He had tears in his eyes during the press conference, I reckon he's been tapped on the shoulder. I also think there might be something going on with Benny Hunt, maybe he has an offer to go play Hooker somewhere?

Since the JV, our worse year was 2013.

Finished 14th.. with a differential of minus 151.

We are track to beat that.

We are 15th with a differential of 128.

With the exception of Sailor’s promising debut, geez that was a depressing game to watch. A weaker squad next year and same clueless coach. Next year could get really ugly, as if running second last wasn’t ugly enough.
I agree i though Sialor showed some Oomphh and tried to get involved. One positive out of tonight
But of course Mary in the press conference pointed out he still made some errors
But it sounds like to me Mary is gearing him up for that utility spot......I hope not!
Put him in and leave him at fullback and let him grow in that spot

Defending premiers too strong for Dragons

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson was asked on Friday whether his team was playing as well now as they were at the corresponding time of last year’s premiership-winning campaign.

“I think we have improved on that,” Robinson said. “I think the combinations have improved and the understandings have improved, but so has the game.”

After turning on a first-half clinic to triumph 34-12 against St George Illawarra at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday night, the Roosters appear to be as well placed to win back-to-back grand finals as any team since Brisbane achieved the feat in 1992-93.

In fact, it is hard to recall a team playing with more confidence, control, direction and outright brilliance since Andrew Johns led a Newcastle side featuring Danny Buderus, Robbie O’Davis, Ben Kennedy, Steve Simpson, Matt Gidley, Mark Hughes and Timana Tahu to the 2001 premiership.

Cooper Cronk is the Roosters' version of Johns and his attention to detail was demonstrated by two first-half kicks – a sideline conversion after Joey Manu’s eighth-minute try and a deliberate 35-metre cross-field hook for winger Daniel Tupou to score seven minutes before the interval.

It was Cronk’s first conversion attempt since 2013, while playing for Melbourne, and his only previous goal was more than a decade ago in 2008 but undoubtedly the 35-year-old has been practising in case he was needed to deputise for Latrell Mitchell.

With Mitchell ruled out due to a calf injury, Cronk landed four goals and while he didn’t score himself the superstar halfback laid on three of his team’s six tries with clever passes and deft kicks.

None demonstrated Cronk’s ability to read the game better than his kick for Tupou’s try in the 33rd minute.

Receiving the ball 10 metres from the Dragons line and 20 metres in from the sideline, Cronk looked straight ahead and hooked the ball across field for Tupou to catch it in the opposite corner and stroll a few metres for a try.

The Roosters went to half-time with a 28-0 lead the only question being asked besides how much would they win by was whether anyone could stop them going back-to-back this season.

Welcome to the NRL, Billy Smith

Besides Mitchell, the Roosters were also missing co-captains Boyd Cordner and Jake Friend but fullback James Tedesco was almost unstoppable as he continued the form that many believe will earn him the Dally M Medal, while five-eighth Luke Keary was also outstanding.

The only shining light for St George Illawarra was the debut of 21-year-old fullback Tristan Sailor, who was presented his first NRL jersey by parents Wendell and Tara after being called in to replace halfback Ben Hunt.

Sailor scored a try in the 53rd minute after combining with halves Gareth Widdop and Corey Norman and ran for 152 metres in an impressive entry to the top level that confirmed he will be a contender for the Dragons No.1 jersey in 2020.

Fellow debutant Billy Smith, a 19-year-old former schoolboy rugby union star, also scored for the Roosters after backing up a 16th-minute break by Tedesco, who was sent racing into the clear by Keary.

Another Sailor scoring in the famous Red V

Prop Isaac Liu pounced on a Keary grubber kick to score in the 12th minute, while Cronk put lock Victor Radley over in the 27th minute as the Roosters turned on a razzle dazzle first-half performance in which they didn’t make an error.

When Cronk put Tedesco over in the 50th minute, the Roosters looked poised to better their average scoreline of 38-10 in the previous five matches but Sailor’s try and another by Dragons second-rower Luciano Leilua midway through the second half halted their dominance.

Dragons thrashed by red-hot Roosters in final outing at Kogarah

DEJECTED: The Dragons had no answers against the Roosters on Saturday night. Picture: NRL Photos
ONE team is making an ominous run at the premiership, the other can't wait for the season to end. It wasn't hard to tell which was which as the Roosters thumped the Dragons 34-12 at Kogarah on Saturday night.

The Roosters led 18-0 after just 14 minutes, running in three tries in the blink of an eye, and led 28-0 at halftime after a blistering opening 40 minutes that any side would struggle to contain - let alone one that's shut up shop for the year.

The Roosters were guilty of that in the second half, managing to add just one try to their tally, but the damage was well and truly done in what was one of the most impressive halves of attacking football produced by any side this season.

It leaves under-fire coach Paul McGregor with the task of drawing something out of his side in their final two matches against the Tigers and Titans to avoid finishing with the equal-fewest number of wins in the joint-venture's 21 seasons.

Steve Price's Dragons finished with just seven wins to finish 14th in 2013 but the Dragons risk finishing a rung below that if they can't win at least one of their remaining two games.

"We had no intent in our defence, pretty simple," McGregor said.

"You've got to have a bit more want than that. At different stages we had four in the tackle and they were just standing and playing the ball quick.

"We weren't getting onside, we weren't adjusting, we weren't traveling in numbers to get forward hard and one-on-one stops at the end of the shift weren't good enough. The first 40 minutes was nowhere near a standard we can accept.

"Our last three losses out of the four we conceded one try in the second half. We did that tonight, but those three games we were in the game fighting for a win up until the last five minutes.

"We were never in the game tonight. It was nowhere near good enough."

If their was a slither of a silver lining it no doubt came in the long-awaited debut of Tristan Sailor, who was a late inclusion after Ben Hunt failed to recover from a concussion suffered in last week's loss to Cronulla.

Corey Norman shifted to the halves allowing Sailor to debut at fullback and earn penalties on two of his first three touches, the first ensuring the opening kickoff sailed dead on the full and the second when he was hammered by fellow debutant Billy Smith in midair as he reeled in a bomb from Cooper Cronk.

The son of dual-International Wendell also grabbed his side's first try midway through the second half in what will no doubt be the start of a memorable career - but it was a thoroughly forgettable night for his side.

In contrast the ironically named Billy Smith could not have enjoyed a better start to his career, with the 19-year-old grabbing his first NRL try on an assist from James Tedesco in the 14th minute, part of a five-try blitz from the visitors in the opening stanza

Joseph Manu barged over the top of Tim Lafai to grab the opening four-pointer just six minutes in. With Mitchell missing, Cronk nailed his second ever NRL goal from the sideline for a 6-0 lead after eight minutes.

His side seemingly couldn't miss either, with Isaac Liu grabbing a rare try just three minutes later, breezing past Sailor and Corey Norman to ground a grubber from Luke Keary.

Cronk converted for a 12-0 lead after as many minutes. The onslaught continued when Tedesco sliced through on the eastern side of the park and handed Smith a memorable try on debut and take an 18-0 lead with Cronk's conversion.

Victor Radley got in on the act, carrying Paul Vaughan across the line as the scoreboard kept pace with the clock through the opening 24 minutes.

It was part of a lengthy highlight reel, but Cronk's pinpoint cross-field kick for Daniel Tupou's 30th minute try took the cake in a brilliant opening stanza from the visitor, who took a 28-0 lead to the break.

Widdop produced a 40-20 nine minutes into the second half, the first sign of life from the hosts, and Sailor fell just short of a try on debut three plays later when he was dragged down inches short of the line.

Cronk laid on another try for Tedesco in the next set as the lead ballooned to 34 before sailor finally opened his side's account in the 53rd minute. Luciano Leilua grabbed his side's second six minutes later but it was consolation and little more.

It was the Dragons final outing at Kogarah for the year and there may be some relief in that given the reception they received from their own fans on what was ironically Members Appreciation Day for the club.

Sydney Roosters humiliate St George Illawarra Dragons 34-12 at Kogarah

St George Illawarra's season has gone from bad to worse with the Dragons slumping to an embarrassing 34-12 defeat to the Sydney Roosters on Saturday night.

The humiliation was hardly the way the club would have wanted to send off departing captain Gareth Widdop, playing his final game at Kogarah before leaving the Dragons at the end of the season.

St George Illawarra trailed 28-0 at half-time as the reigning premiers ran riot at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium with five unanswered tries.

The Dragons are now on their own in 15th place on the NRL table. They are second last, above only Gold Coast, having lost seven of their last eight games. St George Illawarra have only won three games since round six. They are now on track to finish with the worst season in the history of the joint venture club.

Ben Hunt was left out of the Dragons side after the halfback suffered concussion in last week's defeat to Cronulla. Coach Paul McGregor opted to shift Corey Norman into the halves alongside Widdop, handing an NRL debut to 21-year-old Tristan Sailor at fullback.

Sailor, the son of former Dragons, Queensland and Australia winger Wendell, was arguably St George Illawarra's brightest light as he showed great speed to score a consolation try after 53 minutes.

But it was just about the only thing Dragons fans had to smile about all evening. At one stage in the first half, the Roosters led 24-0 and had completed all 15 of their sets in possession. It was at that moment that the host broadcaster cut to a shot of Roosters stars Latrell Mitchell and Boyd Cordner in the grand stand, with the premiers not requiring two of their best players to destroy the young, under strength Dragons.

First half tries to Joseph Manu, Isaac Liu, Billy Smith, Victor Radley and Daniel Tupou had the visitors in command. Dragons fans of a previous era will have been used to cheering Billy Smith tries at Kogarah. But the Roosters debutant of the same name as the St George Dragons legend gave the Tri Colours a glimpse of a bright future as he finished off an excellent left side raid through Luke Keary and Tedesco.

Tedesco got in on the act early in the second half, strolling over after Cooper Cronk had punctured the line before Sailor finally got the Dragons on the board.

Luciano Leilua then added another consolation for the hosts with 20 minutes to play as the Roosters simply did what they had to do. Cronk and Keary controlled the game masterfully as the Roosters looked to close out the game with as little effort and risk as possible.

The Dragons will host the Wests Tigers at the Sydney Cricket Ground next Sunday afternoon in the penultimate round, with the Tigers still chasing a place in the top eight after their demolition of Newcastle earlier on Saturday evening.

St George Illawarra will then finish their dismal season on the Gold Coast against the Titans.

But it's fair to say after this performance, the end of the 2019 season simply can't come quickly enough for the Dragons.

    Leader Scoreboard

Sydney Roosters 34 (Joseph Manu, Isaac Liu, Billy Smith, Victor Radley, Daniel Tupou, James Tedesco tries. Cooper Cronk four, Siosiua Taukeiaho goals)

    defeated

St George Illawarra Dragons 12 (Tristan Sailor, Luciano Leilua tries. Gareth Widdop two goals)

    at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah

Leader man of the match: James Tedesco (Roosters)

Dragons' next two: Tigers (home - SCG), Titans (away)

Wendell Sailor scored 127 tries in the NRL.

Now his son, Tristan, has just 126 tries to go before he catches the old man.

The teenage Dragons junior crossed the white stripe in his NRL debut at Kogarah on Saturday night.

He was called into the starting side when superstar Ben Hunt was ruled out pre-game.

Sailor was named in the halves but played at fullback, and looked like he belonged in the arena from the very start.

He had earlier been presented with his debut jersey by St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor.

Wendell - the dual-code international legend winger - stood quietly to the side and cheered on his sonduring the presentation.

Wendell was delighted when Tristan darted through a bunch of Roosters defenders and found his way to the tryline midway through the second half for the Red V’s first try.

Wendell played 33 games for the Dragons in 2008 and 2009.

By all reports, his son Tristan has a long career of his own ahead of him.

Mary blasts St George Illawarra Dragons for ‘no intent’ and being ‘nowhere near good enough’

Dragons players look on after conceding a try against the RoostersSource: AAP
Paul McGregor has taken aim at his St George Illawarra Dragons’ defensive efforts after they slumped to another defeat, this time at the hands of the Sydney Roosters in a 34-12 shellacking.

The Dragons trailed 28-0 at the interval before standing up to the reigning premiers and posting some points of their own.

The defeat leaves the Red V in 15th spot, and the underfire McGregor said that he expects much better from his side.

“We had no intent in our defence,” said a dejected McGregor, whose side have now lost 15 this season.

Cronk's killer kick

0:30
“It’s pretty simple. You’ve got to have a bit more want than that.

“At different stages there we had four blokes in the tackle and they were just standing, playing the ball quick, we weren’t getting onside, weren’t adjusting, weren't travelling in numbers to get forward hard, our one-on-one shifts weren’t good enough.

“Our first 40 minutes was nowhere near to a standard we can expect.

“The second half was a bit of scoreboard stuff, we won the second half 12-6.

“Our last three losses, we were fighting for a win until the last five minutes, but we were never in the game tonight.

“The other scores tonight were all 40 plus, we didn’t quite reach that. But we were nowhere near good enough.”

The only positive for McGregor to take from the performance was the display of young gun Tristan Sailor.

The son of Wendell scored a try in his NRL debut, and after a disappointing season for the Red V, McGregor sees Sailor as one of the club’s bright lights.

“He was sound, good debut, got a try and made a couple of nice touches,” said McGregor.

“But he made a really sound debut. Tris is strong in the gym, he’s still young, he has to develop a few areas around his game.

“He does all the right things to give himself the best opportunity, his career is quite bright because he can play multiple positions, No. 6, wing, centre.”
