Aren't 3rd party deals a maximum of $30k?

Don't they have to have no contact / official sponsorship with the club the player represents, effectively a silent sponsor.

Are 15-20 business' prepared to do that?

Very fishy!

No limits on third party, and easy enough for blokes like politis and crowe to line up mates who will say they have 'nithing to do with the club. The thoroughbreds are apparently a third party lol
I remember an article mentioning some teams were working with a $10mil roster with third party deals taken into account.

Releasing Grant and McQueen to sign Sam Burgess for over 1m would be like us releasing Isaac Liu and Mitchell Aubusson to sign Jarryd Hayne.

Ridiculous.

Along with Luke and Stewart who would free up a bit of space.

Just depends who else they sign.

So he's not on 1.5 million then.

Probably about 1million with third party deals.

It was said he was on around 650k when he was with Souths in 2014 so the NRL wouldn't alter his value by that much one season later. James Graham is on 700k Andrew Fifita on 650k. You would think the NRL will have him in the same price bracket which means Souths can top the rest off with third party. With Stewart supposedly on around 600k and Issac Luke gone Souths should only really need to let one other player go.

Taupau has been reported as signing anywhere from $600-$700kpa with manly. Taupau is certainly quality but he isn't in Burgess's league. If the $500k on the salary cap is true it's a sure sign we're going to see a souths red carpet ride ala 2014 all over again. They've already signaled their intention by putting MCGuire on the rules committee.

The NRL is allowing us to sign him for the same money he was on in 2014. That's fair. He'll be on about 600k under the cap.

So only a NRL sanctioned advantage of 500k over every other club then. No big deal.

Teams with smart administration all do this.

No limit on third party payments.

You seem a little bit bitter.

It's all within the rules.

Sam may get 400k third party deals. We just don't know.

You're talking about notional value. Why should Sam's notional value be significantly more than when he left only a year ago? If Souths can get the salary increases for Sam through third party then that is perfectly within the rules

Don't get too excited Souths fans, originally he signed with Souths for four years and left after two. He then signed with Bath for three and left after one year. He has now signed with Souths again for three years. Watch out for Collingwood.

It's cute how people think that Souths are the only team using TPA's.

Like we have an advantage over every other team.

We don't have anywhere near the number of TPA's that some of the other clubs have. Look at the Roosters for example... Hasn't anyone ever wondered why City Ford (Nick Politis') company is no longer a major sponsor of his club?

I'll give you a hint... Any major sponsor of an NRL club who's logo or branding appears on game day merchandise or the official club website, can't be a third party sponsor to individual players. Third party player sponsors can't be sponsors of the club.

So the Roosters own chairman runs a very successful business that for all intents and purposes and in the NRL's eyes, is not associated with the Roosters at all and is thereby eligible to pay players as a third party sponsor...

All seems legit to me.

Yes, I probably am bitter that the integrity of the comp has been thrown out the window over the last 5 years. I am unlucky to follow a club that can never have a "smart administration" under the current system.

Whatever stupid amount manly paid for Taupau has zero to do with it.

I can't see how putting him down for whatever was on previously isn't the most fair way.

I do not blame other club supporters thinking $500k for Sam as his CAP calc is unfair to other club cap management. I think the CAP should be done away with all together , however that is another discussion.

Re Sam 's $500k for Cap purposes , i can see a logic there. Souths let him out of a long contract to follow his RU World cup dream. If Souths had played hardball , he would still be playing for Souths in 2016/2017 under the old contract. Souths let him out of that contract , he is gone 1 year , comes back and in order to get him back from RU and English NRL they have to pay a lot more. The NRL does not help with the funding of Sam , however allows his CAP value to remain at the prior contract. Some King Soloman
wisdom there by NRL.
