If he is sacked, please replace him with a coach who has actually won a grand final. Someone who has achieved this obviously knows what it takes. I don't want us wasting our time with someone with "potential". Has to be a coach who has actually won a GF.

madge maguire?

Well he definetly doesn't need a loud speaker to get his point across!

It's also obvious Madge has lost the Souths dressing room. Seeing him at half time last week trying to talk to Inglis/Reynolds, he had to virtually pull at their jerseys to get their attention. And he wasn't screaming, you could tell he was trying to talk calmly to them. That's my take on it.

Our club is great in picking rookie coaches so I will get in early and predict saints will make a play for Cam Smith as our next rookie coach but this time he will knock it back, then we sign another Mary Price?

Saints are a proud club with a long an illustrious history. Fans expect more from those who wear the red v probably more than any other club. I have said previously whilst the merger was a necessary evil, I am not sure it has benefited the club in the long term. We have learned to accept mediocrity from our once proud club.

The Bennett fix was savage and we lost good players due to it. He did do what he was asked to do by the board though and won a premiership, albeit we should have won a couple. The fallout from that fix though has left us in tatters. Reliance on fringe players due to the salary cap restrictions and pay over for these fringe players. We have had a few years now to recover from that but we do not seem to be building.

Players like Dugan, packer, Ah Mau, Cooper, De Belin (he did have a bad one last week but his form has been pretty good), are the players to lead this club. I still have mixed feelings on Widdop but believe the talent is there in him. We have filled the team with fringe dwellers other than these. Creagh should have retired and freed up money over a year ago. Nightingale, as much as I love him, needs to consider this his last year. WHilst he brings guts and destination to the side and is still great on the wing, he is fading.

So having said that what do we have. A procession of inadequate coaches who have been given jobs from the old boys school. This once worked well for the dragons back in the 60's, and 70's. That idea does not work in this modern game. We need a clearance of all old boys from the coaching and support staff and bring in a team of professionals. I would even go so far as to suggest something along the American football standard where these coaches come through the ranks from lower divisions for years before having a crack at big league teams.

If we are to see any glory in the red v we need a massive clear out now. Do it before the June 30 deadline. Cut players, remove the coaching staff and rebuild. Do not wait till the end of the season as we effectively write off next year as well. We are reasonably positioned only due to other failures with other clubs. A fresh broom through now would give us half a season to experiment, not with Dugan at centre (what a mistake that is), Strip Widdop of the captaincy and give it to Dugan who shows so much passion it's a crime to see the anguish on his face each week. That may encourage our players, including the fringe dwellers to pick up there game.

The trouble is though we have a weak management regime who will not jeapodise their positions to be innovative. If you stand in the same spot you will find yourself at the back of the pack. That is what we have done in the past few years. We have two playmakers in Widdop and Marshall who can win games. They are not being coached properly to move forward and let run the show how they feel. The path of least resistance seems to be sideways. Pull them aside and tell them that's $5000 every time they do it in a game. That should smarten them up a bit. Both would have been more than $50000 down on last weeks game.

Spend the money and buy a coaching staff that has runs on the board. Anything is better than the tripe we are being served up each week with excuses running rampant after each match. It saddens me deeply watching our once proud club run around like a mediocre side each week. It is the culture that now seems to be imbedded in the side though since the merger. This is not the Dragons I have watched and loved for more than 45 years. This is not the side that has any chance of competing in this lopsided competition.

Changes now not later.

I see coaching as a complete different role, like any professional job in the work force you must have had experience in that position, I think is absolute stupidity of our CEO and board to think that because you have played the game at the highest level that automatically makes you a candidate.
After the sacking of Price a Coach available with experience was Brian Smith, I also think having success in ESL is important, I don't want to see another St George assistant or Waterboy given the job..it is like handing the keys to a Ferrari to an L plater.
I also believe if any ex Saints player wishes to become a Coach(St George) he must complete a University degree in Teaching!

I mentioned Brian Smith a month or so ago, but in all honesty, we probably needed him after Price. Now I think the timing is all wrong. I honestly think with the right offer, we are a chance of signing someone like Maguire or even Hasler. Last time these two were on the market, we were busy di$&ing around with Price, however this time, obviously unintentionaly, we may get the timing right.
Whether it's hasler or Maguire, besides the obvious goal of winning the comp, the next important thing is to ensure we are competing to win a comp at least every 7-10 years. A long term strategic plan needs to be put into place. We have learnt some lessons from the Bennett era, we will be forever thankful to him for delivering what we all really wanted. But we also need someone with a long term vision for success.
We all just need to watch carefully how the dogs and rabbits fare over the next month, I have a feeling one of their coaches won't be there next season.

Hearing this morning on 2UE rumour mill, Toovey tipped to Warriors? Also Tigers and Cleary linking up, the worst outcome is status quo here and anther season lost, I'm not sure if this Bruce Gorden spanner is holding the Club move on anything, we seem stuck in neutral right now? What if the recent CH9 decision to part ways with WIN on regional TV and instead go with Southern Cross media? There's more going on off the field than on it right now !!

I don't think there's any chance of the club sacking Mary atm. They seem to be more than happy just to tread water for some reason. The Gordon thing may possibly turn out to be pie in the sky unfortunately with his main focus being on bigger more important things at the moment instead of buying into a rabble of a club.Doust & the board will most likely sit on their hands with all the toing & froing going on re coaches & players with the most likely scenario being Mary seeing out his contract, getting an extension or the club appointing another L plate coach after all the others are off the market.

That's the thing. So many calls for sacking Mary to replace him with another unsuccessful coach.
Makes zero sense.

On Girdon, he is 80 years old, so you'd think he is investing because he is a fan. If he thinks there's money to be made, then he is doing for the wrong reasons. All he needs to do is pick up the phone and call Politis or Crowe, I'm sure they aren't getting any financial return on their investment. The only return they are getting is pleasure knowing their team is competive.

Below is a 3 year old article. I was trying to figure out annually how much it cost to run our team. If we receive 5-6 million for the top 25 players, I'm guessing we still need another 5-6 million to run the team annually. I'd hazard a gues that Mr Gordon and St.George leagues would need to inject around 2 million ech into the JV annually. The rest would have to come from membership/gate receipts and merchandise.

The thing that gets me is that a few weeks ago Mary said that he would be happy if once we got into the middle of the season we had a 50% win rate given our draw. But really that is saying to the team you can lose half your games and it is ok.

I think in attack we are always thinking about the next play that is going to take place. And that is the one that everyone is waiting for. But they never get set up for it because it is so mediocre that we don't get in good position to do ANYTHING.

Also we should way too much respect for opposition teams. You can see that as a fan. And they know we can't score points or put them in two minds. It is embarrassing.

Further on Mary, his win/loss record at the dragons is 47% (Price was 36%). This is his second full year in charge but he was around in the Price years so it is not like he didn't understand how the team played before hand. So really through almost two years he has a negative win/loss record.

Do we really think anything is going to improve in the second half of the year?

What I would like to understand is that we know Doust has been there through everything. What about the other senior personnel either at the Dragons or at board level? They are the ones who consistently hire coaches who don't work out. When do they finally fall on their sword? Surely it is time.

Also yes Dugan going back to Centre. FFS can't we simply leave the bloke in the position he plays his best football. And gives us the best chance of starting a set off well.

Moving him from fullback to centre weakens two positions. Why can't people see that.

Clearly, Duges is a great FB, the best ball returner and an average centre at best.

The sad thing is this is clear in all of our minds but the coaching staff see something different? I think they want to believe he will be good there. But it goes on performance.

Which is another thing that frustrates me. The team might be trying hard but realistically, their performances are not up to scratch. And if that is the case then you should be moved on or at least dropped to show that is what happens to poor form. There are no consequences for our guys if they perform badly.

The reality is that we have McGregor as our coach with no idea how to actually coach and a squad that is pretty average compared to a lot of the better sides.
Put those two together and you aren't going to be very successful which is how its playing out!
