The future of NSW State of Origin forward Angus Crichton at the Sydney Roosters is uncertain despite reports last year he had signed a two-year extension.
The truth is no contract has been signed or registered with the NRL.
It’s a touchy subject at the Roosters because Crichton has had a slow start to the season.
He was seen at training last week in an animated conversation with coach Trent Robinson.
Crichton is managed by David Rawlings who was keen to play it down when we spoke on Friday.
“We don’t do business and play it out in the media,” he said.
“There’s still a couple of bits and pieces to be finalised around the contract before we get to the final position. We’ll see how it plays along.”
It is understood the new offer involves a substantial pay cut to free up money for the signing of Brandon Smith.
On his day, there are few more destructive edge forwards in the NRL.
However, like many of his teammates, Crichton has struggled this season.
He has been criticised for lacking energy and aggression with his defence.
Crichton has always been linked to a possible return to rugby union to play for the Wallabies at next year’s World Cup in France. He is still just 26.
Yet the cash-strapped rah-rahs probably wouldn’t have the funds available to match what he can earn in the NRL.
Crichton quit the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2018 to join the Roosters and become one of the highest paid forwards in the game.
No doubt rival NRL clubs will now reach out, knowing he’s not actually locked down at the Roosters.
He was up there. I’d have him without any hesitation. My only concern is his price tag. We’d have to let Friz go to get him or even be in the race.He was just about the best edge forward last year imo
after 'Junior" Pearced off early and Barny going , plus the amount of what should be minimum wage earners in the squad , if we dont have the money for Chrichton we've royally f**ked up our cap management ....againHe was up there. I’d have him with no any hesitation. My only concern is his price tag. We’d have to let Friz go to get him or even be in the race.
In Milford I can see it being a gamble but we need to start taking those gambles. If he shows interest in staying I say we keep him. He is still only 27.
I'd do EVERYTHING humanly possible to keep Milford, and that's without seeing him play a game in the red and blue.Re Milford. I thought he was under contract to the Dolphins

I'd take Keary in a heartbeatRumour has it the Roosters are trying to move on some players so they can go after Munster.
One player mentioned is Luke Keary. Now he's been way below his best since coming back from his ACL, and also has a history of getting knocked out (although it appears the year off has perhaps helped him there) but what are your thoughts on bringing him here? He's an instant upgrade and it was only 18 months ago where he was considered one of the best 5/8ths alongside Munster.
Couldn't even begin to think what sort of coin he'd command, but if Townsend got 750k from the Cowboys then surely Keary is asking for ~850k
Perhaps it is but what do you suggest the max is? I don't think he'd get 1m?Quality halves are at a premium so $850K would be minimum for Keary
I'd take Keary in a heartbeat
To be fair I think Keary is a better, more controlled talent and seems to be a better person.A half on the outer from the roosters….that’s exactly what this club needs!!…what could possibly go wrong!?!
Luke Keary is 30To be fair I think Keary is a better, more controlled talent and seems to be a better person.
Lot of qualities he has over Pearce.
He is 30 though, so we need to weigh up if we go down that path again. I think it's worth a 2-year deal until we can groom our next young halve?
