Another disappointing film - The Wrestler.

Maybe it's because I'm so familiar with the industry but the movie felt really transparent to me and I could see the template Aronofsky used but with a middle aged pro wrestler as the subject.

Really didn't like the father-daughter relationship in this movie. Thought it was really lazy & it chewed into a lot of screen time that could have been spent on other parts of the industry.

I thought Beyond the Mat was way better.

Beyond the Mat was good, and a bit sad really.

The Wrestler wasn't really designed to be about wrestling. It was about the character.

One of my favourites with such a broad scope and a deep message. I think you do have to appreciate it as a work of art. The reality of space travel is quite boring in terms of the day-to-day but there are many underlying themes that make the film so fascinating.

From Wikipedia...

"Sir Arthur C. Clarke's novel of the same name was developed simultaneously with the film, though published after its release.[4] It seems to explain the ending of the film more clearly. Clarke's novel explicitly identifies the monolith as a tool created by an alien race that has been through many stages of evolution, moving from organic forms, through biomechanics, and finally has achieved a state of pure energy. These aliens travel the cosmos assisting lesser species to take evolutionary steps. The novel explains the hotel room sequence as a kind of alien zoo—fabricated from information derived from intercepted television transmissions from Earth—in which Dave Bowman is studied by the invisible alien entities. Kubrick's film leaves all this unstated."

From Kubrick...

"On the deepest psychological level the film's plot symbolizes the search for God, and it finally postulates what is little less than a scientific definition of God. The film revolves around this metaphysical conception, and the realistic hardware and the documentary feelings about everything were necessary in order to undermine your built-in resistance to the poetical concept."

Not exactly "Dumb and Dumber" (which is also one of my favourite films).

If you have to read the novel to get an idea of what's going on in the movie, then I can't see that it's a good movie.

I'm all for searching for meaning in a movie...but there are so many different things you could come up with in 2001 it seems pointless.

It's funny that you post a comment by Kubrick about what he was trying to say with 2001.
I've read interviews with him where he has said he doesn't know what he was trying to say with the movie and wanted other people to make up their own minds. But then Kubrick was a bit of a nut-job, so who knows what he was thinking.

By the way...Dumb And Dumber is one of my favourites as well.
I consider it the second funniest movie I've ever seen (after Flying High).

You seem to have pretty good taste in movies hrundi.
I like your style.

I loved The Wrestler.

A great character study with a wonderful performance from Mickey Rourke.
As someone who is not a fan of wrestling at all, it made me appreciate the sport and it's participants (or should I say actors) just a little bit.

I didn't find Randy the Ram all that interesting tbh. The only aspect I liked about the film was the parallel between the wrestlers and the strippers.

Everything else seemed played.

Wrestling Road Diaries WYD? You can't be serious!

I'm going to puke.

Beyond The Mat > True Life: I'm a Pro Wrestler > Wrestling Road Diaries.

Because it was.

But it was still eye opening.

Which is more than you can say about Wrestling Road Diaries.

Big Lebowski = top 5 films ever made.

Never, ever gets old. And this is coming from a guy who attended 'Lebowski Fest' in Sydney last month.

Mad jelly, I had to work, else I'd be there in a Liam obrien costume (ref for the true fans heh).

Equilibrium.

One of only two movies I have been watching on DVD or other sources and not bothered finishing.

I had to watch The English Patient because my oldies owned a video store at the time. I went to sleep 3 times in it and can't recall anything about it other than it put me to sleep 3 times.

Top of my list is Donnie Darko... can't understand why it got cult status. Its mostly just pretentious nonsense being cryptic for the sake of it. You shouldn't have to watch a movie and resort to Wikipedia to find out what the hell is going.

Back in the day we used to have a bad movie night, someone would be required to bring in the worst movie..usually resulted in a group of us cracking up at the movie.

Chinese Hercules, that one was one of the funniest bad movies ever. It would be an alright movie, except for the fact the dubbing sucked.

The most annoying thing someone can ever call a movie is 'pretentious'. It's a movie for god's sake, a small film with deep themes hardly makes it 'pretentious'. I've seen some reviews that say any film that tries to discuss existentialism, meaning or any type of drama is 'pretentious'.
