Parramatta Eels 'dunces' for trying to sign Issac Luke

“They’ve got to start thinking about the future, not the quick fix.”
The Parramatta Eels have been labelled ‘dunces’ for reportedly pursuing veteran Warriors hooker Issac Luke.

Luke has a get-out clause in his contract allowing him to leave the New Zealand club if a bigger offer comes his way – and it appears last year’s wooden spooners are willing to oblige.
Reports this week indicate Parramatta are ready to pounce with a deal worth around $700,000 over two years.
But that would be a major mistake according to Sporting News league expert Peter Peters, who urged the Eels to instead place their faith in rising No.9 Reed Mahoney.
“Parramatta continue to be the dunces of the NRL on and off the field. If they shun the local junior (Mahoney) for the veteran Luke it will be another nail in their reputation,” Zorba told Sky Sports Radio.

“They didn’t have much to cheer about last year but they did unearth a bright young hooker in Mahoney.

“He’s tough, (has) good skills from dummy half and looks a real prospect but the club obviously don’t think he’s ready.

“Parramatta, it seems, have jumped in with $700,000 (for Luke) - I reckon that’s way over the top.

“The best days are behind Issac Luke.”

Peters believes luring Luke back to Australia would be a panic buy by under-fire Eels coach Brad Arthur.

Zorba said: “When you’ve got a coach under the pressure he’s under, these are the sort of decision that are made.

“They’ve got to start thinking about the future, not the quick fix.”

If that dumb fat f**k thinks it's a terrible idea, we should double the money and the contract length because Luke will be the greatest ever Eel....

I do wonder though, if Luke has a deal for 150K a year for 2019, why do we feel we need to offer him 350K a year?? I would have thought you wouldn't need to go much gigher than 225K to entice him, especially with 2 years on the table....

Because Newcastle established his market price before last year. They pulled out when he didn’t pass the medical. He has since had a shoulder opp IIRC.

I'd rather go for a stellar fullback, preferably one who can kick goals as well, and move Gutho back to the centres. It can't be helping Mahoney's confidence when the club is shopping his spot around a few weeks before the season opener.

Huh?

So because Newcastle were preparing to offer 300K+ a year for him a few months ago, we have to match that?? But it's OK for the Warriors to keep him on the books for 150K if he attracts no other offers??

Are you seriously suggesting our offer to him has been dictated by what the Knights offered?? Who told you this?? And if that is true, then we're even more stupid for bending over and making such allowances...

Maybe we might front load him this year seeing we prob have a stack of cash to spare due to Norman's release (and we may as well use it ) and then he's on lower next year when we actually have a a heap of spots to fill and money to burn for other players?

Nothing wrong with that idea but what stellar fullback is willing to come and at a club willing to release him?

Whatever the mechanics of the deal are, it's still a noodle scratcher trying to figure out why a bloke attracting no other offers (that we know of, especially 3 weeks out from season kick off) and whose current contract is apparently 150K with 1 season to run, is all of a sudden about to receive a 700K pay day.... Our negotiation skills sound like Kramer's in that episode of Seinfeld when he jumped in and accepted free coffee from the coffee chain just before they were about to offer a huge cash settlement!!!

"Mr Kramer, can we offer you a coffee?"
Kramer - "I'll take it!!!!

Mark O'Neill - "So Isaac, you're currently on a 1 year contract for 2019 worth 150K"
Isaac Luke - "Yeah that's right bro"
Mark O'Neill - "I see..... Would you be prepared to come to us for 700K for 2 years?"
Isaac Luke - "Are you high bro?"
Mark O'Neil - "Almost always Ivan"
Isaac Luke - "I'll take it!!!"

How is Valentine Holmes shaping up in the NFL?
That won’t be known for months yet, so unless he changes his life long dream in the mean time he isn’t an option. Also I would think the sharks would probably be able to block him from playing for another NRL team this season

I reckon we’d use the entirety of our remaining cap space to lower his cost for season 2. Heck I’d even give him the same get out clause

You reckon, if he doesn’t sign with us, that’d he stick around at Warriors for another $150k next year?

We’ve been through this. The criteria for a COE is that it be constructed so that it is shared with the community.

https://sport.nsw.gov.au/aboutus/OOS/SIG/CentresExcellenceProgram

The Souths COE for example is being built at Heffron Park and has to be shared with 10,000 screaming kids.

The Eels, like Penrith & Broncos will have their own COE at the Sale Yards which will be private and be used by all Eels grades exclusively.

How did the Raiders (an entity in another constituency) get $4 million out of NSW Government then?
