We’ve missed the marquees, half of them we didn’t even have a full tilt at.
Juniors are our only way out of this and that means years of pain ahead.
I think go for the solid players a level below the marquees? Those who want to play, e.g. Josh Jackson types?

Currently we have players like Laurie and Doueihi who are realistically just solid 1st graders at this stage but are made out in the media to be brilliant , even Moses Imbo got an origin jersey .

I was saying something similar to a friend...Douehi and Laurie stand out for us but in truth their intensity and commitment when they're at their best ( putting talent aside for a second) is typical of what's expected at the Storm 1 -17 week in week out.

With the NSWRL competitions now abandone, we had been doing very well in KOE cup - 3rd and Jersey Fleg - 1st, can’t find results for other comps, but not a bad result.

What is crazy is if we won our two games against the Warriors (both of which we had won and shat the bed) we would be in the 8. Throw in the Tommy tribute games (cows and tits) abd we are pushing the top 6.

yep, makes me hate this team even more. Even just 1 of those 4 wins and we likely make the 8

I have us losing narrowly to Sharks, flogged by Penrith and then probably annihilating the dogs.
Missing the finals is the deserved outcome for this squad of players and their tragic efforts in a lot of winnable games this season.

Definitely some tragic efforts this year. The ones that come to mind are both Warriors matches, the first game against the Cowboys where the boys were rightly booed off the field at half time and golden point loss to Souths. These were all winnable and if the boys had gone on with it like they should have, they would have been firmly ensconced in the Top 8 right now. That would have meant we wouldn't be going through the same charade we go through ever year, where we try and figure out what miracle would have to occur to get us in the Top 8 and delude ourselves for a few weeks that this miracle might be possible.

Though IMO it's better to be able to hope for a miracle than be in the Dogs position?

It's kinda sad that the only thing we have to console ourselves with is the fact that we avoided the spoon for another year. Judging from their roster and who they have signed, I reckon the Dogs might be more likely to make the 8 next year than us.

I reckon he'll be gone if he don't?

From Fox NRL

Tigers coach Michael Maguire has opened up on the two positions he feels the Tigers need to strengthen to return them to finals contenders.

The Tigers currently sit 13th with their slim finals hopes on thin ice and Maguire wants to strengthen the front row and outside backs while bringing in or producing a representative player to take his side to the next level.

“I’d like another big front-rower,” Maguire told SEN 1170s Drive with Joel and Fletch.

“That’s always something you’re looking for, a strong guy at the front.

“One thing I am looking for is the player that can take themselves from an NRL player, to the Origin arena through to an International.

“The reason I say that is because you need those players in finals series and Grand Finals.

“The more you spend playing at that level, the more comfortable you are.

“There’s a reason they’re the best players in the competition and they’re the ones that win you the comp.

“It’s finding those types of players now in and amongst the group now, is it a Daine Laurie or a Shawn Blore? We’ve got a lot of good young players coming through.”

Maguire also admitted the club would like to eventually add a strike weapon in the backline, when the right target emerges on the open market.

“When the times right, we’d like to find a strike weapon that may become available,” Maguire said.

“But one thing at the moment, there’s not many around, so you’ve got to be disciplined to hold on until the right one comes around.”

Take a second to process this little nugget of information.

Competition heavyweights Melbourne celebrated a record-equalling 19th consecutive win on Thursday night.

On Saturday afternoon, Wests Tigers are chasing just a third win in a row. They have failed to do so since the start of the 2018 season.
The Tigers’ season goes on the line - again - in Rockhampton against Cronulla.

Should they crash to defeat, it will almost certainly consign them to a 10th straight year without finals football. Win and their finals hope may still rest on beating Penrith and former coach Ivan Cleary the following week.
No club in the NRL era has gone so long without a September cameo.
Parramatta and Souths both went seven seasons without finals football.
The Panthers went 18 seasons without a post-season when they first entered the competition in 1967.

So now one question is being asked by some at Tiger Town: should the club forget about finals altogether and pour their energy into giving the club’s Generation Next all the time they need?

Does any fan reading this seriously think the Tigers can knock off the Sydney Roosters or Manly in week one of the finals?

The Tigers have always gone big. At the start of 2015 during a swanky members’ breakfast, the club released a glossy strategic plan, which included becoming a top-four force by 2017. Didn’t that go well.

Liam Fulton featured in a few finals series with the Tigers, including 2011, and said the club should put the post-season on the backburner.

He loves coach Michael Maguire and his passion, and is convinced Adam Doueihi is the club’s next captain, but also wants to see investment for the long term, not panic buying for the sake of prolonging Mad Monday by a week.
“I think we should strip it right back and worry about our juniors, keeping the good ones and developing them,” Fulton said.

“We don’t have the roster to win the comp the next couple of years. We shouldn’t be stressing about finals football. Who cares if it takes another couple of years.
“If we get it right, we can not only play finals football but keep playing finals football.”

Tommy Talau, Shawn Blore, Daine Laurie, Stefano Utoikamanu and Tuki Simpkins, among others, are going to be better with time. Doueihi is a future skipper, while the club is in the hunt for a quality front-rower - Canterbury’s Luke Thompson has already been discussed - along with an outside back.

They have four spots to fill for next year, and money, but will not pay overs for talent, even when rivals are prepared to offer less.

The club has a $71m Centre of Excellent being built in Concord. And premiership coach Tim Sheens is about to return home in October and make sure all rivals, including Canterbury and their general manager, keep their paws off the giant junior base in the south-western Sydney corridor.

Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe spent time working at the Panthers, but was happy to declare his club’s junior base would overtake Penrith’s in good time.

Pascoe says every year the Tigers do not play finals football it is a “fail”.

“But it is only a concern if we’re not progressing and developing, which we are,” Pascoe said.

Skipper James Tamou played in a grand final with Penrith and then lobbed for pre-season training at the Tigers before Christmas. The thing that stood out for him most was “the standards at training”.

There was talk within two weeks of him being at the Tigers he wanted to shuffle his way back down the M4. He quickly denied that was the case.

And this year I’ve learnt more about myself, I’ve learnt how to be a better human and leader,” Tamou said on Friday.

“There are so many good signs for the future here. We’re almost there.”

He has seen the development. One of the proudest moments for him this year was sitting in the sheds after a 66-16 flogging against the Storm, then seeing young prop Utoikamanu and Thomas Mikaele feel comfortable enough to speak their minds.

If Melbourne are well drilled and Penrith entertaining to watch, Tamou said the Tigers prided themselves on being adaptable and “loving a scrap”.

Finals or no finals, there could be a lot to love about the Tigers in the coming years.

f**ken wank, wank, wank….
Heard it all before.
There has only been 4 times this year that I was happy with how we played.
Rd6 v Souths - courageous loss, went down swinging
Rd10 v Knights - comprehensive win
Rd12 v Saints - comprehensive win
Rd13 v Penrith - great win under pressure and expectation

Sure we’ve had some other wins but they were all scrappy as hell with the better side not determined other than on the scoreboard.

I've been pro Madge all year until last weekend which broke the bubble for me. Even in the past 10 years where we have missed the finals this side has still shown effort and fight. This year there are players who just are not putting in. So that means Madge can't get the best out of certain players. That means really he is an average coach. At Souths he had a lot of stars for an NRL team.

Take nofo. He went from one of the best years to being average. The fact the senior players are our worst consistantly means his style of coaching doesn't work. I've heard the Bellemey you see in the box is different at training and he can't be more like Bennett where he is like a father figure.

In the past when we concede 40+ points it's at the end of games. This year the damage is done when the team is at its least tired. Then what pisses me off is we have scored a lot of points late in games which tells me we are oddly a fit team and our poor first halves are just effort areas where players are hoping the guy next to them makes the effort. I think now Madge isn't the answer but Brooks, Nofo, Tamou, Roberts, BJ, MBye are not the answer either. These guys have played enough to at least know the effort that is required. The effort is coming from those who have only played less then 20 games and are still raw.
