Round 2 v Cowboys

After listening to the latest Club update, I'm almost convinced 2021 is a rebuilding year. Yes, we've heard this consistently over the last couple of years, but that was merely a ruse to cover the cracks. With Webb and Hook, I feel they have identified the weaknesses, both off and on the field. Some will take longer than others to fix, no band-aid solutions either.

My guess is that Dufty is playing for a future contract and with the Warriors signing a young gun for 3yrs, that avenue has shut. Maybe the Titans, maybe the Dogs.
I'm almost certain both Merrin and Norman won't see another contract with us. BB and Ellis really have to show something this year to earn any extensions. Fui looked good in the 1st game, his future lies in can he maintain it for the entire season and not fade. Blacker worth persisting with for another season, as with JP as a handy and experienced back-up.

A lot riding on next months court case.

The signing of Molo was very welcome, and the prospect of young J Hunt being added to the prop rotation (sooner than later I foresee), mixed with a revitalised Vaughan and Lawrie finally showing his worth, our forwards are looking stronger since, well a long time. And lets not forget Blake Dowell, Josh Coric and Shalom O'Ofou.
Of course edge is the one area we appear to be slightly down on, however, I trust the coaching staffs judgement re: Kerr. Sims showed glimpses of form in the first round and hopefully he can continue to climb back to the form that got him SOO selection. The offset with him is he's now 31, nearing the end rather than the prime.
Luke Gale is a good young player, but unfortunately he's out injured atm and Jackson Shereb is a very promising back rower (current captain of the SG Ball Steelers) who was chased by a lot of clubs. These guys are a few years off unfortunately.

The backs and halves look pretty set for the next couple of years.

It will take most of this year to rid the stench that has fixed itself to many aspects of our club and patience is thin after many years of "rebuild" and "getting the team I want". At least Webb and Hook seem to be in tune with getting the team we can say are true Dragons.

At some point around mid season Hook is going to have to decide if this a rebuild year or are we a genuine top 8 chance.

If it’s rebuild he should drop Dufty, Rava, JP & Norman. Put Ramsey to fullback, both Feagai’s on the left, Sloan to right wing, Sullivan to 5/8 & Bird to the backrow. Build the combinations so we can have a crack in 2022 with a strengthened forward pack.
Yes, but I think a Bird 6 and Sullivan 7 halves combination is what we need in the halves.

Buy a Brown or Creighton type players for our right edge.

Vaughan, Molo, Kerr, Alvaro, Lawrie and Faamausili would appear to be our first grade prop stock for 2022. With De Belin at lock and Ford on the bench.

We'll field a vastly different team to the one that got beaten by 1 point in extra time last time we played the cows. We were missing Vaughan and Sims and had Hunt at hooker. Tomorrow we'll have 9 different players in while the cows will have a very similar line-up but notably missing Asiata and Cooper ( and Tomaulolo ) and have Morgan back in the 6 jersey.
The Cowboys 's attack was virtually non existent last week, creating few if any chances and only some scrambling defence and dropped balls stopped Penrith posting 3 or 4 more tries.
Their left side is very vulnerable and I'm sure Hook has planned to exploit that.

I think our boys will be more coherent this week as they get used to each other and the new plays and coaching style. If we hold the ball we're in with a chance. They need to start pedal to the metal though unlike last week where it took them half the game to warm up.

Well put together and said Dragonslayer. We will win several games this year but as you say I'm also thinking Hook will be treating it as a rebuild year and 2022 we will be in a far better position all round.

I guess other clubs will be rebuilding this year as well and there will be lots of players leaving and coming for those clubs so we have to be on our mettle and recruit the best we can and retain the best we have versus what the other clubs do.

WTF has Rava done wrong to flick him ? He is yet 23 and on the improve. You don't put players in NRL because they have " potential " to replace players who are doing their job.

Dont throw the baby out with the Bathwater !

Amazing Rava is 1 player who has definitely improved himself out of sight and continues to become more valuable as he further minimises his mistakes.

Not sure what others look at / see DP but obviously very different to what we are seeing.

There are plenty who you would sit in the exit row well before Rava.

I use to bag Rava for his ongoing mistake rate but he has really improved in many areas and l commend him for it. He will of course still punch out a few mistakes but hey, as long as he's having a genuine dig for us, making things happen and earning his place, l'm on board the RavaBus.

Anyone confident tonight?
I was but I am not anymore.
I saw on the news during the week, the breaking sports news was that Dragons boosted this week by the return of Corey Norman!
Is he going to boost the team?
Geez I hope he does but I have serious doubts. We cannot carry Norman again this year if he is going to be a passenger.
If he isn’t running at full tilt and playing like his livelihood depends on it then I don’t want to see him next week.

Saints NEED to win this game or it’s bottom 4. Dramatic I know but true.

Being a ‘glass half full’ person, l trust we can snag a win against the Cowboys tonight.

If we hadn’t been ripped off last week, we would’ve already have our first win of the season.
The Cowboys have a young untested coach whilst we have a seasoned coaching staff.

It’s time for Norman to stand up & hit the ground running and show an inkling of his ability. His chances are running out so he needs to make the most of it.

First game of the season for him.
Make it happen, C’om you Saints!

Yep dramatic..but after the last 7 years under McMisfire & Ors and what i have witnessed it is going to take time to get confidence back, so ATM never confident, just hopeful

Despite losing to the Sharks, I see us improving markedly from last season

it will take 4 to 6 games for the guys to gel

As long as the commitment and enthusiasm is there the consistency will come. If we had made half a dozen less mistakes we probably beat the Sharks last week.

Saints by 10

Yes.
And it’s instructive to read of the Bronco issues, which are not dissimilar to ours:

“You go across that whole list, no matter who’s injured and who’s not, there’s not a player that would grab that team by the scruff of the neck after 50 minutes and say ‘hey listen, follow me, this is how we change the direction of this game“

IMO Milford has been the rotten apple in that barrel

...& we’ve had 2 in our halves longterm

... and excruciatingly prolonged now by Hook’s misjudgments
- hopefully temporary, but at what cost we’ve yet to see.

Thankfully Vaughan pulled his finger out last week

Mrs Possm cam up to me this morning and said the score tonight will be Dragons 20 and Cowboys 8. I said how did you come up with that and she said;

'You know how you have been going on about the halves, I have a feeling that Griffin will act if things aren't going right in the first half. Dufty to 6, William to 2, Ramsey to 1 and Norman dropped to the bench.'

Mrs Possm thinks that Dufty will be a sensation at 6 providing Bird and Sims will cover for him in defence.
