Knowingly offering overs just to be 'respectful' is a hilarious and insane concept with any player, let alone one who has been bad value for money on his current contract prior to this season (when he happens to be playing for a new contract).

This is the same club that let Barnett walk for free just to be nice blokes about it though so I guess nothing is off the table.
16 Origins including two this year. Reigning DB medal winner! He’d be short odds to win it again this year. Clearly you know more than people actually qualified to make these calls. Explain to us all how you feel overs is even a legitimate thing here, when clearly we have been deluding ourselves as to the man’s market value. It is a genius move to give your POTY award to a person you are about to offer a lot less to.

If he was asking for 500 k every club in this comp would be asking for a sit down with his manager. We probably offered that cos we thought his best days were behind him. He has played a combined total of 30 rep games for his state and country, 16 Origins if I am not mistaken. You have to be respectful and realistic. He has earned the right to ‘overs’
I don’t think any player has earned the right to overs especially if they didn’t play up to their previous contract. The only case where you could maybe justify it is if it were someone like say JWH at the roosters where he spent almost his entire career and played a major part in 3 premierships. You’d be ok paying overs because he’s been such a big part of that club and probably would’ve knocked back bigger offers during his time.

To be fair winning player of the year in a team that finished 14th isn’t the flex you think it is.
Quite simply when Friz signed he was pretty much the highest paid edge forward in the game, whilst he’s been good I wouldn’t really put him into that echelon despite what Freddy thinks.
You also have to factor in age, Friz is 32 this year so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that his best days are probably not ahead of him

Doesn’t matter if Friz wins player of the year, yes maybe to him it does, but he is a wholehearted player that will continue to give 100%+ and if he declined a bit over the next two years he will still fill in very well at 14-17 and contribute

WARRIORS BLOCK KNIGHTS

The Warriors will re-sign Adam Pompey after the centre rejected an advance from the Knights. The Knights remain confident Tyson Frizell will recommit to the club despite the representative back-rower yet to formally sign his contract extension.

While the situation with Frizell is inching towards a conclusion, Newcastle have missed out on securing Pompey.

Pompey and Knights officials met recently with the 24-year-old a free agent at the end of the season. The Warriors are now expected to keep him at the club with Pompey securing a starting centre spot this year.

This is a very good thing, but like the Luke Brooks episode we were lucky the club misses out on a bad recruitment target that the club thought was a good one.

Payne Haas will be on the market.
We can't afford him. He'll want about a mill.

That's only 200k more than a Frizzell or Saitifi... Ponga is on 1.4 million right? Imagine we used our cap better. We should definitely be able to afford Haas if we had some proper cap management.

I mean he's off contract so I don't know why we'd be offering him to other clubs. It would be such a Knights thing to do to offer him a contract because we felt sorry for him if he can't get another club.
Yep 100%. I think his best bet would be to head back to Qld and get a q cup gig with one of the feeder clubs

My favourite was when we initially tried to let Fitzgibbon go years ago but he said no he wasn’t leaving so we re-signed him 😂

Left field, Hass is contracted end 2024, say we offer him contract 2025 onward and cover his cost $1m+ by not signing ext for Gagai and JSaf. Understand he may want to move early, 2024, but at least an offer means a chance

I would hazard a guess that Gags will probably either retire or fall back onto a bargain year-by-year deal at the end of this contract. He came home to settle back down in Newcastle, he's not going anywhere now and has made his cash.

JSaf I would happily ditch too... but even with those 2 I still don't think it gets us any closer to signing Payne. We'd need to move DSaf on for that, and no-one is taking him off our hands for his current contract value and length.

Does anyone know if we're still paying Klemmer to play for the Tigers next year too? I'm still flabergasted that we're so pressed in the salary cap department when over 1/3rd of the squad hasn't even played first grade. It's embarrassing for all involved.
