If he comes on at 65th he uses 1 interchange.
His role is to preserve Mahoney from burn out
So because we didn't have any injuries in the game we're relying on a lesser capable player to close out games? We'd be better off burning an interchange to get Mahoney back on.
Like said he cant cover an injury to 1-7.
And then back to requiring injuries to prove his value.

Head to head Smith is actually probably the better player but he's not that much better that with such a generic plan it'd make sense to have him over McIlwrick. On the balance of risk mitigation, you are stuck on the rare devastating scenario and ignoring much more common circumstantial performance.

It's like your mob with Katoa, Egan & Luai. Katoa & Egan are better hookers than Luai, but Luai is the better overall player. Injuries aside though Penrith will start Katoa, Egan on bench and Luai in reserves

huh? how come Kalyn Ponga isn't in all those positions? I thought he had been chosen as Dallym medal winner this year?

Sure there have been coaches that have carried odd players on bench e.g. Daniel Tupou, but do you honestly reckon we're in a position to do so? And who's saying anything about carrying 4 forwards (excluding hookers as proper forwards)? The current plan appears to be have Smith on bench in case a back gets injured and if none do then he can come on halfway through 2nd half to spell Mahoney in a position he's not very good at and doesn't utilise his "best" skills, at what is often a very critical time in the game. Can't bring him on for Mahoney earlier in case there is injury that will waste interchanges. If that's the plan, McIlwrick (as would have Kaysa) suits better in the common occurrence of no injury/resting Mahoney
But McIlwrick offers no injury cover. You can’t just manage risk based on what is likely (no injuries). You also need to consider the worst case scenario. That’s why Smith is currently in the team.

Maybe when Takairangi moves to the bench we’ll see McIlwrick replace Smith. But you need to cover every base, not just the one you’re fixated on this week.

I think you'll find that at least one good judge reckons that McIllwrick is a crack fullback.

I reckon we will see Salmon this week in replacement for Mennings, although I think Salmon will move to the right and Taka cover Mennings left centre spot. This allows for more experience on the left for Drown and Siva and gets Salmon into the right channel for his role for the rest of the year.

I thought Taka was defending well alongside Fergo, best I've seen him in years.

McIlwrick offers cover in the middle as a forward. We also have a few middles that can then switch to the edge if Lane or Marata are injured so effectively we have 9-13 covered by having McIlwrick on the bench.

Exactly. Tepai is a genuine edge option, so is Gower. McIlwrick spent a lot of time at lock both as a hunior and as a benchy. It's not ideal to shift a back rower into the centres, but we've fking named one there several times under BA so it's obviously a bandaid solution he is willing to use if needed.

You can shift Gutho or Taka or Salmon into the halves, Fergo to fullback or centre and push the edge one wider. Heaps of options as a stop-gap measure.

It's like some people don't realise you can cover an injury with someone in the starting squad...or that injuries are something you should be able to handle, but not something you weaken the squad to plan for.

Huh? Risk management is all about likelihoods! Otherwise they'd play the games in fallout shelters.
You can't cover every base with a finite number of players. What if both the halves go down in the 1st minute? You have to prioritise scenario impact WITH likelihood. And Smith coming on and f**king up a third of his tackles at hooker and providing garbage ruck service is highly likely compared to a player who has almost solely played at hooker AND the impact could be just as sharp as losing an uncovered for player. My cover for losing a player is Drown shifts wider in defence and probably Moeroa slots into his position while Lane covers in attack. If Drown gets injured, we're f**ked, the best edge forward defender takes his spot and the attack is covered by Moses/Gunco/Mahoney/Gower somehow

Those are the easy positions to cover (11/12 less so).

Though we found out on the weekend that Arthur’s trusts Drown to defend at centre so I guess we’re covered.

You can’t cover injuries from the starting team without sufficient versatility elsewhere in the squad. It’s why Robinson and Flanagan won premierships with a winger on the bench.
