Hagan was an even worse signing, he was an absolute disaster. Kearney was shithouse but he took over one of the worst Eels squads ever.
Your right Hagan started the rot but Kearney was absolute puss.

I never forget his 2nd game here in 2011 on a wet friday night at Parra. After winning round 1 against a rubbish Penrith team.

We rock up and the play the most dour game i have ever seen. Penrith won 20-6 with barely breaking a sweat while we just did 5 hit-ups and a kick all night with no imagination.

It was like trying watching us trying to replicate Melbourne boring style of play at the time with 3/4 of spine consisting of Robson, Mortimer & Keating.

Not Slater, Inglis, Cronk & Smith it was ridiculous.

I had a bad feeling straight away Kearney didn't have a clue and was proven right pretty quickly.

Dont think so i think he just didnt want to be here.

He still lived up in newcastle when he coached at parra.

Driving up the old M1/pacific highway back in 2007/2008 every day would be torture in itself not like it is now.

No wonder he always looked tired in the press conferences.

Yeah I remember stories he would finished training sessions early to beat traffic

One of the funniest lines ever on LU was from Bigfella who sadly is no longer with us.

“ How do you get vertigo at the bottom of a ladder”.

Whenever Hages gets mentioned I think of that classic line. All the shit that happened after was a product of Fitzy signing Hages a year f**king early might I add which also destroyed our 2006 season. It was the catalyst for what happened to us. But at least we now have stability and good governance and stuff.

Yeah Fitzy signed a coach in December 2005 for 2007 who had just won a spoon at Newcastle.

I was 11 years old even i could tell Joey was running everything up there it certainly wasn't Hagan. They never won when Joey wasnt out there and when he was they won 70%-80% of there games.

Its quite funny many fans had some sort of belief BA could turn an average forward into a very good one after Papali'i.
But they forget about the duds.

Watmough
C.Nelson
F.Pritchard
K.Evans
Hipgrave
Murchie
Moimesea

Above was some guys who where not even cheap. All garbage.

Now let's look at the OK for cost.

Ogden
Doorey
Greig
Bryce
Davey
Valve
Matagi
Wicks
N.Brown

And the excellent considering value.

Papali'i
Hopgood
Lane
Marata

We can add these guys but we paid up for them. So hardly super signings.

Rcg
Scott ( Plodder for his last season )
Matterson ( Who we let go in first place )

So of 21 forwards 4 have been what I'd say excellent signings. I'd almost throw Wicks in. N.Brown I can't include as a great signing because we gave him a 550k extensions for 2022/2023. So any good work was offset by this. Over 1 million flushed down the toilet.

Now let's look at what kids he bought thru in the last 10yrs upfront.

Kafusi
Alvaro
Stone
Stefano

I won't count Pauli Pauli as he was already in the system.
So that's the forward stocks of our juniors. None with the club. All just average players bar Stefano who has upside.

How can anyone sit here and feel BA is some sort of master of getting value from cheap forwards. I've LAID OUT the stats. It's pathetic people feel he is some sort of master in this area. He isn't. Throw enough darts and some will hit.

I would settle for one that know how to identify quality. Then the kid will workout the rest.
You talk as if it’s a matter of looking at them play and seeing who the best ones are. It’s easy. So easy you can do it.

This is a quantitative problem, not a matter of good player/shit player. Just as (high demand, highly paid) recruitment guru Peter O’Sullivan is the best at telling the difference between a $700k player and an $800k player, so too are the best (and highest paid) junior scouts the ones most able to decide how much risk a talented youngster (who has never even played reserve grade) is at various price points: $200k, minimum salary, development contract, private school plus $20k signing fee, etc. The question isn’t whether a young player is ‘quality’ or not, it’s how much is too much or too little to pay him at a given price.

Other clubs’ lower grades are littered with Eels juniors who never amount to anything. This is a good sign, which is why your mates in the media don’t say a f**king word about it.

This analysis is worthless unless you compare it to the strike rate of other coaches.

I highly doubt Johnson would want to move to Sydney again having just gone back to NZ a year ago.

Maybe the tigers should just fool us all and re-sign brooksy again. You never know its year 12 next year he might finally graduate to a top level halfback.

Does anyone else bring up Brooksy as much on a Parra forum?

They were shit but Fitzy signing Hages started the rot, we sign a decent coach with the squad and pathways Smith had left and I have no doubt we wouldn’t of had the half decade of shit we had to go through and might even jagged a comp.
The thing is most coaches back then (and probably none of them today) weren’t able to run the football operation the way merkins like Smith and Gould did. Bellamy has had Ponissi since 2007 and the club surely had a GM before that.

Merkins criticising the coach for being unable to do more than his own job are barking up the wrong tree. Coaches are there to prepare the team and improve the full time players, not run the whole football club.

Maybe a sign that it’s not all about the coach, at any club? Sticky and Madge have also won premierships. So did Paul Green.
