It’s a ‘no dickheads’ Policy, until a very talented dickhead becomes available - then the narrative changes to ‘we trust our no dickheads culture to get the best of out said talented dickhead’.
I’d argue for the perfect balance and almost squad harmony, you need the odd dickhead. If they’re all super nice humans, you’ll naturally lack something somewhere.
I believe a squad needs a good mix of personalities and traits… you want your good healthy lifestyle, solid pro’s, your good honest family men, a couple of bible bashers, but you also need a joker, a wind up merchant, a womaniser, a thug, a party animal….. each one brings a different dynamic to the group, each brings a different benefit for certain situations whether that be socially, at training or even ‘in game’ situations. The trick is getting the balance right, and having them all pulling towards and staying aligned with the same common goal.
A good example would be, if you’re a team full of super nice, bible bashing, never say boo to a goose fellas, there’s a fair chance of you come up against an opposition who want to play a rough, nasty physical contest, there might be no firepower, no personality within the squad who can be the leader against that tactic.
Jimmy Maloney is a great example, terrific player, but an absolute pest by all accounts, and definitely has a ‘use by’ date in each team environment, but his attitude and approach brings some unique advantages come game day.
