I think about how I would have been at that age, with the cash, spare time & women pretty much throwing themselves at you. I used to socialise regularly with a Panthers player in the late 80's early 90's. The things I saw would make your toes curl. I also got a bit of a taste by guilt through association, ie being confused as a player by being out with more recognisable players. Good times I tell you. Lucky there were no mobile phones...........
Hmm, I was living in Castlereagh Street two doors away from a star player and next door to Darren Willis at that time. Darren Willis was a a country boy, a true gentleman with a gorgeous wife and family. Nothing to see here. The star player wasn't a country boy. He was exactly what most young blokes would be like in that position, living it large and having a great time. Nothing truly bad, but with mobile phones he could easily have been painted as a party animal and womaniser.
To say woman threw themselves at him, would not be an exaggeration at all. It is mind boggling to watch and I am not sure that has changed much when it comes to the new generation of superstars out on the town, except that all indiscretions are now captured and posted on social media. Of course there is also now a less tolerant attitude about behaviour towards woman which is a most welcome change from the 80's and 90's and long may it continue.
Just a point of clarification, his social life never seemed to affect the star player on the field, he trained hard and delivered in the big games. He was always a polite respectful bloke in person, but the girls just wouldn't leave him alone. Lucky bugger!!
