After Tinkler pulled the plug the juniors were left all at sea. The club only just started investing in them properly back in 2019, getting in the right staff and systems. Have a look at how well our Ball and Flegg teams are going this year to see how its all starting to bare fruit. Unfortunately we are a few years away from it having an effect on our Cup and 1st grade teams so in the meantime we need to either squeeze the most out of the guys that are here or import others
The same thing happened at the Bulldogs when Des was around. Investments into juniors were forgotten, and you eventually pay the price. We have been rebuilding those, and Gus has been brought in to fix that even further. But no matter what you do, you need to have an environment at the club that's moderately successful so you can bring them into a no pressure situation. Play them off the bench to give them a taste, move them back to reserve grade to work on areas that were exposed. A good example in Thurston and Barba, both had the same upbringing in that the Bulldogs slowly brought them into grade over a 3 yr period. So once they nailed there spots, they were able to excel.
It's very rare that you get that Andrew Johns or Brad Fittler type player who just steps up from the start. And you shouldn't expect it either. If that happens it's a bonus.
So although I believe we have talent that in 2yrs will really bolster the club, Dogs need to start winning games or else their confidence will be crushed, and the first sign on an exit plan via a more successful club offering them some money will see them depart. Newcastle is in the same boat.
