I'd be making a complaint to the integrity unit. He is contracted for 2 more years and cannot talk to another club.

Exactly - It's the manager sniffing out an extra 6.5% which he gets either via way of the player getting an upgrade or if released a new bigger contract.
Many of them (player managers) are vermin!

Agree, it's probably the manager probing for more coin.

If the money isn't available to upgrade him, be honest with him. If that's not good enough for him, tell him he'd better be prepared to win the Intrust Cup best player for the next two years.

Appraisal time at work (what a waste of time and effort) and got me thinking of Matterson.

Surely this is a case of:
1/2 season review, coach calls players in and tell them how they are going (CEO and/or Head of Operations sits in), in Matterson's case the discussion takes place with CEO as $$$'s are mentioned.
Coach: Excellent start to the season, happy with your effort and fact that you were called into origin squad as 18th man.
Coach: How do you see the team and you in particular going so far, yadda yadda yadda,
Coach: What we want to do is talk about an upgrade at seasons end.
CEO: Ryan, you know about the clubs cap constraints but we are working through them and at seasons end we will speak again about an upgrade, at the moment it is in the range of x to x. We hope you are happy with that and more importantly that you are happy with us and what we are trying to build here at the club.

Simple stuff, don't offer the earth but the warm and fuzzy stuff and just between the club and the player. No f**ken player managers allowed.

Its a start a hopefully these younger players feel good about it. If not, well, play tough.

Sporting life are saying the Matto thing is nothing to do with money...apparently Madge pressured him to play injured when he thought he needed time off. So now he wants out. I guess the clubs who are willing to offer him plenty more have nothing to do with his call.

Get ready for the duty of care card and if that fails it will be the mental health card. One thing he will get a release...they always do

He is coming across as a first class sook when we all know that this is about money. Make him stay. Tell him we can work through any issues but money will not be discussed until hen is ready to talk about extending his time with the greatest club in the world.

This version at least seems to key into his complaint of " this isn't what i signed up for" and seeing the sports psychologist

So I was doing some googling around the topic and I came across weststigersforum.com.au (is this the offical tigers forum??) and a poster over there found an article that reckons it has nothing to do with money but everything to do with Maguire forcing Matterson to play injured on multiple occasions this year.

I can't see this. We can't replace Matterson with Capewell. We can sign up Capewell and have a better backrow but Capewell isn't at Matterson's level. Why would we go backwards.

My assumption is the club (hopefully Madge) sits down with Matterson and asks him what is wrong and sorts it out. That is typically the way you resolve issues.

I also think that Matterson and his manager are playing games with us and that pisses me off.

Very hard to back flip once your dug your heels in. Hard to see this having a happy ending...at least for us.
So like Clearygate we have to make the most of a crappy situation. The main thing the club stays solid behind Madge

Playing injured? Cmon....
Maybe we need a billy johnson type trainer. I remember when he was at the cowboys, he used to make the injured players do 300km bike rides and shit like that. Cut the malingering right down, players couldnt come back quick enough.
