Rumoured Targets 3

For the past couple of seasons, I could see the logic behind our signings and targets. However, I don't get Staggs... He is a wonderful centre but do we really want to pay that kind of money for a centre when we have a ton of issues else where.

He could be a handy running 5/8 as well.

Might give Clifford a bit too much responsibility at 7 next year but could be an exciting young halves pairing

Personally I think we need a couple more Hymel Hunt style signings in the outside backs, guys who will do their job every week and won’t cost heaps. So far out of our outside backs Hunt and Best are the only two who pick themselves. Edrick seems to be constantly injured and the talk is they’ll let him go so we really do need to hit the market for a couple of solid contributors in the backs.

We’ve seen glimpses from Toa but he has so many errors in him and Tuala’s confidence seems to be shot and Shibasaki can’t hold the ball.

Dom Young is a decent prospect but will take some time and effort to develop. I wouldn’t mind seeing him get a few more games this year.

Staggs signed with Broncs this week. Not really sure why he still comes up in conversation. If we are planning to use Jake as a 7 then he has to play there from next season. Not bide his time at 6 till Junior leaves. I am not going to be surprised if a few clubs who are in desperate need of a halfback enquire about Pearce’s availability next season. If they offer a couple of years then he might decide to leave. The general feeling I get is he wants to stay and fight for his career here.

100% this

Have a look at both Penrith and the Storm, the comp benchmarks, and their their outside back recruitment. Young, solid low cost and dependable guys like Jennings, Smith and Mimarovski. We should be looking for much the same

The only issue is those guys have come into a system where everyone around them does their jobs so they have confidence to do theirs. Might be tough getting that at Newcastle

You can get away with mid-tier outside backs if your halves/system is outstanding. That is not the knights.
Doesn't matter if there are world beaters out their either of course. Just look at what we've done with Best or the Broncos with Coates and Staggs. Complete waste of talent

It's a small piece of a much bigger puzzle for us sure but it's something we need to action. Having Tuala and Toa as current 1st choice outside backs is depressing

I feel sorry for To'a, he's played 16 games and every single one of them he's been picked on the wing, a position he didn't play in the juniors, he's a fullback that can play centres, he's someone who likes some space to use his footwork and try to beat his opposite one on one, having him on the wing and in particular outside Tuala completely negates his best attributes. If I'm AOB I'd give him a shot at fullback this week given Hoy is rubbish

Just had a little look at an off contract list and here’s a few outside backs who I would be looking at who wouldn’t cost too much but I think would provide value.

- Tom Opacic
- Javid Bowen
- Patrick Herbert
- Nick Meaney
- David Mead
- Braidon Burns

These are all guys who I think have shown they can be good solid first graders and wouldn’t command too much money. I reckon we could get Nick Meaney on the cheap given he might want to come home and could play on the wing and it’s not likely that he’s going to be a starter at the bulldogs next year given how much they’ve spent on big name wingers and centres.

Anyway this is by no means an exhaustive list but just a few guys who I think have played well when the opportunity has presented itself and help us keep money available for key play makers and forwards.

I thought To'a had really picked up his game the past few weeks. Previously, he was way too passive but now he is using his footwork to get past defenders and has some aggression in him. His reads on defense are Uate-esque but probably because he never played on the wing before. Why not give the lad a run at the back instead of Hoy or let him have Tuala's spot?

Id take Opacic here in a heartbeat

He was always a standout for Redcliffe in their premiership winning/contending years and has been solid as a rock for Parra

I’d be going with Bradman at fullback cos I reckon him not playing at FB is the best kept secret in this club. Him running the ball back would be a sight to behold and he played for NSW U 18s there 2 years ago if my memory is correct.

Best definitely isn't a fullback, his body isn't built for repeated high speed efforts, the game for NSW under 18s at fullback was not one of his better games.

Meaney is rubbish, he's fast but has zero physicality. If you like wingers who can't tackle and offer absolutely nothing at all in terms of yardage runs Meaney is your man

Why don't we give Stagg money to Nicho Hynes? He is a local lad as well right? Seems like a good young half.
