Appraisal time at work (what a waste of time and effort) and got me thinking of Matterson.
Surely this is a case of:
1/2 season review, coach calls players in and tell them how they are going (CEO and/or Head of Operations sits in), in Matterson's case the discussion takes place with CEO as $$$'s are mentioned.
Coach: Excellent start to the season, happy with your effort and fact that you were called into origin squad as 18th man.
Coach: How do you see the team and you in particular going so far, yadda yadda yadda,
Coach: What we want to do is talk about an upgrade at seasons end.
CEO: Ryan, you know about the clubs cap constraints but we are working through them and at seasons end we will speak again about an upgrade, at the moment it is in the range of x to x. We hope you are happy with that and more importantly that you are happy with us and what we are trying to build here at the club.
Simple stuff, don't offer the earth but the warm and fuzzy stuff and just between the club and the player. No f**ken player managers allowed.
Its a start a hopefully these younger players feel good about it. If not, well, play tough.
