Ken Thornett never won a premiership. I think more than Hayne not winning a premiership (which he may never do) is the competition he is up against for best ever Parra player. Guys like Thornett and Sterling and Price (in particular) and Mick Cronin, would all give Hayne a run for his money.
Cronulla and North Queenland are in the unenviable position of never winning a premiership.
We had fantastic players, two or three that I rate in front of Hayne, that won premierships. I think a premiership/s certainly come into the equation when trying to decide a clubs greatest player.
It's going to take at least another 4 to 7 years before Hayne could surpass Ray Price and even then Jarryd will have had to continue the extraordinary which may require the winning of a few premierships too.
The Perpetual Motion of Ray Price and what he achieved during his long career demonstrated his toughness, never say die attitude AND his brilliant footy brain. Peter Sterling & Brett Kenny may not have gone as far as they did, particularly during their early years in top grade, without Ray Price (and Mick Cronin to a tiny tiny lesser degree) looking over their shoulders.
The retirement of Ray Price (and Mick Cronin) was the door closing on our once great club. We've NEVER achieved ANYTHING like the days of Ray Price when we got into 7 Grand Finals between 1976 to 1986 (11 years). Some 27 seasons later our trophy cabinet is empty and ONLY two great Eels players have appeared since... Nathan Hindmarsh & Jarryd Hayne (posthumous notion for Jamie Lyon). Can you comprehend what heights these two players would have achieved if they had Ray Price playing at his best with them at lock????? Enter the greatness of Peter Sterling, Brett Kenny, etc... thanks to Ray Price, the KING of PARRA present amongst them.
So good was Ray Price that he must become an immortal in the near future. Suggesting Jarryd Hayne is the best Eel ever will still be construed by many Eels fans to be a massive insult to Ray Price and to the millions of Eels fans who supported Ray and the Eels between 1976 and 1986.
f**k, if Ray Price played part time like Wally Lewis did in Qld until he joined the Broncos, Ray would have been the King of Origin.... but poor ole Ray was playing mostly nine months per year of top grade wear and tear Rugby League for many years prior the emergence of Wally Lewis and for many many years after Wally appeared and continued as a part timer.
The ONLY other player that comes near to Ray Price or to his equal is Johnny Raper. Even the playing career of Ken Thornett (who I've seen play many many times) does not come anywhere near the high standards and class of Ray Price.
Wally Lewis, Bob Fulton, Reg Gasnier, Andrew Johns, etc, are no doubt immortals of our game but f**k, none of them can match what Ray Price achieved, even with a battered body brutalized by nasty nasty opponents.
