Well, in all fairness, that's kind of their job..

It's up to the NRL to look after the game as a whole.

For example, if a big name player goes on the market, big clubs don't pass on them to let the smaller clubs have a crack at them, they'd be fired if they did stuff like that, even though that would probably be best for the game.

If there were one single club dominating the comp they could almost be forgiven for this type of altruism. However there is actually a handful of powerful clubs, and they are in an arms race with each other (e.g. the Broncos haven't won for nearly a decade, so they are desperate). These big clubs aren't even really competing with a club like ours. If anything they resent us for inflating player prices.

Why would we? The best candidates don't want to have to pander to idiots and win their votes.
