Well, he'll cost a total of $800k for the 2024 salary cap year across whoever is prepared to bear it. If he stayed at the Dragons and agreed to a pay cut this year in return for a release, he'd still be assessed at $800k for the current year, and that's how it should be. He won't cost us $800k on the cap even if we take over his whole salary because 5 months of the year has already passed and he has been paid in full by the Dragons. So the most we could cop would be 7/12 of $800k p.a.

They are saying because he had another 2 years we have to pay 800k for those years.

It's not true. If he agrees to a release with no payout then he will get nothing from the Dragons. His contract with the gaining club is a separate negotiation. However that negotiation might (or might not) be shaped by whatever payout the Dragons give him. If it's nothing then you might say he will want to be paid at least as much by his gaining club as he was on at the Dragons, which is possible. But the gaining club will want to get some value from him. They won't want to pay overs just because the Dragons agreed to it.

Who knows with the NRL it just whoever has more influence clearly our club and board have SFA influence or push with the NRL.

Israel Folau debcale in 2012 where he just wanted to join Parramatta but the NRL wouldn't approve it because the value of contract wasn't high enough. Was one of the most embarrassing decisions the game ever made yet we got punished for it.

Yet you can have Brisbane who can register TPJ for a packet of chips despite his big salary last year at the dogs.

Angus Chricton happily admits he took a paycut under value for the chooks on the cap.

Yet someone wants to play unders from his previous contract wants to join Parra all of sudden there needs to be an investigation into it.

DT article states the NRL may make him go on our cap for his dragons contract value even if we are not paying him that amount

Yeh, I think they've got that wrong (or some part of the situation is not accurately described). Maybe he is not actually being released unconditionally at end of 2024, in which case any new club would be taking over his existing deal (and then yeh, he would cost whatever his registered contract says.....and his old and new club would bargain over that). But this could just be journos adding 2 and 2 to get 5.

F**k Chinese meals. When we want you, you eat at Casa del Arthur !

—————————————
Parramatta coach Brad Arthur has upped the ante in his pursuit of Zac Lomax after hosting the St George Illawarra centre at his Hills District home on Wednesday night.
Sport Confidential understands that Eels skipper Clint Gurtherson may have also been in attendance as Parramatta stepped up their bid to sign Lomax for 2025 and beyond.

Lomax has been given permission to negotiate with rival clubs after the Dragons announced they had agreed to a termination of his contract at the end of the season, making him a free agent.

The Eels had already made their interest known, having contacted the Eels about a month ago to ask for permission to speak to Lomax.

Now that they have been given the green light by the Dragons, Arthur has wasted no time breaking bread with Lomax as he looks to get the jump on other interested parties.

Lomax is on a deal at the Dragons believed to be worth as much as $800,000 a season and any club that signs the 24-year-old may be forced to carry the full value in their salary cap.

Under NRL rules players who are contracted are unable to move clubs for less money. That means despite Lomax cutting ties with St George Illawarra - his rich contract could still be included in his new club’s salary cap even if he agrees to a deal worth less than his Dragons contract.

The difference generally remains in the new club’s salary cap. Clubs are able to write to the NRL to seek an exemption to the rule. It is rare though.

Yep, so if that description of the cap situation is correct he is not being granted an unconditional release at the end of 2024. He would not, in fact, be a free agent at that time, and if nobody signed him the Dragons would have cop the hit to the cap. If that is true, that is a fair representation of the default position. But, we are dealing with only half of necessary info.

Sound to me like more unnecessary rules and red tape by the NRL. His Dragons contract is null and void on Nov 1, so if no one signs him, he doesn’t get a dime, but the NRL now think because he HAD a $800k deal, that any club signing him should pay that because that his “cap value” as the dragon were willing to pay it.

Well, his contract with the Dragons may not actually be null and void on Nov 1. All we have is a series of articles saying that he will be granted a release at the end of the year. That's not the same as saying he will be granted an unconditional release (even if by mutual consent). They may simply be saying that they'll release him if they can come to terms over who eats his salary. If they just release him, the Dragons are potentially on the hook for his remaining salary as far as the cap goes.

The Dragons press release yesterday said his existing contract is terminated.

If that is true, and unless some deal has been done with the NRL, they're still on the hook for his salary value if he doesn't sign with anyone, so it is in their interest to make sure that he does. If they have done a deal with the NRL, then any future club will not be affected by his existing deal. I can't find a link to a full press release, just selected comments in articles.
