Shannon McDonnell determined to make the most of opportunity
BY ROBERT DILLON

MID-season signing Shannon McDonnell admits he will effectively be playing for his career in Newcastle's crucial clash with Canberra Raiders at EnergyAustralia Stadium tomorrow night.

McDonnell, who joined the Knights two months ago after requesting a release from Wests Tigers, will fill in as fullback against the Raiders in the absence of skipper Kurt Gidley, who is unavailable because of NSW Origin commitments.

It will be the 21-year-old's fourth game since linking with Newcastle and he realises subsequent chances might be few and far between unless he creates a big impression.

Adding to the pressure is the knowledge that he has nothing definite lined up yet when his contract with Newcastle expires at season's end.

"It's like window shopping I need to be in the window for people to see me," McDonnell said yesterday.

McDonnell's preference is to stay with the Knights next season, but that prospect appears unlikely because of salary cap constraints and the likelihood that Gidley's presence would restrict his opportunities.

He possesses an English passport but said he would rather continue his NRL career, which kicked off as an 18-year-old in 2005.

"It's hard just getting that shot, because there are so many senior fullbacks who have cemented their spots," he said. "It's just a matter of getting a chance to do that myself.

"I don't really want to go overseas yet. I still think I've got something to prove here."

McDonnell said he had not yet asked his manager to start contacting rival clubs because "I wanted to get a few games under my belt and take it from there".

The diminutive speedster showed his versatility last week by playing on the wing against Melbourne, but Newcastle have the bye after they meet Canberra and could have James McManus and possibly Cooper Vuna available for their following game, against Manly.

Competition will be hot for positions in Newcastle's backline but McDonnell is determined to remain focused on the job at hand.

"I look forward to these games and I'll be trying to make the most of them," McDonnell said. "It's good getting back-to-back games.

"It helps me feel like part of the team and I feel like it's good for my consistency. The more games you play, the more comfortable you feel, and the better you get to know the boys."

Meanwhile, Knights coach Brian Smith gave his three most reliable workhorses a break from training yesterday in an attempt to freshen them up for tomorrow's clash with the in-form Raiders, who have beaten Melbourne and Gold Coast in their past two outings.

Forwards Isaac de Gois, Chris Houston and Matt Hilder were all excused from yesterday's ball-work session after marathon defensive efforts in last week's loss to Melbourne.

lol McDonnell

If anyone sees him while they're out and about, feel free to smack him in the knee with a tyre iron.

He's much better injured and off the field then he'll ever be while on it.

I wanna LOL at McDonnell too, but everyone here will just claim I want to see him fail and that I'm not a good 'fan' when that's not really accurate.

To be fair, he has been OK so far with the Knights, which is a tenfold improvement from when he was playing for the TIGERS.

Its only a matter of time until an implosion though I am sure. I just hope it's not Saturday. His last implosion against the Warriors he got away with because The Beast Manu has cement hands.

I think he has done what has been asked of him really and aside from I bad blunder has contributed positivley to the team.

I'm a bit pissed that Uate isn't going to get a chance to show what he can do at fullback, because he thrives with a chance to join that attack when he wants to.

After his game last week i reckon he is ready to kill it at fullback.

I'm sure he'd be dazzling. But there are off-the-ball responsibilities of a fullback, directing the team in defence and so forth, that I doubt he could fulfill at NRL level.

Roopy, IMO we shouldn't mess with Uate this season, let him get into his groove in the wing position.

He's coming really good the last few weeks, especially his involvement.

Not the sort of player we should be throwing around the place, let him stay at wing and get that down 100%.

He still not handling all the responsibilities required of him as a winger.

How on Earth would we expect him to handle fullback?

There is more to wing than a strong kick return and blistering pace in the clear.

The role of fullback has a thousand more responsibilities......

If I had a dollar for everytime he has been told at training, at half time, even during the game to give Kurt the outside option he needs on his long kick returns, I would be rich.

Getting better each game and has the makings of a star, but right now, he would handle fullback as well as Serc would a run in the front row instead of Faas.

If the coach is smart, he wouldn't Shannon Mac to do very much at all. In fact I'd say to him :

"Shannon, for the love of God, whatever you do, don't touch the football, don't ask for the football, and if someone has made a break and there's nothing but open space ahead for you, please, make yourself unavailable. Also, don't try to kick the football."

Uate is a natural fullback.
He is better at fullback than wing - easily.

He may well be in the future.

But right now, he is still getting his head around what is required of him on the wing. He is failing in the most simple things.

If being a fullback was only defusing bombs and making solid kick returns, he would be fine.

Strange as it might seem, the fullbacks role is far more than this, and far more complicated than that of the wing position.

If Aku is currently only doing the very basics of what he is currently required to do as a winger, how anyone could even consider him as an NRL fullback is beyond me.

Why thankyou for the comparison :p I agree, I don't think Luke Walsh circa 2007 would've done too well in the front row either!

And while I am interested in entertaining the thought of seeing how he would go in attack (note: attack only), I don't think it should happen roops I'm afraid :) But unlike some of the other wacky ideas pasted on any forum from time to time, yours at least seem to have some reasonable period of observation and thought put into them even though they are very much from left field!

Edit: And back on topic, hope he has another decent-good or even a quality game this week! Given the coin he would be on (which almost gaurantees a risk free buy), I've been pretty happy with what I've seen from him so far.

Edit 2: lol and looking below I also hope he has a screamer for Karma and the Tigers supporters sake :p

Sounds like sound advice for him I reckon.

People are putting too much sh*t into Uate's head - and let's face it - there isn't a lot of room in there.
If you put him in a 1 jersey and told him to do what comes naturally he would do a lot more right than wrong - and if you told him a million things to do he would run around like a chook with it's head cut off.
