St George Illawarra veteran Matt Cooper hopes sacked Canberra star Josh Dugan isn't lost to the NRL, saying the Dragons would happily take the troubled fullback.
The Raiders board terminated Dugan's contract on Thursday following a number of breaches of team policy - which were believed to be sparked by a breakdown in his relationship with coach David Furner.
The former NSW Origin representative has been linked with a number of clubs including the Dragons, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Penrith.
There is still no word on whether the NRL will allow him to sign with a rival club, with the 22-year-old also believed to be eyeing a move to French rugby union.
Speaking before he had become aware of Dugan's sacking earlier on Thursday, Cooper hoped Dugan could sort out his differences with the Raiders, but added that he would be welcomed at the Dragons should he become available.
"He's a quality player, he's shown in the past how good he is," Cooper said.
"We need players like that back in the game, it's a shame for him to be out of the game.
"If he ends up coming to the Dragons then so be it - we'd have him that's for sure."
Despite the interest in Dugan, Cooper said the Dragons were more than happy with their new No.1 Gerard Beale, who impressed against Melbourne last weekend in his first game for the club.
The Dragons were one of a number of clubs that pursued Dugan before he re-signed with the Raiders in February 2012.
