Rumoured Targets 3

Canterbury have drawn up a hit-list of frontrowers led by Sydney Roosters enforcer Dylan Napa as they prepare contingency plans in anticipation of David Klemmer pressing ahead with his quest to walk out on the final two years of his deal with the club.

Klemmer has requested a release citing personal reasons and the expectation is that he will join Newcastle on a four-year deal worth upwards of $4 million in coming weeks.

That will leave the Bulldogs cashed up and eyeing off potential replacements. The most obvious targets are the frontrowers who will hit the market on Thursday — clubs are allowed to approach rival players who enter the final year of their deals from November 1.

A host of frontrowers are among the players coming off contract at the end of 2019, the list topped by Roosters and Queensland hardman Napa. Others open to offers from Thursday include the South Sydney’s Burgess twins and England prop James Graham.

There are also young and emerging options in the form of Brisbane duo Patrick Carrigan and Joe Ofahengaue.

However, Napa shapes as the most like-for-like replacement, albeit without the workload or engine of Klemmer. The 25-year-old is entering his prime years as a frontrower, having helped the Roosters to the premiership only a matter of weeks after returning from suspension for the grand final.

While the Bulldogs would be loath to lose Klemmer, his exit would help ease the club’s salary cap burden and leave them in position to take advantage of the mass movement that is expected to begin when five new coaches begin official duties in coming weeks.

Manly coach Des Hasler has already begun at the Sea Eagles and it is understood a number of players are up for grabs as the two-time premiership winner attempts to clear some room under a cap which is already restricted by financial penalties for cap rorts over the past five years.

Rumours have persisted about the future of Martin Taupau for months while his front-row partners Addin Fonua-Blake and Lloyd Perrett are believed to be up for grabs.

Parramatta prop Kane Evans is also understood to be available after a troubled time since joining the Eels. Aside from Napa, the marquee names among the group are the Burgess twins and their respective futures will be in the hands of incoming coach Wayne Bennett as he prepares to take the reins of Souths.

Bennett has his hands full with the England team but he also has some big decisions to make with the Rabbitohs given the number of players they have coming off contract in a year.

Aside from the Burgess boys, hooker Damien Cook is the other prominent player eligible to talk to rivals from Thursday.

The NSW and Australian hooker is preparing to enter the final year of his contract and is seeking a significant pay rise in line with his representative status, Rabbitohs officials confident that he will sign a fresh deal keeping him at the club.

It is believed young stars Cameron Murray and Campbell Graham are already well down the road towards new deals.

The Burgess brothers are another matter entirely given the Rabbitohs have already invested a significant amount of money in older brother Sam and have been linked with the signing of Tevita Pangai Junior in 12 months time.

Pangai Junior has aligned himself with Bennett and there is every chance he could follow him to Sydney — Bennett has signed from 2020 but the expectation is that he and Souths coach Anthony Seibold will switch positions in time for the upcoming season.

Feel a bit sorry for Buhrer caught up with everything going on, Klemmer etc, but he was always a likely signing due to his versatilary rather than his size and dynamics.
Since Griffs injury and the lack of Hooker back up he was always likely to be signed due to versatility rather than over all ability. His overall leadership will be most appreciated by the younger set, those coming from u20 and likely to be a few. Don't and hope we don't see too much of him in 1srs but nice to know we have someone like him in reserves

I've heard Brown comment how good Buhrer is at analysing video replays and games. He has an ability to read the games.
I don't expect to see a lot of him in firsts this year but I think he is an asset to the club. I can see next year as being a transition year for him. Into what I don't know since he is still only 28.

Would anyone consider swapping dan saifiti for Klemmer? Or him and his brother? Or even Herman? How much is Klemmer worth to the knights if the Bulldogs won't budge on a release?

I really think we're going to have to bite the bullet and resign ourselves to losing Josh King. It's a tough decision, with Josh being a Newcastle junior and all, but I don't see any other way forward. I'm sure the decision will come back and bite us in the future, but it's a professional competition these days and sacrifices have to be made.

No swaps.

Dogs won’t trot out an unhappy player and if they make him stay managers won’t let their clients near the club.

Well reasoned, although the assertion they won't play an unhappy player is (I guess) founded on the assumption that Klemmer would just drop his bundle. Do we think he's that kind of player? Do the Bulldogs?

Regarding managers, the whole debacle is probably a vindication of their value to players given Klemmer got himself into this situation by negotiating without one.

From what I understand Dogs aren't really interested in anyone from our roster but for arguments sakes I wouldn't swap Daniel Saifiti as he's someone I can see going to another level playing alongside Klemmer. They can have Jacob, Barnett, King, etc.
My feeling is Taupau will leave Manly to sign with the roosters who'll in turn let go of Napa who the dogs will target

Herald saying Klemmer has been granted permission to talk to other clubs.
"Newcastle Is in the box seat to sign marquee forward David Klemmer after the Kangaroos prop was formally given permission by the Bulldogs to talk to rival clubs."
Also,
"
Gardner denied the Knights have already offered Klemmer $4.6 million over four years.

“He is a marquee player so his numbers will reflect that status,”he said.

“But that [$4.6 million] wouldn’t be what we are offering. Certainly, I don’t know where that number has come from. That number has not come from us.”"

Knights fans should all take to social media saying that we hope the knights don’t shop Josh King to the Bulldogs and that we wouldn’t want to lose him. Maybe that’ll fool Bulldogs management into thinking he’s worth trading for haha.

On a more serious note I wouldn’t be against a player trade but I can’t see it happening given the Dogs would want someone half decent in return and apart from Herman or DSaf the rest of our front row is shit. There’d be no point in trading either of them either because the two of them would learn a lot of Klemmer and would take their game to another level.

I agree Klemmer would take the young fellas to the next level, but Klemmer has something that just cant be taught and that's MONGREL . He's got it in spades, I love the way he plays the game. I would suspect the next time an opposing player puts a cheap shot on one of our boys Klemmer will take their head off.

He's got a bit of Chief about him

Mongrel can't necessarily be "taught"... but I think it can be infectious and rub off on people. I hope it can anyway.
