The average wage for a member of a 30 man squad this year is 381k. Need to stop living in the past about what 500k is.
$500K is still a fair bit above that though. Whilst I get that player salaries are going up because of the cap increase I still am not convinced that $500K is smart business for a winger who has only just played his first full season of NRL and still has serious defensive/handling deficiencies in his game.

If JAC is getting $450K and he’s one of the elite wingers in the game then I don’t see $500K as being justified for Dom just yet. Maybe in a few years but not right now.

Just as an aside, it's pretty incredible that we paid Joey $500k to stay with us in an era when the cap was like $3m or something. That'd be a ~$2m a year player today.

On your point, people definitely do get stuck in the past with how they view player salaries - myself included. You'd really hope the club didn't fall into the same trap on this one. It's a strong offer for Dom, but it's certainly one he has the potential to deliver on. I think the thing that bugs me the most is that we didn't try to match it over the long term by paying him more this year. It stands to reason that if we went hard to get Pryce and KPP here early that there must be something left in the kitty. If there's not then we've just totally shat the bed with the cap.

And just one last little addendum on the above - KPs contract now at 1.4m is no more or less obscene than it was at 1.1m a few months ago. It's the same contract, my understanding is that the majority of players have ratchet clauses - and certainly those that earn the bigger bucks.

Club would be wise to re enquire about getting KPP and Pryce earlier. Gives us a third season with them and also achance to lock them down before other clubs work out how good they are. That two year deal we gave them is fraught with danger IMO. If they flop though we are geniuses. If not expect more heartache.

500k for Dom isn't overs.

Alex McKinnon on twitter intimated he wants to be a centre. Interesting to know what the Roosters think, Manu and Suali'i aren't exactly a scrub centre pairing. Might be losing Suali'i

It’s obvious that Wing is an attractive option from the club’s perspective for someone of Young’s attributes. But, there is no reason Dom couldn’t have been a centre here, other than the idiotic contract offered to Gagai.

Knights football director Peter Parr is confident Newcastle remain an attractive club despite star winger Dominic Young electing to join the Roosters next season.
Young and his management told the Knights and other clubs chasing his signature that they were out of the running late Monday.

The 21-year-old has committed to the Roosters for 2024 and looks set to sign at least a four-year deal with the glamour Sydney club.

The Newcastle Herald understands the Knights offered in the vicinity of $2 million over four seasons but were still short of what Young had on the table from elsewhere.
Sources from Young's camp suggested the Knights were the lowest of the final offers considered.

Newcastle believed they were a chance to retain Young with a competitive offer but they were not willing break the bank for a winger. However, Young has spoken of his desire to be a centre.
"We thought it was a really good offer, and it was what we could afford," Parr said.
"We did everything possible that we could do to keep him, but at the end of the day it's a decision for Dom to make and you have to respect that."

Young's departure is disappointing for the Knights given they spent two years developing him into an established NRL player, and a bitter blow for supporters after he became one of the club's most popular players and a genuine rising star.
The English international had attracted interest from up to nine NRL clubs over summer following a standout 2022 campaign but was recently won over by a meet and greet with Roosters coach Trent Robinson.
"I think the club's still an attractive place to be," Parr said. "But for us, we need to be sure we convince others of that. We think we're heading in the right direction."
Young's decision to leave Newcastle has sparked debate about whether the club should persist with him in first grade or even release him early, potentially as part of a player-swap.
But Parr shot down the possibility of him being exiled to NSW Cup and said the club had no interest in an early release.

"Not at this point in time," he said.
"He's contracted to us and we've done all our planning around having him in the team. We're not going to pull our plans apart just because the Roosters might want him."
News of Young's decision came ahead of Newcastle's season launch on Tuesday night and little more than a week before the club's first game.
Newcastle is going through a re-calibration of how their salary cap is spent having recently signed a new halfback in Jackson Hastings, new fullback in Lachlan Miller and extended Kalyn Ponga last year on a revised mega-deal. The latter is also now playing in the halves.
But the Knights may live to regret not pushing to re-sign Young early last season when he was clearly emerging as an attacking weapon.
However, Parr only arrived at the club in August and had plenty on his plate to deal with in the opening few months of his tenure.

And once Young looked a chance to be picked for England, his management were always going to hold off for November 1, the date from which he could talk to other clubs, to test the market.
Young's performances at the World Cup, in which he scored nine tries in five games, also likely significantly increased interest from other clubs and his value.
The towering winger, among the quickest players in the NRL, has scored 18 tries in 26 games.
He appeared unfazed by his much-publicised recent contract talks in Newcastle's 36-14 trial loss to Parramatta on Friday, his first game of the year, scoring a try and narrowly missing a second.
Newcastle begin their 2023 season against the Warriors in Wellington, New Zealand, on Friday week.

Yeah if we really were the lowest at 500k then it makes me feel better about it all. That's not lowballing. I'm guessing Roosters have offered him Suali money.

There were plenty of people who wanted our club to not spend overs for a winger. You guys happy how the Dom Young situation turned out? Should we be the ones laughing and mocking the Roosters management for overpaying for a winger? Serious question because I'm very unhappy we left.

I can't believe people are writing off Parr already. He has only been here a couple of months and we were literally the worst run club for close to a decade. Surely no one expected him to fix all our issues and build a champion squad in under 6 months?

Now the media are saying he’s gone to the Roosters for less than what we offered. Probably only took a phone call from Uncle Nick to one of the Journos in his pocket to get it out there.

I've got no doubts the Roosters are calling in a favour or two with friendly media to help downplay and cause doubt over the size of their contract.

I've said it previously, IF the club offered him a reasonable amount and we stuck to our guns then I am ok with what's transpired. If the reports of us offering hime 2m over 4 years are true, then I say good luck to Dom at the Roosters.
