So what would you say is a better approach to winning premierships? ... a top heavy roster and running the risk of a couple of injuries bringing your season undone ... OR ... a deep roster without real star power?

Im expecting you to backup your answer with some solid stats

History shows the best approach would be to run with two certain immortals, one being an absolute merkin, smug looking prick that’s passed more forward passes then anyone else in the game, and he absolutely scares the shit out of the referees. The other certain immortal would need to be a bogan inbreed, that doesn’t look like he’s hit puberty yet. Run those two with a genuine half back, a few solid players and several Nuffies, and hope for no injuries in the key positions.

The final touches to this formula would be to have these merkins, coached by a cross gender/Stephanie Graf/Martina Navratilova looking merkin, one That’s absolutely destroyed our game over the years.

That’s the best approach to winning premierships, @strider

So do you think there is a team that has come close to using this approach?

Don’t forget cheating for 5 years and to build up a roster so it’s easy to keep 3 champions who got overs in that time and we’re happy to take less to stay when cap compliment.

30 Maybe??

Still my point stands only the likes of Melbourne, Broncos and Roosters can continually stick pile young talent with star studded rosters.

But do the Roosters and Broncos actually do that? If you have a look at both of their current Top 30 squads, they'd struggle to come up with 20 genuine current players that could consistently play at the NRL level.

Perhaps if we ran around with a squad of only 20 genuine first graders instead of 27-28 we also might appear to have a stronger squad.

I think with 20+ legit first graders you’ll make the finals pretty handily. With only a dozen you're f**ked if injuries hit - look at the Chooks last year.

If the Roosters lose Cordner, JWH and Cronk (the same positions they did in 2016) for the first 8 weeks of 2018, the same thing that happened to them in 2016 would occur again. The Roosters will need to keep their Top 17 on the field for the majority of the year. It's also unlikely that they will have a recognised goal kicker on the field for much more than 40 minutes each week (Taukaihau) unless they play Reece Robinson on the wing, which will mean that he would be picked ahead of one of Tupou, Mitchell, Manu or Ferguson, which I don't see happening.

the Roosters entire squad would cost double if they played at most other clubs

there's probably not a player there on less than $500k

even their ball boys are on $100k

I wouldnt pay matterson, toupo,Ferguson, and half there forward pack 500k. Roosters are easy bait. Cowbpys squad looks more expensive to me.

One thing Pou youve left out in this approach which i feels important. That junior power....

Ideally you want your spine to be 7 or 8/10 in all positions. Throw in a good prop and 2nd rower. Hope for 3 or 4 good juniors who would be on unders for 2 years a couple of guys needing a chance on unders and then fill the rest with average nrl players.

Parra did well due to Gutherson,Brown playing better then what cost. Both played like 600k players.

This year we need too hope guys like T rex and Hayne do something simmilar. And maybe 2 juniors pop up and suprise.

To stay succesfull you meed to always be on the look out for guys who want a chance and maybe provide excellent value. Like Auvau. You must also be prepared to let juniors walk if get offered to much. Like Jnr and hope to replace them with the next junior that offers better value.

The key is always to keep a strong 1,6,7,9. For combinations especially. The first 10 weeks of the competition give you some easy points if you have cohesion early on.

And paying overs to keep a junior who doesnt offer better value at time is pointless.
Just like Twal or Aliaoi. Let them go unless they will provide some worth.

All team will struggle if get injuries to spine. But there are a few teams that if lose players in other position who can still perform at a high level while others will struggle big time.
Its a contact sport. Every team gets injuries. You want to hope at the eels its in positions we can cover.
The roosters will play a gambling game for mine. Odds are against them to have a strong top 17 by end of year.
I just dont see a balanced squad. I like ours better tbh.

Every forum you read guys overate juniors over your standard nrl players.

Guys like TAKA,KE,MANU are fine. They may not win you a premiership but wont cost you one. Swap them with a say Tohu Harris or even Josh Jackson. Not sure it would turn our side into a much better force all of a sudden.

I rate Tohu Harris, and I know Ma'u had a quiet 2017 - but I'd take Manu over him, tbh.

Ma'u has his deficiencies, but at his best, he is destructive (while also being defensively solid).

I never realised that Bellamy looked like Navaratilova but you are dead right!

I wonder if Bellamy is also a lesbian?
