So (to get to my point): my belief is that there is little to no point in having a veteran 'backup' contracted for less than $80k unless he is genuinely NRL standard, or a massive risk that's worth taking. It is senseless, because effectively we'd be paying to strengthen the reserve grade squad.

If you're going to have vets, make them at least capable of doing something well in first grade, and cough up accordingly. This might mean 5-6 guys in the top 25 who are earning 100-150k.

If he is genuinely NRL standard, then what is he doing taking a deal where he is going to play reserve grade? Why not play NRL elsewhere?

Perhaps Mullaney is also being thought of as a backup half given Kelly and Roberts appear to be on the outer.

You could be right ED, he looks as though he might be able to fill in at 5/8 or a few other ball playing positions.

I dunno? How did the Dogs get Inu for 50k last year?

I think my point was that we pay young players with that money rather than spend it on old blokes UNLESS you can scam a deal, or take a major risk (ie, take a flyer on a talented bad boy).

Has he ever played in the halves before?

Given that he rarely even attempts to tackle from the FB spot, I find it hard to believe he'd up the ante in the defensive line...

I would think that the club is wary of letting rumours get out these days given our position on the table. No doubt until we move players on, there is the salary cap to work out, maybe we should do what others clubs do, just sign all we want and work backwards... imagine Shoebox if he is still around

I agree, I posted the same a while back. It's not like we have anyone standing out in the halves in the lower grades. Also in a perfect world it also helps if your back up half as some nrl experience - thus mullany fits this criteria.

Wasn't he playing some 5/8 in nsw cup over the last two years? I could be wrong but.

I seem to be on my own but I really rate Mullaney. He has some deficiencies - one being his size - but he seems to put in every game. He is very elusive - just needs to tidy up his defence.

Hodgson was not much of defender either, but no-one gave a shit about that.
