Who said he was a failure at 6? He's just overplaying his hand at 6 and looks his best when he goes back to playing more like a second rower. He's a great player with any number on his back.
HE is just at his best when his focus is running straight into the line trying to break through defenders. He has the size and strength to make great metres, actually bust through the line or draw enough guys in that his offloads give the guy receiving it a lot of space to make shit happen.
When he plays a 5/8th role he tends to be a bit like Benji. Going for low percentage plays. His teammates aren't on the same page much of the time and his great plays can be undone by shocking ones. Good for highlights reels. Bad for building and systaining pressure.
We're very lucky to have Cleary doing those things. He's the reason we have done aswell as we have sonce Soward was punted. He's controlling games with his boot and often compensating for our weak defence up the middle by removing forwards from the equation early in the tackle counts. The kid is a genius. He's not perfect yet but he is so smart and has the skill to pull off the plays he sees unfolding in his head. He will be so much better in 2017 having the experience he has had this year. A full off season knowing he will be the man running the team and an off season where he can work on a combination with Moylan and Te Maire Martin.
Well summed up. Bryce is talented enough to make a go out of any position but unless he is going to be a half whats the point of continuing to play him there? Its gone beyond using him as a stop gap. Moylan spends half his time in the halves now which leaves us without a supporting fullback. How often do we make unsupported breaks and half breaks? It all relates. Bryce always looks better when he is running and attacking the line more rather then organising set plays and ball playing so why persist with it? That is my whole problem with it. Bryce's defense has gotten worse when it should be improving, we are hurting his development while he figures out his role in the halves and for what reason? It cant be a long term thing surely.
