Don't know why your being so defensive. Simply saying that a guy who at times has been known to be mentally fragile and go missing has a big responsibility when the big stuff comes around playing for a team that hasn't experienced the "big games" for a while.
He was one of the elite halves in the competition while Wayne Bennett was his coach. Then Steve Price takes over, his side loses a lot of the better players and a shadow of the side it was the previous few years, and suddenly all that is his fault?
The way I see it, he has played good football when playing under decent coaches in decent teams. His football under those circumstances has ranged from good to great. Those coaches being Bennett and now Cleary.
Put any half in a terribly coached team (Steve Price), with a terrible halves partner (Nathan Fien who was a decent hooker), a weak forward pack (Lost all the enforcers and turned into the softest pack in the competition), average at best hooker, average at best fullback and nowhere near first grade standard centres. What halves are still going to look good in that team? I would back Thurston, Cronk and DCE to struggle in the same circumstances aswell.
He has won a grand final and lit up the competition for 3 years while being coached by Wayne Bennett. He went missing for 2 years while the Dragons were suffering under Price, and the club lost many of the star players that were big parts of their success. He's now under Ivan Cleary and looks more like the player he was under Wayne Bennett.
I'm not sure he is capable of his form under Wayne Bennett again. But he's clearly still a quality playmaker when he is part of a decently coached team with quality players around him. His kicking game looks as good as ever and he's even running the ball when he sees an opportunity and he's defending better then he ever has before.
