Scott was apparently all set to turn his back on us and sign with the cows. I reckon play it cool now and withdraw the offer. Let the cows have him, I doubt he was ever really coming here anyway.

Definitely let him go,we look desperate chasing him now. and every other player that comes our way will play on that. But in saying that gotta get bird ,give him mullens pay cheque.

Jack Bird - throw the cheque book at him Browny. Open it up bro. Mullo and Hodko $$$ = more than enough to make Bird a huge offer.

We would have to get rid of Hodkinson to offer Bird his money. I'm all for signing Bird though. It's cliche to say but he is just a genuine footy player and has a win at all costs attitude. He's wasted playing centre, the more he can get his hands on the ball the better he'll go.

The fact that Matt Scott hadn't taken the time to come down to Newcastle tells me he wasn't that serious. I know his wife had a baby recently but that was a few weeks ago and he could have taken a day or two to come see the club with his family. I can understand not wanting to travel with a baby or leave his family at home for a day or two but you would think that if he was really that keen to sign with us he would have come down here already.

Prior to the injury I was happy for us to sign him but now I'd rather we go looking for someone with a few more tomorrows. It's hard to see Matt Scott staying at the same level after an injury like that and I can't see how we would get much value out of him. If he recovers and plays at the same level for the cowboys over the next couple of years then good on him but I would rather we don't take that risk now.

I doubt the cows would have been too accommodating letting him off training to go investigate signing with another club, especially since they wanted to sign him themselves. And once the season started no chance!

We're still discussing Scott on here? Surely there is no chance of Brown signing him. A highly paid 32/33 year old who is coming back from an injury that can take at least 18 months to bounce back from, should not be in our plans. Time to move on and look for another prop or 2 who have some decent kilometres in their legs and who is at least a possibility of coming here.

Knights apparently offering Bird $2.7m over 3 years to play 5/8, Sharks offering around $200k less per year and want him to play lock. He visited Newcastle and met with club officials before round 1.

We could potentially have 2 of the players of their generation in Ponga and Bird if we can get the latter over the line. That seems cheap to me for a half of his calibre and age, too. Legitimate competitor, like J Reynolds but with skills.

I'd much prefer Bird than Hunt, and look at what the Dragons have thrown at Hunt. Get it done, Mooney.

Ok so does this mean we are offloading hodkinson and lamb moves to half if we get bird?
Good question and one I hope we have to find an answer for.
Pythian is still unproven but has potential.
Can Ponga play halfback?
1. Pythian/Ponga
6. Bird
7. Ponga/Pythian
9. Levi
Holy shit!

Ponga signed here because he wanted to play fullback.

1. Ponga
6. Bird
7. Lamb
9. Levi

Seems more likely, with Phythian playing Cup and being first cab off the ranks for fullback and halves depth. Would have to find a team to take Hodko off our hands though

I thought he only signed for 2 years? Don't need to find anyone if his contract is up.

Bird is very good don't get me wrong. Natural footballer and great competitor. But player of his generation might be taking it too far. Would be happy to have him here though.

Not sure if he's a #6. He doesn't have a kicking game and can't lead a team around with organisation, we would need a very good number 7 to make it work long term. I reckon his best position in the future will be a roaming #13 allaround the ground. But I reckon he's a guy who we should defiantly go all out for and worry about his position later.

I'm not sure there's many footballers his age that I'd like to have here more. Agree with worrying about his position later, I could see him making a good lock, too. He'd make a good classic running 5/8th, hell it's not like Lamb would need to do much more kicking than he already does.

Does Ponga have a kicking game? Could he develop one? Such a talent. We don't necessarily need all our kicking to come from 7 and 6, either.
