple of boys carrying injuries and we haven't been playing that well so get away refresh was really good," he said.

"We've looked at a few things and hopefully we can go out there and start to build our season again because there's still a lot of footy to be played.

"It's not all doom and gloom, we just need to get a bit of confidence back in what we're doing because we're probably lacking that at the moment.

"As a group you don't forget how to play football, we just need to hold onto the footy and defend a bit better. They're two easy fixes, it's just attitude."

Latimore has been named to return from a knee injury that's hampered the first half of his season and saw him feature on a lengthy injury list.

Corey Norman will return from a fractured cheekbone this week, but James Graham, Tim Lafai and Gareth Widdop will remain on it for a while longer.

Latimore said they promise to provide a huge boost when they return if the Dragons can stay in the finals race long enough.

"We've had a lot of changes throughout the year with injuries to key players and things like that but it's how you deal with it," Latimore said.

"We haven't handled it that well but we've just got to get on with it. We get Corey back this week which is massive for this team.

"The Bulldogs aren't going to be easy, there's been a lot said about them the last few weeks as well. It's a key part of their season so there's pressure on them to.

"We've just got to dumb everything down and play a really simple style of footy. If we do that we'll give ourselves a chance."

A most ‘ orrible thought just occurred to me - should our Mary ever get the ‘ rusty ‘ bullet then surely , good heavens no , they the board would not give Latts the coaching role - would they ?
We do need a plan that includes a replacement as well. That is why I say bring in Gould as football manager and let him handle it. Now is a good time so we can be prepared for 2020.

Bulldogs v Dragons: Dogs sweat on Napa; mass changes for Dragons

They still have 13 matches to play in 2019, but there is sure to be a genuine sense of urgency for the Dragons heading into Monday's match against the Bulldogs.

They're only two points outside the top eight, but momentum isn't with the men in the Red V at the moment.

They lost their last five matches and slipped to 13th on the ladder.

As for the Bulldogs, their struggles started in round one and haven't let up.

Their only three wins have come against sides also outside the top eight in Wests Tigers, North Queensland and Gold Coast.

On the upside, the Dragons have injuries galore and the Dogs will be treating this one as a winnable contest.

As will be the case with many matches this weekend, the availability of Origin players will have a big say in the outcome of this contest.

Team news
Bulldogs: Just one slight alteration for the Doggies, with Adam Elliott and Raymond Faitala-Mariner switching places. Elliott will start at lock and Faitala-Mariner shifts to the back-row. Origin rep Dylan Napa is named as a reserve and will almost certainly come into the starting side if he gets through Wednesday night.

Dragons: The Dragons look nothing like the team that took the field against Cronulla two weeks ago. Paul McGregor has named all three of his Origin reps - Tyson Frizell, Ben Hunt and Paul Vaughan - among an extended reserves list and will see how they pull up after Wednesday before finalising his 17-man team. Matt Dufty returns at fullback, with Zac Lomax shifting to centre for Tim Lafai (syndesmosis), while Jordan Pereira was dropped to the reserves. Corey Norman makes his comeback and Jai Field has been named at halfback but could make way for Hunt. Blake Lawrie moves from lock to prop for James Graham (fibula fracture), while Luciano Leilua has been named to start at lock. Korbin Sims and Jacob Host will start if Frizell and Vaughan are rested.

Key match-up
Corey Norman v Kieran Foran. The expected return of Norman should give the Dragons more to offer in attack. If the Dragons forwards can win the battle in the middle, Norman will have time to work some magic. Foran, on the other hand, needs to kick-start Canterbury's attack.

For the Bulldogs to win
The Bulldogs need to find a way to start scoring more points. They're averaging fewer than 13 a game so far this year. High completion rates are one thing, being a consistent threat with ball in hand is something else.

For the Dragons to win
Injuries to key forwards haven't helped, but the Dragons are sitting in 16th spot when it comes to metres gained. As a comparison, the Rabbitohs average an extra 170m per game in ground made with ball in hand.

Brett Kimmorley says
It’s tough to get a form gauge on the Dragons – five losses in a row and now they also have players backing up from Origin. Ben Hunt is going to be exhausted after playing dummy half in Origin. With Kieran Foran back playing some decent football and asking questions the Dogs might be able to get the job done. They only problem for them might be getting to 16-18 points which will probably be enough. Bulldogs by 2

Stat Attack
Line breaks haven't been a forte of either side so far this year. According to NRL.com Stats, the Dragons have made 35 in 11 matches, while the Bulldogs have made 36 in 12.

And another thing ...
Canterbury aren't short of willing workers in their forward pack. They have three players - Aiden Tolman (seventh), Jeremy Marshall-King (ninth) and Josh Jackson (10th) all inside the top 10 for tackles made. Cameron McInness (second) and the injured James Graham (19th) are the only Dragons in the top 20.

DRAGONS

Five Things: Round 13 v Bulldogs

Ahead of the Dragons' crucial match against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Monday, we have taken a look at five things to keep in mind as the Dragons look to snap their losing streak.

Will they or wont they
One of the biggest talking points following every State of Origin game is whether or not the players will back-up in club land. That statement certainly rings true with four players potentially backing up from Game One on Monday.

St George Illawarra stars Paul Vaughan, Tyson Frizell and Ben Hunt all played big roles in Wednesday’s series-opener while Bulldogs forward Dylan Napa also featured. Though with it being the last match of the round, the players essentially have a five-day turnaround before the game – a regular occurrence during the season.

Normy's back!
Dragons fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing star playmaker Corey Norman is back after he suffered a broken cheekbone in Round 8. Norman played a pivotal role in the Dragons' four wins this season and particular starred in the Red V's Round 5 clash with the Bulldogs.

Norman ran for over 100 metres during the 40-4 victory and produced two line break assists and two try assists including a stunning team try finished by Ben Hunt late in the game. Keep an eye on Norman to see what impact he has on his return to first grade.

Team list headache
Doubts hanging over Origin stars and a growing injury list have once again forced the Dragons to reshuffle their line up.

Long-term injuries to both James Graham and Tim Lafai means there are a whole heap of potential changes to look out for, keeping in mind Vaughan, Hunt and Frizell have been named in the reserves.

Young forward Lachlan Timm remains a chance to make his NRL debut off the bench.

ANZ record
There is no doubt some stadiums provide teams with extra confidence. The Dragons' record at WIN Stadium is a testament to this given they have won six of their past seven matches there.

But the same cannot be said when the Dragons travel to ANZ Stadium. The Dragons have lost six of their past seven appearances there, a stat they will be determined to turn around on Monday.

Snap the losing streak
As the competition moves forward into the second half of the season, earning two competition points after each game becomes more valuable.

The Bulldogs have won just three matches this year meaning they sit at last place on the ladder. The Dragons are also searching to end a five-game losing streak. Both sides will be looking to turn their seasons around with a confident victory.

Stand by for complete burn out for Hunt, Vaughan & Frizell in the 2nd half of season 2019. This season is different to previous as we never peaked to then drop.

Mary sure learnt from the past seasons failings to alter his training & techniques.
