With all due respect, that is not a fair comment...Widdop is not solely responsible for why we haven't won a premiership ...Without Widdop we would have been worse off over the last few years...
Players awards do count when Widdop is constantly chosen by his peers who play the game and against him. They would know more than most of us on this forum.
Have a good evening Dennis.
I know this topic always creates a controversy but I am sticking to my guns.
Widdop is
not solely responsible - how can he be? I honestly don't know why you think that that is my position. However he is
definitely part of the problem.
Great link man at Melbourne who has unsuccessfully tried to become the chief playmaker at St. George.
He just isn't that kind of player.
I am not casting aspersions over his football ability and I am not diluting his standing in the game.
I am just saying that he is a terrible captain. He is
not an elite playmaker (like Cronk for example) and he has had numerous halves partners that were unable to gel as a combination with him.
He is not even an elite goalkicker at 75%.
The proof of the pudding is in our results. Bottom line, no premierships in 5 years.
You can rationalize it but its impossible to dispute.
If I can draw a comparison which may make my position a little more understandable.
Look at Maloney vs. Widdop…
Different kind of players yet they both play the same position.
Maloney has won two premierships with 2 different clubs as the chief playmaker.
Deadly goal kicker at 81%.
Not as flashy as Widdop but tough as teak and has real mongrel and a ruthless streak that Widdop lacks.
So, in spite of the indignance that my opinion of Widdop provokes, I KNOW that if we had someone like Maloney playing behind our pack of forwards, we would have done much better over the last 5 years.
You watch Penrith this year with Cleary at coach and Maloney as captain pulling the strings on the field.
They are a dark horse to be reckoned with.
