I would not be surprised if our next coach is someone we never even considered a realistic target. Parr would have that sort of reach. The money Gardner is out laying demands respect and more importantly success. Of course Parr may be patient with O’Brien first.
Bellemy? Robinson?

I believe we may have a real crack at Todd Payten. Parr has massive belief in him as a coach.
I give that such a low chance of happening, not within the next 3 years anyway.

Payten has already stamped his mark up there and he'd be mad to give it away so soon after what he's created.

Payten was brought in after Parr had been moved into a board role, so he probably had minimal involvement if any. The "available" coaches that Parr has a connection to would be Paul Green, Josh Hannay & maybe Neil Henry if he's still even trying to coach. Brad Fittler too if you want to count Origin.

HARD pass on Fittler and on the fence re Green but I'm not sure he would be what we need.

I know our experience with O'Brien has probably tainted the idea of another unproven coach for many but I have a very high opinion of Josh Hannay based on all I've seen/heard from and about him so far.

If I was considering those options, a hybrid model of Neil Henry and Josh Hannay would be something I could see working well for us if that package could be pulled together. My expectation would be to have Henry as the hard nosed coach to clean out the place with Hannay as an assistant, with the intent for him to step up to the head role after a few years of Henry and his experience sorting out the cultural issues.

It has a similar feel to the Sheens/Marshall strategy for the Tigers that could work here.

What do others think?

Why not? Any particular reason?
Green : Critical of Ponga which many believe helped expediate his exit from NQ. Not saying he was wrong. But no one would dare rock the boat after the fiasco this year.

Hannay: Good assistant. Not a head coach IMO.

Henry : Stagnates quickly after strong starts. We need sustained success. He is a good coach.

In their own right all have good qualities. My view though is our next coaching appointment will need to be perfect. We should be going all guns blazing for the right man. I will not pretend to know who that is. Parr hopefully has the answer. His biggest challenge is selling our failures as past and not future.

It's nice to say this but there's no such thing. That will only become known 3-5-10 years down the track.

AOB sounded like the perfect option at the time.

Parr will be fully aware that success will need to be a reality sooner rather than later.

I forgot about the Green/Ponga relationship tbh. Yeah that’s not happening haha.

Another guy I’d be willing to consider is John Morris. Did a solid job at the sharks under really trying circumstances after Flanagan got the boot and he was unlucky to be sacked, seems like the club never really backed him. He also did a lot of work with their younger players and brought through a lot of the guys who are now regular first graders. I know he’s not the most experienced guy around but he’s got a couple of years of head coaching experience under his belt already so he isn’t a rookie either.

I’m unsure on Morris. Would’ve loved to have landed him as assistant when he got the boot because I think that may be where he’s best. No doubting the the role in the guys he brought up at the Sharks. The fact Fitzgibbon has got them to another level is also telling though.

Hynes and Finnucane might have helped Fitzgibbon’s plight somewhat.

For sure. As @Mr_Knightside said as well, Morris did well in a season full of distraction for them.

Just Fitzgibbon appears to be getting the best out of the team he has and it is a fair team. They've got a good 17 there that can match it with anyone on their day.

I agree with that, Fitz is a gun. But I think Morris has plenty to offer also.

Haha never a good sign but I do believe him.

Only way AOB goes this year is if the players really throw away games.
