I can't believe I'm agreeing with you.

He needs to be stood down until it at least goes to court IMO.

Yep, needs to be stood down. Lets wait to the court case but if the Roosters are fair dinkum they are standing him down until it goes to court. Then if he is guilty he is stood down for 12 months backdated till now.

Court proceedings could take 9 months. Why should he miss 9 months if he is ultimately found not guilty?
Exactly.

If he's found not guilty and he's had to miss 9 months of footy then that is grossly unfair.

Anyone can make an accusation. But until someone is found GUILTY then they should be able to go about their lives as normal for charges such as this. Obviously for more extreme charges like murder it is different.

If Auvua got 12 months, then SKD if guilty should get the same. Stood down until the court proceedings too

Bullshit. He wasn't stood down on Sunday and he shouldn't have been. He intends to fight the charges and if he is able to prepare sufficiently to perform his duties as an NRL player, he should be free to do so. If he's unable to do so, then he'll pull out on his own volition as he did on Sunday.

No one learned from the Brett Stewart situation? Regardless of what you think, or whom you support, he was suspended 5 weeks (or whatever it was) and had his reputation run through the mud for what eventuated in a non-guilty verdict. And the NRL/Gallop gave the bullshit guise of a suspension for being drunk at an official function.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun in condemning but when I read the report that it was a number of incidents, spread over a period of time and the Police had a number of incriminating text messages for harassment I guess I saw red

Has the club actually made a statement as to their belief around his guilt or innocence?

If he is innocent and loudly claiming so, then usually a statement is made straight away that the whole thing is slander

I haven't seen anything along those lines - just that he wasn't mentally right to play at the moment

If he says he is completely innocent and says he wants to fight the charges, then I would support his playing until the outcome of the court case (if one eventuates) is known. Otherwise, he would need to step down.

I spoke to a cop that said that there is an unwritten rule amongst police officers that charges are not laid against women who make false allegations of domestic violence to police because it could deter women from making true allegations. When family law proceedings are happening (parenting or property), some solicitors coach women to make allegations in order to sway results of family law proceedings, knowing that there almost never negative repercussions for doing so.

I'm not saying that is what is happening in this case but it does make me a bit more cynical until findings of fact are actually handed down.

Auva'a pleaded guilty and was allowed to play on so thats a big difference

Any application to return to the game will not be considered until he has demonstrated behavioural change designed to prevent the recurrence of violent behaviour toward women.
Auva'a will be required to complete a secondary prevention counselling program adapted to his particular needs and covering issues including violence against women, alcohol abuse and anger management.
The NRL will not consider an application from Auva'a to have his suspension lifted for at least nine months. His suitability to return to the game will be determined by an NRL panel which will rigorously review his progress.
The suspension means Auva'a will miss the World Club Series, the Auckland Nines and at least 22 rounds of the 2015 Telstra Premiership.
The penalty follows an incident in January which resulted in Auva'a pleading guilty to charges of recklessly causing injury.

Not saying the guy is guilty and legal system must run its course, therefore within reason he should bbe allowed to play until the matter is resolved.

But if he is found guilty and given the polticial sensitivity around domestic violence (royal commission etc), I think given he is a fairly high profile footballer he will get time, than deported back to NZ, passport stamped no return to Oz.
He might have dual citizenship... He was born in Australia wasn't he??

This comment is despicable and outs you as a sexist as well as a racist scumbag. What sort of low-life leaps to the defense of an alleged woman-beater because his girlfriend happens to be Aboriginal?
The only one that brought up race in that context was you.

He is innocent until a court finds him guilty. However, given his high profile as an NRL player and the image the code and his employer, the Roosters, wish to put forward, the latter are under no compunction to select him to play. The Roosters beat a pretty decent side by 24 points yesterday, so its not like they desperately need him.

If he's found not guilty, the club would be bound to pay him his normal contract moneys. So it's not a case of an innocent player losing financially anyway.

The maximum penalty for Assault Causing Actual Body Harm is 5 years imprisonment, or 2 years if dealt with in a Local Court. He's also been charged with Common Assault, 10 charges in all. The complainant has standing and it would seem the case against him is reasonably strong. I doubt he'll do time but with the current campaign against domestic violence (and rightly so) it couldn't have come at a worse time. I suspect the Roosters and the NRL will wipe him like a snotty nose if he's found guilty.

An interesting article;

I felt the same way, it's just an uncomfortable look for the roosters and the game for him to play, but we can't prejudge him, and legally the clubs have to be careful not to open themselves up to future litigation by a player who may be innocent and believe his case & reputation was prejudiced or damaged by the clubs action to suspend him.

As does the NRL.

Yup, Jessica Peris has form and knows how the system works.

Had to laugh at the judge commending the ex-bf in that case for not striking back while he was being assaulted by her with an electrical board, but then chiding him for taking the electrical board off her and throwing it at the wall because that made her "scared and intimidated."

could also be a vexastious frivolous complaint too and based on money too since they split and she would be entiltled to some sort of payment from the relationship.

NRL are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Cant be seen to be condoning violence to women, have to be fair to players. I guess consistency is the best we can hope for. A policeman charged with stealing, a teacher charged with kiddy porn, nurse suspected of taking class A medications etc would all get stood down pending investigation. If these charges are as bad for a prof sportsman in a code trying to create a certain perception only the NRL can answer. I would suggest not as their jobs don't entail direct opportunity to offend.
