People on here give a lot of crap to Mamo which some is justified but to say fullback is 50% of the problem is a joke. We have a team full of players who are not first grade quality and the majority of the first grade quality players we do have are severely overpaid. Despite what some lead themselves to believe Mamo's performances at fullback (which have been solid in a hopeless team) are not the reason we are awful

Yeah sure, but Mamo is not a very good player. He pulls one in 20 plays out of his arse, and seems to have nothing outside of that. I really don't know if the guy can pass the football... the only time I can remember him doing so was inside our own 20m line a week or 2 ago. He certainly has less than zero instincts for passing, as we saw as he absolutely butchered a gimme on the weekend... and it would have been passing right to left, too.

I'm not sure I subscribe to the notion that you need a second 5/8th at fullback in the modern game, I wouldn't call the fullback sweep a 5/8th play, really... but you do need to be able to pass. You really do... and he can't, and has had years to learn now.

A good fullback acts as an extra half to link up in attack, bobs around waiting to take offloads (a lot of our forwards have been trying to offload but there's never anyone there to take them) and also organises the defensive line.

We struggle badly in all those areas and a good fullback would make a whole heap of difference to the side in a lot of areas.

50% isn't an exaggeration. Obviously we have a lot of areas of weakness but getting a good fullback in the side will help a lot of the other come together (plus a grueling defensive offseason obviously). It's simply too much of an important position in the modern game to not have a quality player there.

I didn't say fullback/Mamo was 50% of our problem - we know what he can and can't do. I meant that getting a quality player in there would go a hell of a long way improving a lot of areas for the whole side (not just fullback). I like Mamo's ability to occasionally do something special but he's a limited player in terms of what a fullback needs to offer in the modern game - and you can't have a limited player in that postion now.

I understand what your saying and agree with your assumption of him, it will be interesting to see what Brown does next year

Cameron McInnes had apparently asked for a release, it looks like he will go to the Dragons but I wouldn't mind him at Newcastle with Levi. Althouhg if we can get Rein at the right price I think that would be perfect for us

I've been hearing recently that Gold Coast are looking to shed players now that they've got Hayne for next year and Josh Hoffman might be on the outer. He's played heaps of fullback and only switched to the centres a couple of years ago, from memory he was a gun fullback when he was at the Broncos.

He's Dane's cousin as well which might give us a chance of luring him to Newy, he would be a good value signing imo especially given we clearly need to get a fullback from somewhere.

Thoughts?

If Brown is after a fullback with a passing game then Hoffman won't get a gig here.

I agree that we need a fullback with a passing game but who is out there that we could get for next year that actually offers that? I can't think of a single fullback who would offer that who is either off contract of on the nose at their club. But out of the alternative options out there Hoffman wouldn't be a bad choice, also Mead is another player reportedly being shopped around and I'd be happy for us to get him too.

Also there's been all this talk of us being interested in Holmes but I'm not even convinced that he has a passing game because he's been playing on the wing, I don't want to fork out big money for him and then find out that he can't throw the right pass at the right time.

Hoffman doesnt have that much of a passing game, true, however he does offer more than Mamo in a couple of areas

1. He is a strong kick returner. He doesnt get constantly pushed back like our silky haired plodder does
2. Hes a strong defender
3. He is also an excellent centre which would allow us to move either Ross or Pete Mat to the back if needed.

Honestly, we'd be mad not to look at a guy like Josh imo. Him being Danes cousin surely gives us some play

Hoffman would be a good outside back for us. Strong ball-runner and would be handy at the right price. We do need some good depth there as well imo.

But like Mamo, he's got very limited ball-playing ability and would be a terrible signing if we were to play him at fullback. Was behind Mead and Zillman for the FB spot before Hayne arrived which says a bit.

On Marathon stadium there talking about Kurt Capewell and Junior Roqica. No idea how much truth is in it. I am a big fan of Capewell, i think he is a better player than barnett and will make a real contribution to us. roqica is very average though, NSW Cup player even for us
