Just saw another tweet from the Knights saying it’s a re-signing which immediately takes the wind out of my sails haha.
Right, so it's Fitz. Good news, but boring.

If it's Buhrer or some shit I will just laugh my arse off. Worst marketing team ever. Yeaaaahhh let's tease a huge f**king signing while we're in the papers trying to poach an Aus rep front rower... and then switch it for one of our fringe/bench players when we drop the news. rofl.

Good time to be a Knight. Exciting but I think after years of disappointment, we are all worried it's gonna turn sour last minute. Personally, I'd love to sign the premier prop in the game but it would mean Woosh was wrong as f#ck and that would mean as much as a premiership to me.

1) It’s Buhrer
2) it got people talking, yourself included. Yeah sounds like terrible marketing to me.

It got people disappointed, is what it got. You seem to equate marketing with the ability to get people talking. Mitchell Pearce humping a dog also got people talking. Great marketing, that.

Difference being this was planned. Comparing that incident to this one is ridiculous.

What does it being planned have to do with anything? What do you think this does to build goodwill in the Newcastle Knights brand?

It is a blunder. It's not a massive blunder, but it's not smart in any sense of the word. "Getting people talking" is not the beginning and the end of marketing. Building trust and goodwill in the brand is the primary mandate of the social media team (or it should be if they know wtf they are doing), and this is not a particularly shining example of that.

There are probably agencies out there that measure the success or failure of a campaign purely by the numbers (retweets, likes, etc)... however anyone that actually knows what they are doing will be doing a deeper analysis on those metrics. If they've done this just for likes and retweets, then I would advise them that it is a short sighted social media strategy that doesn't look to build sustainable growth. People are growing wiser to clickbait and bait and switch marketing strategies, and it turns people off.

So, in my opinion, it's either calculated and bad strategy... or it's not calculated and just stupid.

I think that’s why they decided to announce that it was a re-signing. I could only imagine what uproar there would be if complainers such as yourself found out at 4pm that it was only a re-signing and not Klemmer. You seem to be well educated on marketing, maybe send them an email to give them a few pointers

Indeed, the second tweet was absolutely damage control when they'd realised what they'd done. I don't think I need to send them a message, they know what they did and how they duffed it. As I said, it's not a world ending blunder or anything, it's just a bit amateur. I've seen larger mistakes by more knowledgable people, so it's hardly unheard of.

The truth is they've probably had this promo material tee'd up for a little while now - certainly longer than the Klemmer news has been out. They just needed to be more cognisant of the current media narrative and fit in around that. It was a bit tone deaf... and I kinda feel bad for whoever the announcement is for now. What should have been a positive announcement will likely have idiots on social media having a bitch now.
