Winners don’t food food on the table money does.It will be what the amount difference is.I don’t blame him

$30k per Origin game. Extra TPA's that come with winning.

Say Burton takes overs to go be a half in a bad team. When that deal is over no way a high price half is staying if the team is missing finals still.

No way he is playing rep footy either. That is why players stay at good teams for less

Thank you, franklin. My sentiments exactly.

I'd rather win and play rep then just take the money. Evens itself out in the end

It really doesn't. They have a very short time to earn money and they're out in the working world with the rest of us. Also the majority don't get 5 years+. People overestimate how much us being successful will effect contracts.

Fwiw origin money is being cut in half.

As someone else said, young players don’t think about winning. They’ve got 10-15 years in front on them potentially, plus he’s too talented to be shunted to the forwards. His best route for maximising his earnings is either as a starting half or fullback.

You’re thinking like an older, wiser head. Someone who’s just starting out doesn’t put as much weight on winning. Playing starting footy in your preferred position, whilst getting paid handsomely would be more attractive.

That article says they already had the bulldogs ceo out there to see the parents which means they must already have some idea of what is being offered to them.

Playing with your mates is going to mean a lot to a 20 year old. Most 20 year olds want to have fun with their mates. They will look to play their preferred positions eventually but I think there is a fair chance they will sign shorter extensions and sacrifice money even to stay in a winning situation with their mates. They will need to see potential for regular game time though.

Time will tell in respect of our players, but the fact is many players have stayed at clubs like the Storm, the Broncos and the Roosters for less money because they want to be part of a winning culture and have a good career. Read the biographies of some of the ex-players, many of them talk about being approached by clubs with big money on offer but choose to stay for less money. Shane Webke is a notable example. He said he never regretted turning down bigger money. Football first, money second.

I think it is fairly simple, you are either somebody who cares more about the money or you don't. There is no way any sane person would have watched the Bulldogs for the last two years and followed their board shenanigans in the last five years and thought "yep, that's the club for me, I can't wait to sign. Even better now they have a young coach who failed in his last coaching job".

If football is first, players will stay, it its money, then they will go. The Bulldogs offer absolutely nothing to players to attract them. Nothing. A losing culture, the board imploding, a terrible roster so bad they just released 8 players. Ok, you get more money and you get to start every week. You get really good at kick offs and standing behind the goal posts watching the opposition convert tries.

Look what the Bulldogs culture and training regime has done to at DWZ. I hardly recognised the player being driven back 10 metres in every run. A shadow of the player he was when he left. What have they done to him? He was always error prone, but he was strong and run with purpose and heart. That is the fate that awaits any player daft enough to be attracted to the shiny gold on offer at the Bulldogs.

If they go for the money, they aren't the right type of player for the Panther's and we are best to let them go.

I agree there’s a chance he signs a short term extension, but it’s not like he’s been at the club throughout his whole juniors. He only came here a couple of years ago, so I wouldn’t put too much stock in the mates angle.

He’s good enough to be playing regular FG right now, and he’s staring down the barrel of another wasted season with us. Unless something changes like Naden leaving.

The mates thing is a fair point but none of them knew Burton when he debuted. He isn't one of the long time boys in the club.

You don’t seem to be giving any weight to the idea of playing regular FG footy, indeed possibly playing any footy if reserve grade doesn’t go ahead.

For someone like Burton it won’t just be a question of money. Being guaranteed a starting spot in the halves is about footy.

I could certainly understand Staines jumping at a 3x$400K deal with his injury history. That’s life changing even if his body does flame out and he needs to find a new career at 22.

Another issue is that IC has had many opportunities to play our reserves with the suspensions, injuries and to manage the workload of our star players but he hasn't.

Most sides rested their stars from the last round, we didn't. Despite having the Minor Premiership buttoned up.

You rotate these reserve graders into FG and show they have a place, its easier to keep them.

No, because if they have confidence in their ability, they will try and compete at the Panthers. Staines will replace Mansour or Edwards. Burton can play lock, centre or fullback. Does getting a guaranteed start at a lesser team help your career?

One thing you can say for certain, if you have the talent, you will get a chance at the Panther's. The days of signing Burns, Ciraldo et al are gone. Seven debutants at the Panthers in two years.

EDIT: My bad , I forgot Burns and Naden. Make that 9 debutants.

A half playing as a half sure helps his career more than anything else
