RIP Steve, gave everything to this country he loved so much. Will be sadly missed.

Apparently this is only the 3rd recorded death by stingray in Australian history, the news report said that if it had got him in the arm or leg he would be on TV right now laughing and joking about it, it got him in the worst possible place over the heart. seems cruel and unfair.

See ya mate.

Absolutely freak way to die. To think the number of times he has stuck his head in a crocs mouth, just to be taken by a sting ray.

His life story will make a wicked movie.

Oh man... Karma's a bitch! To think of all the stupid and dangerous things I have seen this lunatic do and to get stabbed in the heart by a stingray???? Oh well... RIP Crikey. You were one truely mad bastard! At least now when I have to explain to my kids not to do what you did, I at least now have a reason!

It's crazy. I feel so much the same. It's still unbeleivable to me. Such a great guy going out so easily with nothing nobody could do. After all the crocs and snakes etc. he has handled... he becomes only the 3rd recorded death to a stingray.

Still. I can't imagine how much more stunned his wife would be over this news. Given he and her done this for a living and i'm sure that to them both a stingray would seemingly be like an office job compared to a Croc. I'd hate to be whoever broke this news to her. And i'd hate to have to break it to her kids. That is unless they heard it on the radio first... which would just be sickening.

I had a terrible thought after i heard that his wife terri hadnt be contacted yet and didnt yet know.

What if she had taken a small radio along with her on her treck and found out that way, alone.

What can I say. I found out earlier today via this thread and I must admit at first I thought it was a gee up.

Tragic news for Australia and my condolences to his family. Will be sorely missed.

I found out about this when I left the local Jupiters Hotel and Casino at about a quarter to three this afternoon after being there for a recruitment day and I was in shock. I also received a phone call from my dad at about four o'clock telling me about the news (I already knew). In my humble opinion, this is a national tragedy. Steve Irwin's shoes are going to be extremely difficult to fill.

On a serious matter, my thoughts and prayers are with Terri, Bindi and Bob, the family and friends of the Irwin Family and everyone at Australia Zoo.

Rest in Peace Steve

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin has died.

The wildlife presenter was filming a documentary off the coast of Australia today (04.08.06) when a stingray attacked him, using its poisonous barb to pierce his chest.

According to reports, paramedics flew out to the Great Barrier Reef - the scene of the tragedy - to treat him but it was too late.

Steve has left behind a wife, 42-year-old Terri, and two children - eight-year-old daughter Bindi and his son Bob, two.

Fans have flooded internet message boards devoted to the 44-year-old star to pay their tributes.

On the Animal Planet site, Whitney Colbert wrote: "His compassion for the living things around him was and is truly remarkable. We've lost a great man."

Another forum member, Caligirlwithcroctattoos, posted: "At least he died doing what he loved, teaching us about the animal world. He will be missed."

Steve - who was renowned for his daredevil antics on his 'Crocodile Hunter' TV series - hit the headlines in 2004 after he was caught holding baby Bob, who was just one month old at the time, while he fed crocodiles.

Later that year, he was cleared of charges claiming he got too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales while filming a documentary in Antarctica.

Holy F*ck. What a pathetic piece of journalism. Them Poms sure know how to nail the news. A 4th grader could write better.

R.I.P - Steve Irwin

One thing, he died the way he wanted to.

he was qouted as saying, that if his death was "off the job" and not caught on film he'd be "Spewing"!

See ya in valhalla Mate.

Rest in peace Steve.
I'm quite stunned at how much his death has affected me. I wasn't a huge fan of his TV shows, but I had the utmost respect for his passion and his contribution to wildlife conservation in Australia. This is a tragedy for Queensland, and Australia, and my thoughts are with his family. Steve, you will be greatly missed but also greatly remembered.

not really sad as he died loving what he was doing or so they say  . I bet if these people could ever be interviewed just before they die and be told that they will die it would be interesting to hear just how much they love doing these things then.

it's like the man who fell off a 100 story building - as he passed each floor people heard him say so far so good - until he came to that sudden stop at the bottom that is
