No news is great news ! I won't be so shitty if they do resign him , as long as it is at seasons end and based on how we go this season and no fu--en excuses accepted.Gets us to a GF then that's alright with me but nothing less and a 2 year contract at best.

I'd rather SGI let Mary go ASAP! In that way we might be able to win the competition this season.

Life wouldn't so bad if Mary was to depart.

Let's face it, we would still have a dozen or so 'Assistant Coaches' to direct the troops around the park.
Heaven forbid, Some of past greats ( Boys Club ).... may have to actually have to start working for a living.

OKB, in my mind the assistant coaches ( part of the 3 Amigos ) deserve as much vitriol as the head coach. If they were really true to themselves and were as perplexed as most of us by some of the coaches decision making, they should resign on principle, but no they are just riding the gravy train. Give me assistant coaches that have done time with other clubs.

Player awards don't equate to premierships.
Widdop is a glaring example.

With all due respect, that is not a fair comment...Widdop is not solely responsible for why we haven't won a premiership ...Without Widdop we would have been worse off over the last few years...

Players awards do count when Widdop is constantly chosen by his peers who play the game and against him. They would know more than most of us on this forum.

Have a good evening Dennis.

I know this topic always creates a controversy but I am sticking to my guns.
Widdop is not solely responsible - how can he be? I honestly don't know why you think that that is my position. However he is definitely part of the problem.
Great link man at Melbourne who has unsuccessfully tried to become the chief playmaker at St. George.
He just isn't that kind of player.
I am not casting aspersions over his football ability and I am not diluting his standing in the game.
I am just saying that he is a terrible captain. He is not an elite playmaker (like Cronk for example) and he has had numerous halves partners that were unable to gel as a combination with him.
He is not even an elite goalkicker at 75%.
The proof of the pudding is in our results. Bottom line, no premierships in 5 years.
You can rationalize it but its impossible to dispute.
If I can draw a comparison which may make my position a little more understandable.
Look at Maloney vs. Widdop…
Different kind of players yet they both play the same position.
Maloney has won two premierships with 2 different clubs as the chief playmaker.
Deadly goal kicker at 81%.
Not as flashy as Widdop but tough as teak and has real mongrel and a ruthless streak that Widdop lacks.
So, in spite of the indignance that my opinion of Widdop provokes, I KNOW that if we had someone like Maloney playing behind our pack of forwards, we would have done much better over the last 5 years.
You watch Penrith this year with Cleary at coach and Maloney as captain pulling the strings on the field.
They are a dark horse to be reckoned with.

Let's agree to disagree. You are entitled to your opinion...Funny how you leave McGregor out of the equation when it suits your argument..( He is the main reason why we have achieved little ).and quote Maloney being coached by Cleary...Maloney has been coached by decent coaches....and didn't Widdop win a premiership @ Melbourne...?? I guess that doesn't count. Have a great day.

Very hard to make that call however, I am very sure that without Mary our success on field would have been far greater than it has been with him in charge.

Unless I've missed it, we haven't named our captain yet. Some chance it could be Maloney, but most Panthers people want it to be Isaah Yeo. Jimmy doesn't need to be captain to pull strings anyway.
I thought he was captain last year that's why I assumed that he would continue.
In any case, it is a true statement that he doesn't need to be captain to pull the strings.

I am one of McGregor's biggest critics and have no doubt that his coaching has compromised Widdop's effectiveness so it has nothing to do with it "suiting" me.
The premiership Widdop won under Bellamy at Melbourne just proves my point.
A top line coach identified Widdop as a link man - a foil for his chief playmaker who was Cronk..
Widdop did that job beautifully and was an important cog in a well oiled Melbourne machine.
End result - premiership glory.
McGregor has been happy to promote Widdop as our chief playmaker and made him captain to boot.
In both instances it hasn't worked.
So of course McGregor has to accept responsibility for the way he has structured the Team however Widdop left Melbourne because he wanted something more than what Bellamy was prepared to offer him.
A more astute coach at St. George may have used Widdop differently to how McGregor has but that may not have satisfied Widdop.
That's part of our problem. McGregor is popular with the player group (or so we're told) and he has always had his favourites.
That kind of coaching philosophy doesn't win premierships.
So let's agree to disagree but I feel we actually agree on quite a lot.
The main difference is that you rate Widdop a lot higher than I do - awards and all..

Brownie was just underdone as a coach.
In truth he had (and has) some serious football smarts compared to McGregor.
What's a pass mark for Brownie this year with that Knights roster?
Surely if they don't play finals he is on thin ice. I think everyone accepts the re-build is complete and now its time for results. Top 8 or he's failed as a coach in 2019.

I still dont think they are strong enough in depth and had enough time together in playing to make the 8.
Next year for sure. If injuries strike, like any team you are pushing a barrow up hill...but their hill is steeper. Their backs are not that strong outside their starting 1-7...then again neither are ours
