Rumours and Stuff

If there isn't someone who steps up to ultimately replace Semi we should look to buy a class outside back like Whare or Simona. I think Gutherson will do well and we will save our money to further improve our forwards. We are set for 2017 and will give the comp one big shake.

I actually think we can win it and am willing to put $200 on it. Any idea what the best odds are at the moment?

I think we already have that class outside back in Clint Gutherson. I think he's as good (or soon will be) as Whare or Simona. I think it's a shame we have to experiment with him in the halves. We've needed a couple of classy centres for so many years it's not funny - and now we've got Jennings and Gutherson (with Takairangi in the mix, too) and we have to move one of them to make up for our lack of a five-eight. I think it's a shame (but, of course, I hope it works out).

Yes its something we would never do. Be desperate enough to pay overs that is.

I mean if any club has earned the right to have a sensible chuckle at another NRL club for reaching badly in a position of need, it is us. We have lived through those dark days and clawed our way back to a position where we can almost enter the player market looking at luxury signings.

Moses is pretty shit. Besides, I thought you were all about balance? We already have one reasonably big money half, Moses will not be asking Gutherson money. He'll be asking somewhere near Norman money, and he'll get it at a more desperate club. That's not particularly good balance, is it? Do we need two 600k+ halves? Or are we better to grab a 300-400k outside back, use the balance to re-sign Tepai and probably still hve enough for a 300-400k half should Gutherson and Fogarty fail...?

This assumes, of course, that we already have a plan for hooker. If not then obviously we should use Semi's money for that
Moses is better than shit, especially in attack, and a reasonably good goal kicker also. BA could probably improve his defence too. Have we forgotten about the Fog? Apparently been training well, not sure his standard at NRL yet, only BA can judge that, BUT goal kicks at over 90%. Also has a long kick on him, saw him do a 60m goal line drop kick.

Gutherson might not become the best half but he won't let you down. He is a class player but might not become a class half.
Until we look at our spine performers, French, Gutho and hooker I would be reluctant to part with my money just yet. The way we use our forwards is important too. We lack big forwards except Vave and Fritchard and how they are used is important. Look at a few games first before you make a decision with your hard earned.

I agree Gutherson is probably a shit hot centre ... but i honestly dont know if we can tell whether he can also be a very good half ... i'm definitely not writing him off cos he has shown alot more than anyone thought he could .... when he first switched to fullback last year he grew another leg, he was great ... then his time in the halves in a highly depleted team was fairly good too - give him more opportunity and who knows what he might be .... i think he was truely wasted and constrained on the wing ..... and he has an outstanding attitude - which is a massive part of becoming a better player .... i have high hopes for him

If we want a potentially cheap halfback we could look at former Wests player Jacob Miller. Very good attacking player who played for NSW in under 20's State Of Origin win.
He's spent past few of years playing in English Super League. Always been a poor defender but BA might be able to fix that. Probably wouldn't cost a fortune and might relish the chance to break into the NRL after playing a handful of games between 20011 - 13.

Having said that we have Dargan, Fogerty and Doolan coming through who might prove to be NRL players.

Don't know if its been mentioned, former Parra lower grader Alec Bush has signed with Cronulla feeder club Newtown.

Happy Australia Day groovers.

Who are we paying overs for??? Watmough was the last player I'd say we payed overs for. Foran was good value until Sharp and his Gonad crew f**ked up how contract and all his TPA's were counted on the cap. I'd say out squad is one of the best value for money in the comp this year.

I really wish we were training the Fog at dummy half, especially in defense. The guy has all the skills and vision to really be a great distributor, runner and kicker, that would put us on the front foot in games. But it's the extra work in defense that he may or may not struggle with and the psychology of playing there that he would need to get over.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm happy with De Gois where he is for this season, at least until about 3/4s the way through.

The risk is whether K Pricthard steps up his game (defence and attack) in time, so that he and De Gois can have 50-50 on field time during the final 6 rounds and semis - when I feel we'll need that type of fresh change at dummy half to get us through successfully.

If it all goes to plan, K Pritchard becomes the "majority" hooker in 2018, starting with De Gois providing solid relief off the bench. But if K Pritch doesn't up the ante, then we need a plan b for 2018 at hooker.

IMO the best backup wing option used in the last few years was Burrito however he was a tad slow for mine. At least he knew how to finish though.
And his mad go forward. He is actually an excellent attacking winger. It's his defence (vs the kick) that stops him being a first grader.

We might be paying overs for Jennings (after getting him super cheap last year) but I doubt we are paying too much for anyone else. Manu Ma'u maybe? We even got Norman for a steal, judging by reports.

De Gois and Kritchard are both contracted for 2018.

Well, my opinion might be unpopular as well - but I don't rate Pritchard at all. I'd be willing to bet he won't make it as a regular first grade hooker. I agree about DeGois, though. Very under-rated in my opinion.

Um...you must have better scouts than me Ram? How often have you seen him play?
