Rumours and Stuff

Whatever Gutho is getting now should be our offer plus CPI. 2 or 3 years seems reasonable. I cant see him getting any better or faster. I also would be surprised if another club offered him in excess of 700 to 750. He suits our team and I fear its more Gutho keeping players at Parra than Brthur.
Are the players happy to play under Arfur? From the headlines all the players are waiting for 1 Nov and putting themselves out to market. Come '23 our team could be hardly recognisable, seems every player is talking to other clubs to push their price up holding our club to ransom. Doesn't appear to happen to Storm and Roosters and one has to ask why.

Doesn't auger well for us come next year if happens as players will have minds on new clubs. If happens is Arfur dead coach walking?

I wonder how the NRLs forced stay in Qld has opened the eyes of many a player as to how nice a permanent move north may be. Id suggest families being located north during Covid as well may also be a factor. Happy wife, happy life. Now the Dolphins are looking for players. Its a perfect storm. The temptation may be great.

Isaiah Papali’i today rejected a 2 year extension ($425k a year) from the Eels. Informed club he is hitting open market Nov 1

Wests Tigers have signalled their intention to make offer up to $600K

Luciano Leilua’s manager asking Tigers for $700K+

————————————————————-

We’ve lost the plot.
Only $425k for the arguably our best player last year and NRL second rower of the year?

he’s worth at least $550-$600k and a 3 year deal.

if they f**k this up the next 4 weeks it closes our premiership window before the pre-season even starts

What happens if he goes back to being a non-factor on the field?

LOL!! Only you and Bea Arthur believe that, he hasn't gone anywhere yet or signed anything with anyone and Pou already talking him down. Classic Pou the super fan.
He's had one good season and suddenly he's the second coming of Gorden Tallis ffs. He might be great for the next decade but what if we pay him based on that and he turns out to be a one season wonder?

Did Stef come because of the cash, or coz you guys treated his brother poorly, in his view ?
Maybe a lil of both.
There's always a narrative to justify chasing more cash. Back when the Tigers paid big money for juniors the story was Parra didn't want Moses, when the reality was that Wests blew our offer out of the water. If we didn't want him we wouldn't have made an offer. Same story with Daniel Tupou to the Roosters. But players don't want to look greedy.

It's been reported on fox that Gutho wants around 900k for 3 or 4 years. How tf does he think he's worth anything near that. I'd rather take the risk of paying Manu around that

Clint Gutherson 2021 stats courtesy of parraeels.com.au

25 games
13 tries
18 goals are 72%
20 try assists
84 tackle breaks
14 line breaks
123 tackles made,19 missed ( 86.6% efficiency)
170m average per game

James Tedesco 2021 stats courtesy of Roosters.com.au

22 games
9 tries
5 goals at 38.5%
22 try assists
145 tackle breaks
17 line breaks
100 tackles made, 23 missed (81.3% efficiency)
182m per game

Honestly, aside from Teddy's freakish tackle-breaking, he isn't street's ahead of Gutherson, tbh.

I think $900,000 for a player of Gutherson's obvious quality is fair.

Whether it's the best decision for our squad is another matter.

That article you are referring to is a load of shit! It’s just a quote from Corey Parker saying Gutho isn’t worth $900k. No facts in it! Purely click bait!!

Anyhow appears the eels and Gutho have basically agreed on his worth just not the contract length:

Yeah you are right he’ll probably turn out shit, we should let him go. No big loss really.
I would be really annoyed if we ended up with a fringe finals side (or even worse a non finals side) while our fans sat around and bragged about how the team management is so smart because they let players walk and didn’t overpay anyone.

Can he defend in the middle for 80 minutes? I think not.

I'm sure he could, how much that'd effect his output and the quality of his game is probably the more important question.

But that aside, does he need to be playing 80 Mins to be in the top echelon of dummy halves?

I hope we keep everyone but with our current squad only really Matterson was recruited when in pretty decent form. The rest were either fringe players, players pushed out of their club or juniors we have developed.

The side was put together with smart recruitment. And the coaching team getting the best out of each player.

What ever happens with the re-signings, we still have $3-4 million to spend on our 2023 squad either with keeping what we have or bringing in new players.

We aren’t in that bad of a position. We don’t have anyone signed on stupid contracts and have the ability to sign new players if required. And BA and co has already shown they can get the best out of players.

There are plenty of options off contract.

Obviously we want to keep everyone and hopefully we do, but the situation isn’t as bad as the media is reporting.

I reckon our 2023 squad will still be very solid / finals standard no matter what.

The Storm lose a handful of top 17 players every year. They manage to keep their minds on the job.

I'd say their output per run is very different. Tedesco's tackle breaking is a significant difference as well. He is a much better attacking player.
