I think obviously it'd be great to sign Watson, but I'm not sold on paying more then the reported $400,000 we've offered, especially with the rest of the season to go and an offseason to secure some mainstay front rowers. I'm wishful thinking here but maybe we'll be ok with LAmb, Cogger and Pythian as our halves.. We just need some engine room champion players to surround them.

Besides the way Meaney is progressing, He will likely be understudy to Ponga Next season and Pythian fighting it out with Cogger and Feeney for halves position with Lamb

Yeah I guess my point is I don't think Watson is a magic bullet. You would just be throwing another kid into the mess.

I don't totally disagree with you. But it's slim pickings out there. There is some massive potential in Watson and he looks like he's ready to unleash it now, not in a few years. It's a gamble, but most signings are. A 34-year-old Cronk is a gamble - I don't think his form is all that good, which is a worrying sign at his age playing only for the best teams going around. Cronk on $1million for one year or Watson on $500k for four years? I'd go the latter.

ALSO... With squad Brown and Mooney are assembling next year it really is go time for Brown and the team to click. we need to aim for 10th upwards next year.. simple as that... If we get lucky with injuires for most part of year and the depth we've created with a number of rookies playing FG and the likes of Starling and Hughes and Meaney coming through... Whilst we may lack a STAR playmaker... could have ourselves a very competent team.

I also agree that signing at least one but preferably two experienced, well above average middle forwards is absolutely vital. Graham is probably the best signing we could make right now. I'd take Graham over Maloney.

We wouldn't have to offer him what the tigers are offering him to get him.

From all reports he wants to come here, wants to play in the halves. There is no reason why we can't offer him 500k and see if he takes that over the tigers 600k. Or why not offer him an extra year than what the tigers offered him and back end it? Maybe $2.6mil over 4 years, that's 650k a year averaged out, but back ended could look like 450k, 650k, 750k, 750k. In 3 years time 750 k wouldn't be huge money anyway

To me that sounds like a recipe for another wooden spoon. Show me a good team without at least one fairly high quality half. We're all locking Lamb in like he's that guy and needs support, but he's barely even a first grader himself. Nobody is offering Lamb $500k to jump ship, that's for sure.

Plenty of times in he past few years we have played well enough to win but still lost. And a massive part of that is never having any genuine top talent in the halves to convert field position into points. Hodko is so slow and predictable that he doesn't trouble the defence inside their half, and that's been a major problem.

I do think we need a big upgrade in class and skill in the halves, not just experience.

Fair points. I meant more next year only and in the meantime plan for the next top playmaker to come on the market.

Maybe Watson hoping we will up our offer even though he intends to sign with us, if he can get the money, the club, the position, yes all 3, why not try and if money doesn't come 2 out of 3 ain't bad

Could be, who knows with player managers involved.

I guess if we miss out on Watson we are probably the only club that can afford James Maloney's asking price if the Sharks offer to release him.

If Cronk actually decides to play we would probably be the only club that could afford him as well
