Yeah I know nobody has signed anywhere yet, but this whole saga is a reminder of why I f**king hate this club, and I must of been a real prick in my past lifetime to be born a supporter of this merkin of a club. We are gong to be stuck with Princess Gutho and Jake Arthur and lose the players we actually needed to keep.

You hate this club because a couple of reporters write a few stories that were put out there by player agents? I know who the soft one is, and it ain't Gutho.

The stat paddler who is about to hold the club to ransom for the second time? Slowest FB in the comp who likes to beat up on bottom half teams but MIA in the big games? So happy we locked in the bush coach / Princess captain for another god knows how many years.

I would rather we blow the Raiders out of the water and offer Xavier Savage $500-600K and get him to break his contract with them and take over from Gutho in 2023. He will be a very dynamic fullback and the quickest in the league. Faster then Papenhuyzen even. At the very least he would make for a JAC type of winger and Russell can slot to fullback.

The fact that he didn’t re-sign before 1
Nov pisses me off. There is a part of me that wants him to leave. He is our captain and again acting like he is a future immortal.
The f**ker is not worth that much. He seriously overrates himself. Good player but no X FACTOR. He’s not worth more than 600k take it or leave it. Or as @TheRam said target savage. Kid is a freak.

Guth is massive Hog, for all his good qualities this is undeniable. The amount of Paul Gallen stats padding runs from dummy half is proof of this.

1.8 / game in 21, Papenalphabet = 1.9, CHN = 1.8, Rapana = 2.3 V.Holmes = 2.1, Manu 1.9

Less than 2 DH runs / game doesn't prove much at all for mine.

So @TheRam you may want to laugh, but here it is:

Parramatta are willing to upgrade his $200,000 contract to about $275,000 next year, but the Eels aren’t budging on their $425,000-a-season offer as part of a two-year extension for 2023 and 2024.

At Parramatta, he’s on a deal worth around $150,000 a season.

After taking a significant, six-figure pay cut from his last Warriors deal to sign for less than $200,000-a-year, Papali'i is the form back-rower of the NRL.

So we offered him $425k plus an upgrade for 2022 of at least $75k , so our offer is at least $462k assuming his contract was $200k for 2022. However reports suggest the SMH may have rounded that figure up a bit.

anyhow $462k is closer to $500k then $400k….

It's a psychological thing as much as a reality thing. This is why even now in the year 2021 we still hear and see ads with $XXX.99 being spruiked. Because it works. It lowers your perception of the actual amount that you are paying. Intellectually you know what the reality is, but it makes many feel better. The same thing is happening in reverse. $500K sounds mentally way better then $425k does in both his and his managers minds, who then can really exaggerate the insult to his client to ensure that his player goes to the open market for a right royal auction.

It is a small thing but a big and almost disrespectful thing. I guarantee you Paps himself would have taken it better if his manager had walked in and said they are offering you a $100K upgrade for next year and a 2 year extension on a total of $500K even.

It probably would still not been enough because they know that he can probably get a couple more hundred K elsewhere, but it would not have insulted the player and may have allowed further discussion without opting to go to the open market where now who knows what desperate offers he may field?

Rounding up figures always sound better and stronger when you are trying to make them sound big. It just is the way the human mind works and salesman negotiation 101 stuff really.

I'm feeling old... can hardly recognise many of these blokes anymore.

EELS’ GOLDEN OLDIES

Winners are grinners ... no matter how many years have passed.

Players from the mighty Parramatta Eels teams of the 1980s that won four premierships in six years, held their annual reunion over a liquid lunch — that soon became a liquid dinner — at Sofitel in Darling Harbour over the weekend.

Sadly, Ray Price, Paul Taylor, Peter Sterling and Chris ‘Howya’ Phelan couldn’t make it into Sydney because of the Covid restrictions, but we’re sure those in attendance had a beer or two for all of them.

I struggled
Great pace, great defence, great footwork, and a hell of a lot more space.
I would love him to produce all those things. I am yet to see it unless I am watchimg a different game. I will agree on the D, but not the rest.

We don't have any million dollar players but we have a f**kload of ones worth half a million. Probably more than any other club. It's why we have a good team, plus one benefit is that these players are easier to replace. Let's not pretend that Papali'i is Payne Haas or David Fifita. He might get as much as $700k somewhere but it will be at a club like Wests, not the Roosters or Souths. If we match big money for anyone it should be Mahoney, because he is harder to replace. But he's not impossible to replace, just like Bmith at the Storm.
You could make a very respectable case that Papali’i was better than David Fifita in 2021. It’s only a small sample size so it will be interesting to see if he can back it up.
The cowboys let Ponga walk because they didn’t want to overpay based on potential and look how that worked out for them. That’s why you need good judges of talent at the club and hope that they make the right call.
