The mates thing is a fair point but none of them knew Burton when he debuted. He isn't one of the long time boys in the club.

He knows them now though and is part of a very tight knit playing group. As long as we can offer him some regular footy I think we have a good chance to keep him, you don’t get to that level without being a competitor, winning means something to them. The dogs have been anchored to the bottom of the comp for years they haven’t even begun to rebuild yet they really aren’t an attractive option for someone who cares about winning. It will probably come down to how ridiculous the offer is tbh but talents like Staines and Burton are always going to attract big offers we can’t stop that.

I agree there’s a chance he signs a short term extension, but it’s not like he’s been at the club throughout his whole juniors. He only came here a couple of years ago, so I wouldn’t put too much stock in the mates angle.

He’s good enough to be playing regular FG right now, and he’s staring down the barrel of another wasted season with us. Unless something changes like Naden leaving.

I very much doubt he sees this year as a wasted year. I put a lot of stock in the mates angle he doesn’t need to have been here since he was 14 to be tight with the playing group now,. We’ve heard plenty of commentators say how tight this playing group looks I’ve heard Api and Yeo actually say it’s the closest playing group they’ve been apart of, it’s definitely a factor as is success imo.

Either way there’s isn’t much the club can do if he wants to play 6 right now he will leave, sacking Barrett when he took the dogs job wouldn’t have prevented them or another club going after Burton and offering him that chance, it was in the paper that the dogs wanted him before pay got sacked and Barrett took the job.

Staines maybe, Burton, nope. Also Blade's post, he seems hopeful, and he is usually on the money.

With all due respect to Blade, he can only comment from our perspective.

He can’t really know what’s going on between the players and their managers. Let’s not forget, the managers are paid a percentage of the players contract. The more the player gets, the more the Managers get.

No, because if they have confidence in their ability, they will try and compete at the Panthers. Staines will replace Mansour or Edwards. Burton can play lock, centre or fullback. Does getting a guaranteed start at a lesser team help your career?

One thing you can say for certain, if you have the talent, you will get a chance at the Panther's. The days of signing Burns, Ciraldo et al are gone. Seven debutants at the Panthers in two years.

EDIT: My bad , I forgot Burns and Naden. Make that 9 debutants.

There’s no clear path for Burton after the year we’ve had, unless it’s in the centres if Naden leaves. We can talk about lock, fullback etc but we’ve got players that are kicking arse in those positions. Without reserve grade it’s almost impossible to prove your worth without an injury.

There’s a chance if Burton stays he might have two years in a row with hardly any footy, for someone at his crucial stage of development that’s not good.

I would not blame Burton at all if he left, it’s silly to say he’s not the type of player we want if he goes to the bulldogs. I can’t begrudge a guy getting time on the footy field after playing only 250 mins of footy this year.

Blade has been on the money in the past.

Or make it. He’s a very good coach, I think he’ll do well there, as long as he steers clear of the politics.

Time will tell. His stint at the Sea Eagles was ordinary.

Maybe not completely wasted, but only 250 mins of footy at his age isn’t great for his development. Not sure he’d want to do that two years in a row.

A player looking to play 1st grade and earn way more money than he’s worth.
Exactly. Money first, career second. If you are premier talent, you don't improve your career by signing at the wooden spooners with a failed coach. It's all about the money. This will be about what's important to these players.

We don't know what conversations have been had with Burton or Staines. Naden leaving is an obvious place for him. All this talk about him being a half will come to nothing if he keeps growing. He is already enormous and he hasn't had a few off-seasons yet. Watching him in the centres yesterday, the Bulldogs had trouble pulling him down. He is going to be a big unit and maybe too big for the halves.

Is that how you felt about the players Phil Gould brought to the Panthers in 2012 & 2013?

Naden leaving is the only obvious place for him in 2021.

And any growth from now on is likely manageable muscle mass, not many men are still naturally growing after the age of 20. He doesn’t have to get big.

We didn't sign a premier talent in either of those years, so I don't think anybody come to us to give up a promising career at a better club. I get your point though. I don't blame any player for taking an opportunity at another club if you can't get an opportunity where you are. Especially if it is a club who has a general manager who built the Rooster's dynasty, is the most successful NSW coach in history and who has won two premierships at two different clubs. I don't assume it is just about money.

Not really the same as signing at the Dogs, who have a terrible roster, have a board in disarray and is going through the process of a leadership spill. Add to that, the new coach is completely unproven and was sacked at his last first grade coaching job.

But that is not the case here. Staines and Burton are premier talent at a club that is the minor premiers and has debuted 9 players in two years. The club has made the semi finals 4 years out of five. They will be given an opportunity if they stay and fight for their place. They can and will succeed at the Panthers. They will make more money at the Bulldogs. The choice is simple. Money or football.

I doubt he would either but that’s what I mean when I said earlier if they can give him a plan for regular footy somehow next year we are a fair chance.

Im desperate to keep them both but if we lose them it won’t be due to poor management. It’s kind of unfortunate a struggling club like the dogs has come into so much cap space right as these two are able to talk to other clubs but I think they will do what they can to keep them. The reality is the dogs can offer them starting spots in the spine and better money. Not even I can argue that Burton should be starting now and Edwards has been great this year you wouldn’t move him anytime soon. I think we can offer Staines a starting spot on the wing next and going off blades earlier comments it didn’t sound like Burton was chasing a starting spot in the halves at the dogs.

Well we certainly tried to. Thurston came within a bees dick of signing with us. But we signed some players, likely on overs. That’s what you’ve got to do when you’re down the bottom of the ladder.

We were in a lot of disarray when Gus came to the club, maybe not quite as bad as the bulldogs but it was pretty bad.

I really don’t think it’s just a choice of money or football for Burton. For Staines, maybe. But not Burton. Staines likely gets a wing spot next year with us, but as we’ve discussed for Burton it could well be another year of very limited minutes.

Talking about Thurston, he once left a strong club for a struggling one. Worked out pretty well for him. Not always a bad move.

The only plan I see we can give him is if Naden leaves, I don’t see any other realistic option for 2021.

Ivan has said they have a long term plan for him. I believe it whether the player and Manager with the time frame is the issue

Thurston wasn't signed on crazy money though. They had the cap space to build around him. GC are about to find out how it limits the abilty to fill out the roster
