back foot ?

fmd, you must be a fossil

 you said from day dot... I just am aware of that rule

Great series win, team is really showing character, skill, and once we find a second opener and Milne Henry develop, plus a few fringe/young bats kick on, we'll be looking deep too

As long as injuries stay away, we can compete with pretty much anyone

We've just gone above Sri Lanka and India in the test rankings, rightly so - and are not far from Pakistan and England

I would back us to beat England later this year, but we'd have to play consistently at this standard

Our year will be very interesting. England and Australia with the two playing an Ashes series in between. Will be a good gauge of where we're at.

Interestingly, a couple of years ago I was exalting Williamson over Smith, and several Aussie fans were rubbishing my claims. In retrospect, they weren't paying Williamson proper regard and I wasn't paying Smith his. Someone more sensible came on and pointed out that they were both extraordinary talents and we should leave it at that.

Yeah, that sounds right - my feeling was they were overrating Smith and underrating Williamson, they probably thought we were doing the opposite...

That said, Smith has been batting 4/5, and Williamson 3 with Rutherford opening - significant disadvantage for him

Agreed. Any comparison would be like splitting hairs depending on what side you're arguing.

Longevity could be the difference maker, but if they both carry on their current path then nothing will separate them but the smallest of debatable statistics.

Regardless, there's a lot of good young batsmen under 30 starting to develop nicely at test level. Every nation seems to have one as well

Smith, Williamson, Kohli, De Kock, Mathews, Root etc

1st ODI of seven (!) now underway.

New Zealand right on top Sri Lanka 82/4 (23.0 ov), Milne has two so far and is getting good pace

149/4

Sri Lankans are hardly capitalising on the power play. That being said, I'm not overly excited about the strategy of using Milne in the power play.

Good wicket. Probably at the right time. Thirimanne was great to have around during the power play.
