From a coaching perspective, what did he do wrong at the Sea Eagles.

Or are we running with the “He was just ordinary alright, just drop it.” Kind of statements.

His results, or lack of, speaks volumes. Yes I am aware that the board played a part in that. The bulldogs, appears to have the same issues.

The thing with Burton he wasn't even the best half in that Ball team. He often played a few positions Trindall was the one that was the star of the side. So it isn't like he was a half and only a half

I’m not saying he’s only a half. I’ve mentioned several other positions he could play.

DWZ came as a winger that everyone wanted in the 1. Look at Ash Taylor then another half that was hyped up took a payday with a struggler and has been ordinary since

There is a list a mile long of cases where promising player tries to skip a few steps. Ends up with more cash but doesn't get to any great level

Come on. DWZ was always a clutz, he doesn’t have the hands of Burton.

Ash Taylor has been playing pretty well this season.

Well we certainly tried to. Thurston came within a bees dick of signing with us. But we signed some players, likely on overs. That’s what you’ve got to do when you’re down the bottom of the ladder.

We were in a lot of disarray when Gus came to the club, maybe not quite as bad as the bulldogs but it was pretty bad.

I really don’t think it’s just a choice of money or football for Burton. For Staines, maybe. But not Burton. Staines likely gets a wing spot next year with us, but as we’ve discussed for Burton it could well be another year of very limited minutes.

Talking about Thurston, he once left a strong club for a struggling one. Worked out pretty well for him. Not always a bad move.
Since Thruston didn't come, nor did Todd Carney, it sort of proves my point. Proven stars who put football before money. I agree you have to play overs for talent when you are near the bottom and that is why it comes down to what a player wants. Money or football.

Look, I am simplifying the situation with Burton because he is such a talent who would get a place in any club if he chose to. Other players who are not potential superstars without his level of talent could view a move to the Dogs as a step up because they get a chance to be a regular first grader and make a bit of extra cash. No criticism from me, after all, this is their job and the way they feed their family.

It is wonderful that we are even able to have a discussion about why players want to stay at the Panthers, because we are on the cusp of becoming an elite club. We are not there yet, but if we can keep the junior development pathways working like they have for the last five or so years, we can move from "the cusp" to "actual". Can we dare to dream? Panthers, an elite club....

Yeah but we’re not talking established stars here. The Burton situation is much closer to when Thurston moved from the bulldogs to the cowboys to get game time in his preferred position. That wasn’t about money, that was about starting. I see no reason why that can’t be the case with Burton. And maybe he doesn’t even go to the Bulldogs, maybe he goes to the Tigers. But I don’t see how you can say it’s automatically about money until we at least know what he’s offered.

If the club wants to keep him they need a better plan than turning him into a ball playing lock. I don’t see his manager going for that before giving the halves or fullback a crack.

Maybe it’s best Naden does go to the Storm so we have a clear path for Burton to play FG.

I think the fact we have given Naden, Hetherington, Staines, Burton and Mansour permission to explore options elsewhere simply means we can’t retain all beyond the end of there current deals with all end 2021.

Personally, I think Josh Mansour will see out his current deal and if he want’s to play on, if fit and healthy, then he will see what his options are next season.

I think Jack seems to be the odd man out and much as I would love to see him stay he is at an age now where he needs to be playing NRL and not just outside our 17 so he is the one most likely to move on. He is highly sought after and will have no problem getting a three year deal on either the same money he is on now or improved money.

I think if Jack leaves, as some are predicting then I would think we will have sufficient money available to retain Naden, Staines and Burton.

How did Matt go in the centres?

I think one of Burton, Naden or Staines is going to have to go.

Laurie seems like someone we might be able to keep for at least a couple more years as a backup FB & Half.

Staines or Naden could take Mansour’s wing spot.

But there’s no real place for Burton in the short term without Naden or Staines going. I just can’t see how someone that talented sticks around to play backup. People talk about being part of a winning team, but if you’re not in the 17 how much do you feel a part of it?

Plus we have another super talented FB coming through who’ll likely be in the top 30 next year. Turuva. He’ll probably play backup winger.

Walking into P1 car park well after the conclusion of yesterdays game there was a large contingent of our fringe players walking into the cark park as well. They looked pretty pumped and united.

Turuva is going to be a weapon. Given he is a hard runner wing would be a good role for him

No doubt. But that’s not really what I meant.

of course they’re going to be excited with the club doing well, but I’m talking about how much sense of contribution you’re going to have when you’ve hardly played. You’re going to be a lot more fulfilled being a regular contributor to a winning team than just playing a bit part.

Unfortunately, anything I do wish is strange to you, apparently. With that I bid you a good night. I am off to bed.
Your post read as if you are hoping Too' is out injured. I'm sure that's not how you meant it, but that's why it came across as strange.

No I'm implying it is about money if he goes to the Dogs, they offer nothing other than shiny gold and a starting spot. The Tigers have a premiership winning coach and a decent roster. That could be a career move. Go to the Roosters or the Storm. That's a career move.

Such a weird discussion to have gone for several pages. I doubt anyone here or at the club wants Burton to go. It certainly doesn't appear that there's much more we could do to keep him though. We're having an unbelievable season and the guys in his potential positions are all playing incredibly well. Our halves have 40 something try assists between them this year, you don't push past players going that well.

The basket case Dogs are offering cash and a starting spot. We're offering a pathway to a position in whats shaping up to be an elite dynasty with his mates. Theres an argument to be made for both options. What anyone here would choose is irrelevant.

If he goes he goes. What on earth could possibly be done about it?
