Look injuries happen. Sure he could get injured again and we lose him for a while. But he is also the type of player that will work very hard to get back on the field. Yes I know he wasn't at his best last year after his comeback, but how much of that was his own form and how much of it was the lack of opportunities playing behind a team of wooden spoon calibre?
Look $650K is a lot of money, but it is also a very reasonable amount for a player like Guth and all that he brings. Hell we have Jennings on around $800K at the moment and we are still doing ok. My point is, it is his workload and not his speed that makes him the player he is, so I can't see him giving up that attitude and ethic even if he were to get injured again. So even if that were to happen, as long as the team is strong around him and not a spoon contender again, then his comeback from injury should not be like the last one, therefore worth the risk.
We need to sort this out quick. Even if we got him for 3 years at $650K instead of 4 years, how happy would that make him feel that the club that he will bleed for and lead for those next 3 years and he has hopefully grown to love, have played such hardball with him? These next 4 or 5 yeas are his best years now and he was hardly on huge bucks when he got here, so he needs to make sure that he can set himself up for the rest of his life right now. I don't think that he is being unreasonable at all.
The club would not be losing its power by giving him this deal. Gutho and Moses are the two players that are irreplaceable right now. As long as the deal is a reasonable one management should get it done. Stop being to cute before their player managers pull down your pants.
