If they care about public image they would also care about having a strong team, which won't happen if they match every rival offer for our players.
Time will tell if they made the right decisions. If we’d lost Paulo as well I think they would have copped it big time so I’m glad we were able to retain a quality player of his caliber. I personally think we dun goof’d by waiting for Papali’i’s value to skyrocket instead of extending him before the end of the season.

Neither of us knows when the club offered his extension and equally, we don't know how keen he was to test his value on the open market. The players all have experienced managers these days and they're not stupid. They understand that demand is what increases your price, so there's huge incentive to go to market.

Papali’i was on a bare minimum contract and there was no way to know whether he would continue to elevate his game to the level that he did. Do you think it’s more likely that he would have taken the upgrade to get off the minimum contract if we got in early or that he would have knocked it back and said No thanks I’m going to be an elite forward by the end of the season?

So if there was no way to know how good he would be how would we have come to an agreement on his value? This is why both parties should've waited.

From the point of view of an NRL club constrained by a salary cap there is zero risk in not (re-)signing a player. All of the risk lies in locking the club into a financial obligation to a player who might not provide value. It's only from the emotional perspective of the fan (and the journalist) that not signing/retaining somebody is an absolute negative outcome.

You got a source for that? I find it difficult to believe that he was on the NRL minimum salary ($115,000 ignoring the players at bottom of roster)

According to this an several other sources he signed for us for $150,000 p.a.:

He played more games for Canberra, Storm,Roosters and Wigan then at Parra. But telegrpah decide to link his name with the Eels.

It's funny I was having a conversation with a mate yesterday about exactly this.

He was asking me "why is it that Parra seem to be getting hammered by the media consistently?".

He reckons he has noticed over the last 6 months that it has gotten worse (although it has always been bad).

so they can only call him a former
- storm premiership winner (a fib - 54 games)
- a former eel (shortest time spent of all clubs - 51 games)
- a former rooster (uncle nick won't be happy - 95 games)
- a former raider (can't make sticky's mob look bad - 70 games)

clearly you'd pick him as a former eel

He may be a bit “lose” of the field as he likes to “party” but that doesn’t make him a shit human …..he is far from it actually……
And I actually give him some kudos for not signing up with some other club and going through the motions for 2 or 3 years...Even if he kinda did that with the Dragons in 2021 lol... But I'm sure he could've taken a deal somewhere either here or in the UK and earned at least 300-400K a year but has chosen not to.

What's there to gain with Rankin. He is bog average.
Arthur's son may never play NRL for long term. But at 18 he has potential. Give him atleast 2yrs. Maybe judge him in the 2024 season. The next 2 are pointless. Too young
