Napoleon, have you read up on all the infighting? (I'm assuming you support France?) Apparently it's been going on for two years.

How Domenech retained his jon after EURO 2008 is beyond me.

Blanc has a difficult job ahead of him but he is inheriting a pretty talented side, on paper at least.

Whats going on at this world cup will help Blanc.

Get rid of every player over 30, start again with Benzema, Ben Arfa, Gourcuff etc. as the new faces of France football. Retire, Henry, Gallas, Ribery etc. as they have had there day. The recent goings on is a perfect excuse to do it.

As for the rest of the thread, I'm English so its my job to dislike all the other Euro teams, they all cheat and are trying to ruin the great game of football...

Oh and even if i thought Spain would go further than my team i would never support another country over my own, thats a bit prawn sandwich brigade for me.

Probably the only time we'll see eye-to-eye Wireman, so make a note of the date. As much as I want the Argies to win, I'm not going to support them more than Australia.

I do see his point - it was a bit hard to stomach seeing blokes with whiter skin than me, that have one grandparent from Italy, who couldn't speak a word of Italian celebrating in Norton St when Italy beat the country they've lived in their entire life.

So what? Who has any right to have a go at me for who I support?

My parents were both born in Portugal so I am of Portuguese decent but born in Australia. I speak basic Portuguese. Not fluent but enough to get by.

I started watching soccer in 98 when the world cup was on at age 11. I loved it and fell in love with the sport. The next major international tournament was two years later at Euro 2000. I watched all of Portugals games with my grandfather and fell in love with the team and since then have supported them through all the ups and downs. Australia in that time was a speck on the Australian sporting landscape. Playing their 'competitive games' against the likes of Tonga and Solomon Islands. It wasnt until the last world cup that they finally proved they could play and by then I loved the Portuguese national team and had so for 6 years.

Dont get me wrong. I support Australia as well and own a socceroos scarf and jersey. But i have a greater passion for the Portuguese team and always will even if they played Australia.

You know, the World Cup has been around for a long time without Australia in it, so most people support or follow the country of their heritage.

Exactly. Its like if you lived in Brisbane your whole life and supported the Bulldogs for 20 years then the Broncos came into the competition. Does that mean you HAVE to now support the Broncos. Of course not.

So you have TWO parents from Portugal and you speak the language? So already you've got 2 points over the 'Italians' I was referring to.

Still, you couldn't be arsed supporting Australia because they were playing against some tinpot island countries? What a cop out. If you were born here and lived here your entire life, the only reason you should have for not supporting Australia first is if you're a glory hunter.

Didn't like Australia because they were sh*t  What a joke. You're as bad as the Parramatta fans that completely ignore the Eels until they make a run to the finals and start getting 20000 to their games for about three weeks.

That's not even close to an accurate comparison. It's not like the Australian football team just suddenly appeared out of nowhere in 2005. It's always been there.

The ironic thing about saying 'It wasnt until the last world cup that they finally proved they could play' is that the side that lost to Iran in the 1998 qualifiers and the one that missed out the previous WC to Argentina would have given the 2006 side a damn good game......

But hey, it all started in 2006 :sarcasm:

Exactly. It's a joke..."Oh I would've gone for Australia but they were rubbish" is the message I get from all these "xxxx is my heritage" clowns.

Born in Australia, lived in Australia your entire life...support Italy/Portugal/whoever. Get f**ked.

Being Australians, growing up with never having ur team in the world cup, we all have a 2nd team that we support and have adopted as a team we are passionate about, this doesn't stop when Australia make it.

But I can't understand not supporting the Socceroos. They are our country, representatives of us. I would prefer to see the Socceroos make the 2nd round over my 2nd team win the world cup. Sure we had a lot of heartbreak through the years, i remember watching intently through the massive highs and lows of the 93, 97 and 2001 campaigns, absolutely dejected when it was over, but I wouldn't change it at all, It's only made us stronger and to be a supporter through all that and to see where we are now, that's a greater satisfaction than seeing my 2nd team win a world cup.

as for the original post, very lame. Why the need to start a thread about rubbing it in?

Well the world cup is the biggest f**king sporting event in the world. Australia couldnt make it and I fell in love with another team. f**king sue me dickheads.

And dont go talking about "Oh I would've gone for Australia but they were rubbish". I could name 20 people I know off the top of my head that wouldnt even have been able to name 1 socceroos player before the last world cup but now go around like they are the socceroos biggest fans. Bandwagon supporters.

And its not like Portugal have been a huge success anyways. Before 2002 they had only qualified for two world cups. They're one of the worlds biggest underachievers in football and were absolutely abysmal in the 2002 world cup. Im not a bandwagon supporter I just started supporting a team and stuck with them. I know a guy who is born in Australia with Australian parents and he supports England. So what. Each to their own.

Italy will always be ahead of Australia for me. Oh and Bumble, may parents were both born in Italy and i know a bit of Italian...like how to say "go and get f**ked"
So where does that put me in your soccer fan ratings?

Yes, but it's not like they were battling it out in the San Marino/Luxembourg level of European teams in between then.

That bleak, footballing wilderness between 1982 and 2006 also contained a semi-final berth in EURO 88' and WC 90' (which you also hosted) a WC finals berth in 1994 and a European final in 2000. Hardly doing it tough.

My point is that most, if not all of the people in this country that support the country of their lineage rather than the country of their birth is because Australia have largely been rubbish for almost the entirety of football. You're what, 25? I assume if Australia had been making WC quarters, semis and what not from 1986 onwards the team you hold most dear would be different.

Be honest...Australia being sh*t played a part in your pro-Italy stance, right?
